On another note, sounds like Avengers: Endgame is three hours long? I'm hyped to see Antman save the universe but I might have to rent this one, good lord ain't no one got time for a three-hour superhero movie.

If you're a fan of Craig Zahler's oeuvre, and I am, you'll love Dragged Across Concrete, with Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn. Some complain about its deliberate pace and length, but I thought it was top notch....Zahler's got a surreal way with unrealistic dialog that still sounds sort of realistic.

Good stuff.

Agreed. When I saw that the runtime was over 2.5 hours, I thought it might drag a bit, but the time just flew by.

I'm in for everything Zahler puts out. And Mel Gibson is still the man.

I liked Bone Tomahawk & didn't mind Brawl in Cell Block 99 overall. He seems to be into making slow burners anyway so I'll check this one out. Speaking of Gibbo recently revisited Payback (1999) for the first time in 20 years & much preferred this time around, nicely gritty flick.

Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

I was cracking up at the scene of Gibson and Vaughn just sitting in the car while Vaughn eats. Gibson being annoyed at the smell and sound. It goes on for, like, 3 minutes!

And Bone Tomahawk is one of the best films of the decade.

Yeah, I am not a fan of long superhero movies, I will probably watch it once and never again.

Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

The Portrait of a Lady

If ever a movie was due for a reappraisal, it's this one. That it was so poorly received, and then pretty much forgotten, is very strange (with Campion hot off The Piano, and Kidman off To Die For) and sad (considering how great TPoaL is). Must have been some case of acute costume drama and/or artsiness fatigue among critics or something.

There is a good Film Comment piece on the particulars of what's going on in this movie, so I won't go into it. Better to read about it after watching anyway, its enigmatic quality was part of its intrigue for me at least. There are some delightful surprising touches and stylistic flourishes, the direction and photography in this movie is breathtaking. Great score too.

And just look at this cast: Nicole Kidman (perfect for the role and possibly career-best here), Barbara Hershey, John Malkovich, Martin Donovan, Richard E. Grant, Mary-Louise Parker, Christian Bale, Viggo Mortensen, Shelley Winters, Shelley Duvall, John Gielgud.

Also watched a couple more Wenders movies in the Mubi retrospective, Wrong Move and The American Friend. The first had some cool parts but was a little boring, the latter was very good. Kings of the Road up next.

This sounds like a huge chore.

I'm a little surprised they didn't try to squeeze some more $ out of it by breaking it up into one more film if it's going to be this long.

If there's a movie that I would want to be 3 hours, it's either a Nolan film or the mega compilation Avengers stuff. I'm cool with it.

Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

This weekend I'm attending a 24 hour movie marathon at The Cinematheque in Vancouver. This will be my third time attending. It's a freaking awesome experience, the programming is top-notch. They often screen films that are hard to find/hard to see, have themes. In 2015 the theme was "Time" so we watched movies where time is an important factor: Groundhog Day, Rope, Before Sunset, etc. In 2017 the theme was "Urban Living" we watched movies like Man with a Movie Camera, The White Balloon, and Do the Right Thing. I can't wait to see what they program this time around. We have no idea which movies are playing until the actual movie starts. There's little time between screenings so we get a lot of movies in there, with a meal break at around dinner time and a few extended snack breaks. If you're curious about the lineup for each year, I've left Letterboxd links for them below.

2015 Lineup

2017 Lineup

Dante’s Inferno taught us there are nine levels of hell. They are;

1) dating someone who won’t watch “movies with subtitles”

2) when your mom won’t stop asking you questions in a theatre

3) watching any superhero movie

4) watching a three hour superhero movie

5) watching Enter The Void

6) being only allowed to watch PG movies for life

7) having to watch all films in 3D

8) only being allowed to watch films with budgets greater than $100M

9) watching a Transformer movie

Was wondering if enter the void would be mentioned. You really snubbed it when you made your ten worst movies list.

Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

This week in theaters I saw Final Destination 2 in 35mm and Us.

FD2 is better. Really elaborate, clever, and funny death scenes, and amazing tension at times. I haven't seen any of the others in the franchise.

Us:

Spoiler:

I'd still see Peele's next without question regardless of reviews assuming it's still in the same genre ballpark.
