Randomly watched Woody Allen's Anything Else with Jason Biggs and Christina Ricci. I'm not sure why it got so many bad reviews at the time, it's your typical woody allen movie with Biggs playing the Woody Allen role (he was perfectly fine) and with Ricci at the height of her career. (Forgot how much a bombshell Ricci was in her prime.) Overall it's a decent little movie, not Woody's best movie but not his worst either. I laughed and was entertained, and I always enjoy a movie that's heavy with interesting/witty dialogue.

Kind of want to watch more Ricci movies from the late 90's, early 00s. I remember really liking the The Opposite of Sex but have very little recollection about it.\

I'd recommend The Ice Storm or Buffalo '66 as movies.

Just got the newly released Criterion/Jarmusch 'Night on Earth' and it looks pretty darn nice for an early 1990 movie.

?? What would you expect it to look like? Nothing is better than a good film transfer.

Jim Carrey 1994 marathon, "Nobody Stopped Him"

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective - Loved it as a teen, didn't care for it now. The physical clownish humor doesn't do it for me (I need impressive stunts or more obvious physicality like dancing). Judging by laughter of the audience it does do it for some others, so that's fine. The opening scene is such a dud. Why would it be funny that he's throwing around a box?

Obviously problematic af with standard 20th century homophobia and [spoilers]. The audience for the most part was not having that at all.

The Mask (35mm) - Also loved it as a teen, also isn't very good. It's worth revisiting once I guess but don't expect too much. It wants to be a bit Roger Rabbit with the cartoonish stuff and it definitely isn't (I saw that in 35mm last year and it's excellent). The Mask character himself isn't as charming/funny as you would hope/remember. There are good ideas but I'm not even sure how I'd go about cleaning it up - it would need a pretty big overhaul to get to a good level.

One big thing is that the supporting cast is atrociously bad (not including Cameron Diaz, she's good). It's a really strange assortment of character actors that don't work. Not to put too much blame on the actors - they're probably just poorly written and poorly cast.

Has the whiney "nice guys finish last" BS.

References in both of these movies are outdated as hell, and I feel like they were outdated for the target audience of 13 year olds even at the time. Carrey is impressive regardless.

Dumb and Dumber (35mm) - First time I've ever seen it! I don't know how I went through '94-'96 as a huge Carrey fan and never saw it, but I did.

This one is actually great. Whereas the other 2 movies are basically aimed at 8th graders who think it's funny to throw gum at someone or w/e, this is "smart" (and still hilarious for 8th graders). I laughed by far the most (barely laughed at the others), it's the best story and of course the best movie of the 3.
