I like better beer than I brew.

I brewed my first beer last month. It was a ****ty pale ale. I used a MR.BEER set. I don't know if the slight crisp green apple taste came bc of impurities in my brewing process or because I "lagered" it in my fridge while bottle conditioning.

I am about to start a stout using my Mr.Beer kit. Maybe someday I'll graduate to a "real" brewing set. Until then...

Green apple taste could also be the taste of "young beer". Let it ferment for a bit longer next time.

we wanted to brew SAHTI today but we werent able to steal juniper twigs from our neighbors.i was able to get a big bag with supposedly juniper twigs on tueasday(night/wednesday morning) but found out after further research that it was a thuja tree,which contains thujon and other poisonous crap.it nearly looks exactly like juniper so i was happy i did some extra research.wouldjt ahve been funny to get really sick after drinking supposedly nice Sahti.so we just brewed another badge of pilsener and varied the hopping to the first brew attempt.but we really want to brew Sahti and we will psush forwardd to get some nice juniper twigs

Welcome to the club. I'd have to say that the vast majority of my friends, if they opened a good beer, would take one drink and not want any more of it, leaving more for me LOL!!

I've emailed the Rock Hoppers club out of Castle Rock CO for the Chicken Nuts Imperial Stout recipe, will pass along results later this year when we try it out....if they'll share the recipe, that is!!

I haven't checked this thread in a while but it's aweome that more poker players are getting into good beer. Hi Austin! I love homebrewing and work part time at a good craft beer bottle shop in Minneapolis, so this thread makes me happy!

Hey Pat! So what else you up to besides working at store? Were you still playing when BF hit? Wish my job was at a beer store . I'm gonna have to check out that episode later sounds fun. Also stopping by beer store on way home today, throw some recommendations this way and I'll try to pick up something I haven't tried before/I can find.

Ok decided to buy Rochefort 6 and 10 and Sam Smith's Nut Brown Ale yesterday.

Rochefort 10 was the real standout. Complex, full of flavor, not too much carbonation at all, a little sweet, and the high alcohol is masked very well.

Rochefort 6 is very good too. More fizzy tho but goes down smooth and just good all around. I liek it because unlike Rochefort 10, I can drink a few without becoming hammered.

Nut Brown Ale was surprising because it is extremely smooth. So much so that it tasted watery. Didn't have much flavor but then again I have been drinking different Belgian beers all week so maybe I got used to the more complex Belgian beers. If I hadn't been drinking them I might have appreciated this one more. The Nut Brown Ale would be a terrific beer if youre gonna spend a few hours drinking beer because it's so smooth.

Does anyone know where to get those styrofoam 6-pack shipping containers? I traded with someone in Michigan and they sent me some beer in one and I dont ever want to go back to bubble wrap.

Technically you can buy them at some UPS stores or other shipping stores, but they're expensive for what they are (20-30 bucks a pop). I've had good luck just going to bottle shops and asking if they have any kicking around. Often times they don't, but other times I've walked away with a couple free of charge.

Drinking Bell's Expedition Stout right now, and wow it is fantastic. Probably my favorite Russian Imperial Stout. Soooooo tasty.

Tried Rogue Dead Guy Ale today and Three Philosophers.

Weird when I read reviews on Beer Advocate or Rate Beer because the reviews are so descriptive, mentioning bananas, raisins, etc. Meanwhile I can never pick up any of these notes. I guess I'm a noobie. To me things taste either a little sweet, or complex, or watery, or smooth, or bitter, etc.

Anyways, Dead Guy Ale for me was nothing to write home about. It basically just tastes like a ho hum beer. Not bad but not exciting. Kinda bland.

Three Philosophers however was really really good. Definitely on the sweet, complex side that I'd expect from a quad but not as sweet as say a La Trappe Quad, from what I remember (been like 10 years since I had the La Trappe). This would be a great cold weather beer.

Thanks. The bar I went to today had it but it was $18, since it's a big bottle. So I skipped. But I'll pick it up at a store.

Brewing another batch of Hefe in the morning, this time with the ferulic rest at 110 for 15, then stepping to 135 for 15, then to 148-152.....

Well I haven't been up to much too exciting, just playing poker part time and working at the store a lot. Homebrewing has been my sister and I's hobby for the last two years. Long term I am looking at a job in the beer industry. I was playing poker part time when BF hit, but just part time on UB, so I a lost a little which sucked but oh well.

How about you? What are you doing for work? Do you have a teaching job? Still playing poker online or otherwise at all?

I'm not sure what beer styles you like the most, but as for general recommendations based on FL distribution I would say Lagunitas Little Sumthin' Wild, Hoppin Frog BORIS Imperial Stout, or anything from Cigar City or Funky Buddha Lounge (a little brewpub a few hours north of Miami).

I switched majors (again) to video game design and I'm about a year out. Right now I'm working for a decent sized home building company doing advertising/marketing work, mostly logo design, website upkeep, and a whole bunch of photo color correction.

I was mostly done playing poker when it hit, I had a few dollars spread out on cake,ftp,ps so I was able to get everything but FTP back which isn't THAT big of a deal.

