I guess I feel that it didn’t have the usual 3-4 scenes/movie that make me lose my sh*t every time I see a Tarantino film the first time. Although watching Leo lose it in his trailer was 10/10.

I don’t know. It felt meandering and kind of pointless, usually I feel like Tarantino has such obvious things he wants to say, and here it feels like you’re just watching people live their lives against the (quite great) backdrop that he so meticulously planned - almost as if the focus was on that rather than the story. The ending did NOT do it for me, although I was laughing my ass off it felt forced and packaged. I suppose it’s possible I have just missed a lot of the nuance though; will obv watch again.
agree with your post, cannot wait to watch it again but not to the point of paying a 2nd ticket.

Jurassic Park

One of our local theaters was showing it this weekend, so we took our 10-year old. He was in one of those moods where he didn't want to leave the house, but he ended up loving it. At one point, he whispered to me, "This is so tense!"

He loves "retro" stuff. He was born in 2008, but he's totally an 80's and 90's kid. He's into art and animation, so he had a great appreciation for the significance of the film beyond it just being fun. Plus he thought it was cool that Nick Fury was in it.

It's extremely impressive how well it holds up today. We all know this, of course, but man, the effects are still unmatched by most films.

This question may make no sense, but how did he become an 80s and 90s kid?

^^This.

My wife and I are in our 40's - my wife is totally about the 80's. I love retro video games. That combo, including movies and music, as well, rubbed off on my son. My daughter (will be 13 in October) isn't as big into retro as my son is, but she still appreciates it.

I've been collecting older video game consoles and am gradually making my home office into what my kid is calling the "nostalgia room." Have NES, N64, PS1, Dreamcast, Genesis, Intellivision, Colecovision, and Atari 2600-5200-7800. Just trying to figure out the shelving situation for them, so most are packed away in the closet or in a stack of boxes in the corner right now. I do have the NES, SNES, and PS Classics hooked up in the office, with a space reserved for Genesis. Xbox 360 and Wii on that same TV, too (I count those as separate from the "retro" systems).

My kid is all into that stuff. I just put a Dig Dug arcade marquee above his bedroom door - that's his favorite old school arcade game. I got Yie Ar Kung-Fu for my above my office door.

And I thought the ending was kind of lame, especially the turn with
Spoiler:
her new husband. He's been going out of his way to try and protect her the whole movie and then at the end he just says nah you have to die. made no sense at all.

The movie that probably compares the most to Ready or Not is YOU"RE NEXT. If you've never seen You're Next, see it. It's a much better version of a similar idea.
Spoiler:
Alex, the husband, was never the male protagonist of the film. Daniel, his brother, was. This was foreshadowed by the opening scene, where he protected his brother. Alex loved Grace, yes, but the most important thing about him was he saw her as a way out of the "family business". Once it became clear that she was going to leave him if they survived, he chose being the prodigal son for his family over being alone without it. Daniel, once again, made the selfless decision to save her. I believe all of this was very in character, and very well executed.

Anyway, couldn't disagree more with your overall thoughts on the movie. I thought it was a ton of fun, and very well done all around.

Not every movie can have the realism and verisimilitude of the poker showdown in Casino Royale.

But the action set pieces are all really, really good. And this time they did put some effort into tying together the story to the previous movies. I only wish the James Bond movies were as fun as Mission Impossible. Recommended.

Co-sign recommendation I loved this movie best action flick I’ve seen in years.

Edge of Tomorrow / Live Die Repeat was another Cruise action movie that flew under the radar I thought was excellent.

Tried out Spider-Man: into the spider verse recently and tbh didn’t really like it all. No offense but this is a movie for children I’m not sure why you guys sung its praises so highly. I loved the Nolan Batman movies, Iron Man, Deadpool, Kickass, and even the first two Tobey Spideys and think the X-Men and Avengers movies are pretty solid so it’s not as if I’m a snob who indiscriminately hates superhero movies either.

But all super hero comics/movies are for children, right?

Not necessarily. The ones I mentioned all appeal to adults and kids equally or even in the case of deadpool and kickass more for teens and adults than children, and same with Hellboy, Blade, and Antman series, but with the animation and tone into the spider verse felt like it was designed squarely for kids or parents to watch with their kids.

