*shrug* the critics want more explicit gay sex, to each his own. To me it sounds like a rockin' good movie as is.

I like that there wasn't more sexual content in Bohemian Rhapsody. Not because I'm afraid of it but because a) it makes the movie more accessible to a wider audience and thus exposes more people to an elite band and interesting story, and b) it's none of our business.

The press conference scene really drove home the latter point.

The sexual content is toned down enough to where I might show the movie to my kids, as they LOVE Queen. It's there just enough that we get the point of what's going on, but it's not so in your face that I have to start explaining a bunch of stuff to my elementary school-aged son (he knows what being gay is and thinks it's hilarious that people have a problem with it, just doesn't know about sex).


It really is such an enjoyable movie - I was smiling the entire time. I understand the complaints about timeline stuff, but for the vast majority of people, it won't matter because they won't notice. It doesn't take away from the fun to have a couple songs switched around.

I just read that review of Bohemian Rhapsody on RogerEbert.com. Wow did she watch a different movie than I did. That's one of the worst reviews I've ever read in my life. Her take on things seems completely wrong.

Its one of those reviews that is not really about the movie but the agenda of the person writing the review.

Not worth paying any attention. Even if you share her political views.

Happy Together made BBC's top 100. They could show it as a double feature with Bohemian Rhapsody and everybody would be happy.

I really like TDK and am a moderate Nolan fanboy, but I thought BJ brought up fair points. I also didn’t really observe those things, but it’s hard to disagree that they are there and then it’s a matter of asking why.

I’m also glad someone panned Gyllenhall in that. She is probably my least favorite actress and I don’t understand why she’s so huge (I guess Jake/parents?). Did not enjoy her in The Deuce either.

I’ll never miss an opportunity to say TDKR is steaming garbage.

I really like Maggie in a bunch of her other movies, though! She's terrific in Stranger Than Fiction.

Agree about discussing politics in movies. I believe the stories we tell can provide a powerful mechanism for change to manifest in the real world, but I also just enjoy discussing all aspects of movies for its own sake. Kind of odd to me to somehow conflate discussing a movie's politics with pushing an IRL agenda. There's potential overlap, but it's not the same thing.

Busto, RBK: thanks. I did watch Charlie Wilson's War a long time ago, but should give it a rewatch. Haven't seen Toy Story 3 for some reason even though I love those movies and I haven't seen Road to Perdition either, so I'll give those a shot.

Baltimore: Those seem like morality issues to me, which does not necessarily mean politics. Maybe I'm using the terms incorrectly as far as movies go.

I haven't seen it in a number of years, but I'm preparing a course on Romantic Comedies, so I just watched Annie Hall again. It's never been my favorite Allen film (Manhattan and Hannah and Her Sisters are), but I found it quite wistful this time. Perhaps it's that an ex- girlfriend reminds me of Diane Keaton, or maybe it's the L.A. and New York locations, or maybe it's sadder than it first appears. I'm not sure.

I like at the end that Allen's character gives his play a happy ending, despite knowing the ending. The closing montage where Allen looks at his relationship with Annie in bits and pieces really is the wistful part.

Of course, it also has some great lines, one of my favorites being Allen's comment about why he couldn't attend a concert: "My racoon had hepatitis."

Still, it's a great movie that has aged well, but it's a very different movie for me at 65 than when I was 22.

I watched Sicario 2 on an international flight. Don't get the 63% RT rating at all. I thought it was ****ing awesome and probably coulda watched it the entire 7.5 hour flight had the movie just kept going on that long

Yeah, it's incredibly wistful and romantic to me now; when I was younger, it was just funny.

Watched First Reformed yesterday, I liked it but thought it was stretched a little thin at times. Hawke is good, the ideas are mostly good but could have used some fleshing out.
