I may be attending a conference in Austin in May. Anybody have recommendations for when I escape the conference?

What kinds of things do you like? If you like to be outside, the trail around ladybird lake is nice. If you like art, laguna gloria. Or the blanton. There are so many things to do. Not sure if the bats will be there yet. Give me an idea of your tastes and i can give some more recs.

Sixth Street for music in the bars. Zilker Park is good to walk around, should be nice in May. Going to see the bats come out from under the Congress Avenue bridge (I think) around sundown is a thing, but I didn't find it that great.

go out and count the number of cowboy hats and the number of big belt buckles to see which are the most.

When I was in Modesto I thought that I would buy my dad a cowboy hat(he loved westerns), but when I went into the store I realised that they were the real thing and costed $150 upwards.

Love art museums. I like being outside. Good dive bars. Good local food. Bookstores.

As far as dive bars go, Ginnys Little Longhorn Saloon is about as divey as you get. Gotta go on Sunday for chicken **** bingo. Others you might try are Deep eddy cabaret, donns depot and mean eyed cat - all pretty close to each other.

I mentioned already but i think you would like Laguna Gloria. Its a small museum on a really nice plot of land on a lake. There are large pieces of art all around the grounds. Nice pretty shade paths. Just a good way to spend a couple of hours.

The smell of bookstores makes me happy, I can’t think of a better thing than reading.

Get some good bbq, all the locals can recommend the best places. Although it is actually hard to get bad bbq in Austin. I once stayed in some smaller town south of Austin and got some of the best brisket I’ve ever tasted.

Kreuz in Lockhart is great. Black's too. Franklins is the best of the best but be prepared to wait in a long line.

Some people on this site try to intimidate others by threatening with a ban. Since I have been extorted at gunpoint by redundant Russian soldiers this doesn’t affect me much,

enjoy the nice day schlitzarooni. the weather is coming in to get you in the next day or so. you might have to squirrel up in your house for a day or so.

im getting tired of this 80 degrees and sunny every day. good for motorcycle riding though.

If that washes out, try Birkenstocks and ManBags.

I'm really trying to stay out of this thread, but John might enjoy the Carousel Lounge over on the highway and E 51st or 52nd.

And what's that place on South Congress just south of the river? Used to be great for music. Is that still there? Continental Club? God only knows what it may have become. Used to hang there when I worked across the street at the Deaf School.

btw, 15 years ago they bulldozed the entire city, then hired the architects who design Starbucks to build it over. You can drive S. Lamar from the river to Ben White and not see a building that couldn't pass for a 1960 Holiday Inn or Howard Johnson's. Austin sucks so hard it blows.

Thanks, and yeah Lockhart was the town I spent the night in (and I went to one of the three BBQ places you mentioned) . It is great little city. It also has by the way a bootyfull County Court House (Cadwell County I think). I looked it up on google and I remember the building very distinctly - A large and elegant court house like many in other counties of Texas. Lockhart claims to be thee BBQ Capital of Texas. . As you can tell, Texans are not known for their modesty.

Kreuz's was the last real butcher shop in Texas where cows walked in the back and bbq walked out the front. It was divied up in an estate fight but is still pretty good.