Spider Verse had what most superhero movies don't have: charm. It was light and had its funny moments, visuals were spectacular. Definite 7-8 out of 10 for me.

I think the comment that it was intended as a children's movie was valid, but that didn't diminish it in any way for me--in fact it added to its charm. I'm not a big superheros fan (despite being one), but the two I recently enjoyed the most were this and Lego Batman. Also, I try to have a good time when I'm at the movies, so I usually just drink the Flavor Aid and go along with whatever the filmmakers are trying to do.

The Lego Movies and Spiderverse are some of the very best movies made in the last ten years....don't care that they're for children.

I agree. Watched them with my granddaughter, and she loved them. I did too.

Finally saw Lawrence of Arabia on the big screen again tonight after 56 years. A few people in the audience hadn't seen it before. You could tell from the reaction to Lawrence shooting the man he saved. "Nothing is written."

Brought my gal to see Lawrence on the big screen, as well.

“It’s HOW long? ...and it has no women in it at all? Fine, I’ll go see you sausage fest.”

She’s a trooper.

Back from Telluride with a couple of takes:

1. I think I'm very unlikely to see a better movie this year than Waves, the new movie from Trey Edward Schults. It is just that good, from beginning to end. After the movie ended, I think I audibly said "wow." The way it weaved the music into the film, and (often) the film into the music is masterful. (Side note: I learned from the Q&A that the exact music was already in the screenplay before the actors read for the parts, so it is definitely integral to the story. I think I had heard rumors that it was going to be a musical when not much was known about the movie. Well, it is not a musical, but music was the bloodstream of the movie). The acting is first class. The story is a bit heavy and a bit overly dramatic, but by the same token, it felt real the whole time. And while the movie is indeed long, I almost didn't want it to ever end. Word of caution, though...as much as I loved Waves, it is not the type of movie to get "hyped" for, and probably not the type of movie that everyone will like. It's a heavy drama in a similar vein of Moonlight and Roma. Powerful story, extremely well-told, but not for everyone.

2. The Two Popes I had 0 interest in seeing when I heard about the plot -- the movie is about the transition from Pope Benedict to Pope Francis. I'd say a good 50% of the movie is these two religious figures just talking to each other about various things, with nothing else happening. When I heard that Meirelles (City of God) directed it, I perked up a bit. Even still, how good can a movie like this actually be? To cut to the chase, I think it could be a dark horse for Best Picture of the year. I didn't like it as much as Waves - I felt like it lagged a bit in the middle when it explored Pope Francis' younger life during the Argentinian revolution - but besides that, the movie zipped along and was pretty much flawless. It was extremely funny/well-written. And the performances by Pryce as Francis and Hopkins as Ratzinger were stellar (especially Hopkins). I'd say this also had the best buzz among the people we talked to, and was my fiancee's favorite film.

A few quick takes: 1. Marriage Story is damn good, and has a killer scene between Driver and ScarJo that will become an all-timer. 2. Ford vs Ferrari is fun and great, but a little bit hokey. 3. The Aeronauts was kinda like a low-rent version of Gravity; I liked it, but a little silly. 4. Uncut Gems was obnoxious and incredibly loud, and mostly not in a good way. There were walk outs, and people covering their ears. 5. The Climb is INCREDIBLY funny and original, and just a damn good movie. The two guys who made it intro'ed the movie at our 10:30pm screening and said "this is intended to be funny, you're allowed to laugh. but if you don't find it funny, then it is intended to be a drama. also, if you fall asleep, that is cool as well. Just do whatever you want to do with our movie." Dug that. 6. A Hidden Life is beyond words, and not going to touch on it. Unfortunately Malick wasn't there; I think I could've died happy if I got the chance to meet him. 7. Motherless Brooklyn was a poorly written snoozefest that I'd give a 5/10, but I think some of the olds really liked it. 8. Parasite is damn funny, the Q&A with the director and the lead actor was amazing. I wanted to like the movie a lot more than I did, but for me it fell just a mite short of being great. But obv tons of people LOVE this movie.

I'm sure more verbose and erudite people have takes on all of these movies if you're interested!
