Watched the movie Miami Connection because of the How Did This Get Made? Podcast and holy sht was it a fun movie, in a ultra cheesy 80s “so ridiculous it’s great” way

The plot features a coke syndicate, a motorcycle riding ninja crime organization, and a group of college students who are orphans, martial arts experts, and play in a martial arts themed rock band.

The special effects in the action scenes were actually really impressive I thought, some cool and brutal looking martial arts moves and a bunch of limb severing, impaling, and decapitation in sword fights.

One of the hdtgm hosts said it was his favorite movie they’ve ever done on the show. Highly recommend watching while high and then listening to the podcast afterwards

Also, late to the party on this one, but cosign that Free Solo was great, very spectacular footage. Fyre festival documentaries on Netflix and Hulu were both good too, Netflix one better I thought.

Dominic: you mentioned Amelie was one of your all time favorites and I loved it too. I only watched it once, many years ago, and now that you reminded me of it I want to watch it again.

I watched some Kurosawa in High School and remember being bored but I think I was too immature and want to try again. Yojimbo a good place to start?

This breaks my heart

Selma Blair talks with Robin Roberts in her first on-camera interview since she was diagnosed with MS.

She walked the red carpet the other night with a cane, looking beautiful as ever.

46 years old. Jesus.

Watched Shoplifters just now and thought it was great, thanks for the recommendation.

Spoiler:
Sad ending though. It was good/realistic, but I wanted a happy ending because I liked the characters. I thought it was going to end at the beach

I should watch more foreign films, they always seem to captivate me more than most domestic movies. My favorite that I can think of is probably Lives of Others.

I think Yojimbo might be a good place to start -- there's plenty of action in it, it has a good sound track and it's a fun watch. I like Kurosawa a lot, but it's something about the mood that always draws me in -- it might be what Dom calls 'tone' , I'm not sure -- but some of it really needs to be seen on a big screen. Anyway, I can watch Yojimbo at home and be perfectly happy.

It’s a true story about wrestling (the fake kind), something I know nothing about and couldn’t care less about. I should have hated it but instead I absolutely loved it.

It’s touching, smart and funny as hell. I literally laughed out loud many times and cried a couple. I can make that claim about very few films.

In a lot of ways it’s your standard sports underdog movie but done so well.

Grade: A

Saw this yesterday... not much I can really add to this review except to say that it wasn’t as good as Green Book.

Have to agree with this assessment. Saw it tonight and it pulled all the right strings. I didn't snap to the fact that it was a true story until the credits when all the doppelgängers started showing up on the screen.

Next week I'm showing Annie Hall in class, and I watched it again tonight to prepare. I know the students won't get most of the jokes or references, but I think I've established the historical context well enough for them to understand its importance.

Following Annie Hall with When Harry Met Sally . . . , and I'm anticipating raising the question from the movie about whether men and women can be friends or does sex get in the way. Of course, I have my ways of dealing with that, but I'm kinda coming down on Harry's side. Sex does get in the way.

best line in just about any movie is when Sally is all weepy about her ex getting engaged to someone else so quickly after they broke up...and she's like, "it's not that he didn't want to get married...it's that he didn't want to marry ME."

I often use that with female friends when they complain about a guy who wouldn't commit. "Maybe he just didn't want to commit to YOU."

I've lost a few friends that way lol.

jesus, actor Luke Perry suffered a stroke and is in the hospital.

It ****ing freaks me out when people 10 years younger than me are having strokes.

Oh, I won't say it in a neutral voice. They've already developed certain expectations for me, which I have mostly fulfilled.

I should add that my administrative assistant is taking my class. She is probably my best friend at work, and we go out to dinner after every class. Fortunately, she is happily married, so I can claim with every confidence that men and women can be friends without sex getting in the way. But I really can't make the same claim about divorced or single friends. And I know that, too.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to discussing both films with the class.

Most perfect woman ever made.

Even in B&W in High Noon she was more beautiful than other women are in technicolor.

It's good to be the Prince.

Should have contrasted the style with something like Sleeper...

I'm doing a course in Romantic Comedy, so I've used older films so far. I gave the students a list of genre elements and had them apply it to The 39 Steps last week. Not sure how something like Sleeper could fit.

sally: someday
harry: in 8 years!

Sleeper is very romantic. It involves the Orgasmatron

Haha. In discussing Bringing Up Baby, I mentioned that the fiancee is named Miss Swallow because she doesn't. I'm not sure what I can get away with now.
