i watched that early part of the movie about 2-3x per week when i was 16

downloaded that song as well and would play it a bunch, people always thought it made me a weirdo but it's such a well put together piece of cinema, and in a war movie no less

The 1st scene with Caviezel and Sean Penn.

He says we can't all be smart(referring to himself). Then a bit later that he's seen a better world. Like a child. That's how you attain the spiritual discernment.

I interpret it that way anyway, parallel with the teaching in the Bible.

Really enjoyed Theater Camp

Knew nothing at all going into it and was very happy with the choice.

Theater Camp was a lot of fun. What a great final scene. I didn’t even know I was a huge Molly Gordon fan but I clearly am. She was Claire in The Bear and also the ex-gf in Shiva Baby. And she can write and direct? Yeah, she’s one to watch.

I guess that runs in the family.

I only work 90 days a year (full time professor), so I have few responsibilities and plenty of time to kill. The other day I watched three movies. I'll watch at least 30 in January. I should keep track.

How are you a movie freak without a Letterboxd account? It’s not only a great movie app - it’s possibly the best app I’ve ever used.

I should fire up Letterboxd, all I do is keep a running watchlist in a notes app.

Maestro (2023) recounts the rise to fame and success of Leonard Bernstein, and his relationship with his wife Felicia. As I'm not into orchestral music and am not any sort of audiophile, the gravity of his works and place in history is kind of lost on someone like me. I would never be able to tell you something was a Bernstein work. I figured this disclaimer bears mentioning when considering my review and appreciation of it all.

Anyways; as a film I thought it was kind of meh. Cooper and Mulligan acted well, but he was incredibly hard to understand at times as Bernstein. Did LB really sound like that? I should want some interviews or something, but it really detracted from the viewing experience. The film also drags incredibly slowly during the first half with musical numbers, until the point which some actual conflict between Leonard and Felicia arises. It did a better job at keeping my attention from that point on.

It's not Marvel-level stuff by any means, but Hollywood has really been churning out these musical figure biopics the last handful of years. This one has got a decent amount of praise but I wouldn't recommend it widely, it's more of a character study than something like Elvis was, and I think Maestro would bore most people even more than it did me. 2/5

Catching up on Jeopardy! episodes, and I did get an answer about Leonard Bernstein and West Side Story.

So there's that. Thanks Maestro.

saw poor things with emma stone and ruffalo.

it was amazing, i personally rarely ever give movies a 10 , but for me , this was basically there in terms of the wit , storytelling and originality.

Blackberry - The rise and fall of the first smartphone, although did anyone think that's what it was at the time? It always struck me as a product used by offices. I don't recall many people having a personal Blackberry.

Anyway, it's a surprisingly fun film about the toxic effect of ambition and how success changes people. Those who were once at technological cutting edge get left hopelessly behind, and they've lost the innovative spark that took them to the top. I remember how desperate Blackberry's attempts to remain relevant seemed as the iPhone completely took over.

I basically never give a 10 after a single viewing. I actually did that with Spider-Verse 2 last year and then I re-watched it in December and had to admit I got a little too excited after that initial watch. I think it’s a solid 9 now but masterpiece is a stretch.

Poor Things felt like a masterpiece to me. It was basically a perfect film for my tastes. I’ve been dying to rewatch it. I’m keeping it at a 9 for now but I did recently bump it to #1 on my 2023 list.