I like almost all styles minus sours. I've tried everything CC distributes now I think and there isn't any Funky Buddha around here. I tried their PBJ brown last weekend which was pretty crazy. My favorite styles atm are RIS's, IPA's, and Pale Ale's. The Bell's Expedition Stout last night was amazing and I've got the Yeti Imperial Stout in the fridge for after golf today.

Also got a Pale Ale, Afpelwein, and Wheat Pils fermenting right now.

It was an interesting brew day today. We overshot our ferulic rest temp, couldn't get below 115 to save our lives despite several icebaths. Finally had to settle for 112 degree rest. Air temp outside (sunny day) was probably 83-85. Then we couldn't get our second step temp warm enough, had to go with 130. We pulled the recommended liquid off for boil 4 times minimum and still couldn't get there. We boiled enough where I think we might end up with too dark a color profile (the mash water after the 4th boil was darker than I've seen any other hefe we've done). Then we couldn't get to 152. I couldn't imagine today (93 degree high temp) would have been a day we would have had trouble getting warm enough lol. We ended up having to mash for an extra 40 minutes, still don't think we got all the sugars out. To top it off, even with our copper coil with water running through it we only got the wort down to 78 after boil. We ended up pitching at 76 and putting the fermenters in an icebath until we got down where we wanted. It will be interesting to see how this one turns out. I'm sure it will still be drinkable but I wouldn't guess it would be competition worthy lol.

I love Sorachi Ace.

I was going to make a Sorachi Ace Saison last batch, unfortunately they did not have any at the local shop. Instead I got some Nelson Sauvin. Which ended up working out awesome. Gives an interesting grape/white wine taste. Transfering the Saison to secondary tomorrow. Looking forward to kegging it in a bit.

The malt bill was simple 8lbs Pilsner and 3 lbs Rye Malt and 0.5 of sugar. I used WLP Farmhouse Ale -> Dupont's Yeast Strain and a Brett Strain. So far it taste's great. This one is at 5.5 abv right now.

Currently doing a cereal mash for a larger more rustic saison with buckwheat and spelt. Will let it mash overnight and then boil tomorrow. And add a slurry from the Rye Saison. This one will be a bit larger 1.073 OG probably a little over 8 abv at the end.

Cool man, that's a really exciting major to switch to. Playing any sc2? I'm a big fan and play a lot but am just a diamond league noob. Sounds like things are going great for you, thats awesome!

As far as beer goes, just out of curiousity have you had any of the barrel aged Cigar City Hunnapu's yet? I've just had the original, but I heard the apple brandy barrel one was amazing and that they are rolling out with some that is rum barrel aged later this year. Super jealous that you got to try some Funky Buddha lounge beer. I was thinking about trying to brew a Maple Bacon Coffee Porter clone sometime in the near future.

I suppose as far as suggestions based on your likes, I would go with Espresso Yeti (that, Alesmith Speedway stout from California and all the Yetis are amazing), the new Lagunitas Luck 13 Alt, Oscar Blues Ten Fidy, or Ballast Point Sculpin.

I'm actually big on sours right now, so I'm brewing a few gallons of something similar to Ithaca Brute with a bunch of cultured bottle dregs. Planning on brewing an IPA similar to Odell IPA soon and maybe more sours or a Funky Buddha Lounge Clone.

Drinking a Stone Smoked Porter right now and gonna have a Weinstephaner Hefe later. Also I gotta agree that Soriachi Ace is pretty awesome. I had it for the first time about a week ago.

LacticAcid, ur Saison idea sounds super tasty, I'm big on saisons and brewed one with 3711 a few months ago and aged it on mangoes and it turned out amazing . The wild yeast addition sounds like an great plan (Fantome and Saison - Brett ftw!).

I haven't had any of the barrel aged Hunnapu's or the original for that matter. I did see that they were releasing it on 3 different barrels later this year though so that's exciting. I might have to drive down and try to grab some.
I'm looking to buy and convert 3 kegs soon to use for my HLT/MLT/Kettle so hopefully that is a success. I'd also like to build a brew stand in the near future but I don't have much experience in building stuff though...

For my next brew day I think I am going to do a SMaSH day. I'm going to use Golden Promise malt and make (5) 1 gallon batches. 4 batches will be single hopped with Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, and Columbus. The final batch will be a combination of all these hops together.

Couple of questions. The AA's of the hops vary from 5.0 to 14.4, so to really taste the difference in them should I alter the amount used to get similar IBU levels, or just use the same amount of each and disregard IBU levels?

Second question is I plan on fermenting these in the leftover apple juice jugs from my afpelwien. I plan on pouring the batch in it, capping it, and feeding a tube through a small hole I make in cap. Assuming it's a super snug fit I should be fine right?

Also, pitch 1/5 the yeast I usually use right?

Had a dogfish Theobroma last night, it was ok but not great. Expected a little more out of it I guess, really could not get any of the cocoa flavors.
Also finally got a firestone Walker parabola but didn't try it yet.

anyone is boston are see more firestone products? not necessarily parabola, which i know is hard to find, but it seems that ive only started seeing it randomly around here until very recently. it may just be me, but just want to know if there have been places that have had their for a while

I'm North of Boston, but I bought the double IPA from Firestone at my local store a few months back.
