Shaving Ryan’s Privates is a good title but I don’t know if it was ever made into a film

A lot of his stuff is on Kanopy, Hoopla and other Services that cater to libraries. I would start with Shoplifters and After the Storm. Mabarosi ad I wish are 2 I liked but may be too sentimental for you.

When searching for Hirokazu Koreeda, just search for Hirokazu, as the romanization of his given name varies.

BTW, Border is great! I had a review up on 2+2 but it disappeared.

Searching for Bobby's Fissure would be a good gay porn title.

Quoting myself:

Shoplifters - Japanese movie about a ‘family’ that has to shoplift to make ends meet. They come across a young girl who is being abused by her parents and reluctantly decide to protect her.

Despite it’s tranquil pace, there is so much going on in this film. All the family members have their secrets and are riddled with conflicting emotions and motivations; they’re simultaneously generous and selfish, kind and cruel, brave and cowardly. This isn’t a plot-driven film, but there is a story that is slowly drip-fed until it is suddenly revealed in full force. The payoff has such an impact because the characters have been so delicately developed.

I have been reminded by this derail that we recently watched Pumping Iron Watching Ahnold play mental games with everyone in his path was fascinating. Although he comes across as arrogant sometimes, he WAS leaps and bounds better than his competition. Even my wife liked this one.

Arnold apparently has some kind of degree from the small university in my hometown. I remember it being a big deal (well, locally) when Pumping Iron came out. You know, Local grad does good."

Just watched Tarkovsky's Nostalghia. I think I need to watch a few Romcoms after nights spent watching EO, Yi-Yi, Border, A Brighter Summer Day, and Pather Panchali.

Nostalghia, which for some reason I thought I had seen before, is, as are most of Tarkovsky's work, a meditation on memory, time, and religion. An absorbing film. Great final shot.

Watched Border(2018) last night. Mind blown. The two lead actors took their difficult roles seriously and put on masterful performances. The roles required several hours of makeup. Warning: Highly unusual story which may give you strange dreams. It makes people who complain about other people's non-standard lifestyles in our society look like nit-pickers.

Somebody mentioned The Salton Sea yesterday, I'd always heard it was pretty good so I gave it a try last night. It is pretty good and covered some of the same crazy methhead territory years before Breaking Bad got there so points for that too.

I've probably seen The Salton Sea more than any other movie. There was a period of my life where I was kinda obsessed with it.

Pooh Bear GOAT obv.

Avatar: The Way of Water If you liked the first one, you'll like this one. Pretty much a reboot. Same bad guy. Same good guy.
Spoiler:
Same outcome.
Same special effects.

Women Talking (2022) is an adaptation of a novel based on true events of a Mennonite colony in Bolivia. It pretty much delivered on what it set out to do, and lived up to its title, as about 90% of the film is simply women talking, in the loft of a barn. If I didn't know otherwise I would have thought this was adapted right from a play, it is essentially a single stage production. Performances were solid and were what kept me engaged. For what its worth it has to be the shortest duration BP nomination, so here's to not having to spend 150+ minutes to watch it. 7/10

Kind of like an original Twilight Zone episode on meth, lol. A "boy meets girl" romance story.

Erick Weber is a pretty entertaining movie guy with his streaming podcast on YouTube called "Midnight Movie Talk." He's crazy for Tar so I finally got around to watching it and I thought it was great, everything about it. Weber also loves M3gan so I watched it on Peacock and I cannot recommend. Pretty boring for the first hour and then the entertaining part at the end wasn't great. I think Bride of Chucky is a lot better than M3gan.

Next I think I'll watch Decision to Leave, Bones and All, or Aftersun.

Yeah, I saw Ericks interesting review of Infinity Pool 2022. I like another film directed by Brandon Cronenberg but this one kind of lost me. So I two agreed with Erick who also wasn't thrilled with it. Still, every film has at least one memorable spot. As he mentions, the scene where Mia Goth gives someone an unexpected "handy job" was one of them.

I posted about the humble, low budget Aftersun 2022 and its creative use of flashbacks and imagined scenes earlier in this thread. Its a psychological mystery for the viewer. The acting is top notch. Its my favorite of the bunch you mentioned.
