What an extraordinary summer that was...and I remember seeing them all in the theater back then!
Not to mention Poltergeist was released the same day as TWOK and Raiders of the Lost Ark was released one week after Tron.

You're right. That was a re-release in 1982 on July 16th.

Prey was a pretty good kick ass actioner, and best entry into the Predator franchise since Predator 2.

Another theory is that the garbage truck carried hitmen who Max had hired to knock off Noodles if Noodles had knocked off Max. Max went out to call them off.

In my medium-sized city, Raiders Of The Lost Ark was so popular that it ran for more than a year. It was the first movie I saw more than once in a theater - once at the first-run regular price cinema not long after it opened, and again about a year later at the discount second-run cinema. Actually, I think the second-run cinema had some kind of celebration when the movie had run there for a year, so including the first run place, it was probably close to a year and a half total.

These days I often don't even hear about a movie I want to see until it's almost (or already) gone from the theaters, and there are no second-run places convenient to where I live. The old system was so much better, where movies would play in fewer cinemas, but for much longer, so you always had lots of choices. Now it's generally all the same 6-8 movies, playing in several different rooms in every multiplex, and you only get a few weeks to see any individual film.

I went to watch it at the Apollo Theater, a local run movie theater in my town.

I remember not knowing anything about it, just that my friend wanted to see it since it was from Lucas and Spielberg.

Was very impressed, and it ran for a year at that theater, at least.

Trying to remember any other movie that had a run like that and I can't.

When I was a kid (Chicago) all of the movies opened downtown where they were exclusive for at least a couple weeks. Then they would release in all of the outlying and suburban theaters. Going downtown for a brand new movie was a huge treat. Once they made it to the outliers almost everything was a double feature. No ciniplexes in those days. We called going to the movies "going to the show". Maybe its misplaced nostalgia but I prefer those days.

I think the first Pirates of the Caribbean may have run for a couple of years in Austin. It might be still running now, but they tore down its Dollar Theater when they widened a highway.

As me and my GF are huge Olivia Newton John fans, we watched Xanadu tonight in her honor. My GF was 10 when it came out in 1980, still plays the soundtrack all the time, and she ADORES the movie - it doesn't matter how truly awful the film is lol.

Strangely, I had never seen it...

Wow. What a completely inept, strange movie. Gene Kelly, ONJ, and Michael Beck are all completely charming, but holy crap, the director had no clue what he was doing and the script is laughably bad. Fun songs and dancing and that ROLLER SKATING FINALE!

Seriously, it's a bad movie, but Gene was still cool at 68 and ONJ will always be the most beautiful woman who ever lived to me. I really shoulda ate a gummy before watching this one.

raise your hand if you've watched an entire movie beginning to end while sitting in a car, and not on a phone or tablet

Check out the How Did This Get Made podcast when they talked about this movie.

It was nuts, and it shows.

I think the only movies I ever went to were drive-in until I was 12 or so.

Mom and Dad took my brothers and me to the drive-in often. Brothers would fall asleep within half an hour, and I would watch all of Dr. Zhivago, Mondo Cane, and others not meant for 9 year olds. Dad took us to see sci-fi movies. God, it's been years since I've seen Journey to the Seventh Planet.

Friend's older sisters took us to see A Hard Day's Night.

Watched The Hunt for Red October last night. My friends think I'm a bit high-falutin in my film choices, but, God, I love submarine movies of all kinds.

Without googling: What submarine movie did Dom Rickles appear in,?

My dad took us to the drive in when we were young and we saw a ton of kung Fu flicks.

Don't remember many, but I do remember that they showed a skin flick sometimes as the late film ..

Raiders of the Lost Ark (and to a slightly lesser extent it’s sequels) bring me back to being a kid more than any other movie. Have had a crush on Karen Allen since, too
