Ya gotta love Korean vengeance flicks. Koreans seem obsessed with it. Probably the most violent place on earth since Elizabethan England. (Cf. Shakespeare et alii.)

You definitely want to see this one. Wikipedia states that this was the highest grossing film in Korea in 2010, and I believe it. A Lee-Child-style hero -- a mysterious stranger who has fallen from grace -- and a script that shamelessly checks every box. Plus a heroically-cute 2nd-grade orphan-girl, both spirited and brave, is placed in dire peril! Mandatory viewing for genre movie fans.

Check it out!

There's a scene where the hero escapes police custody by using his cap as a weapon and then crashing through a second floor window to the outside ground. Looks like it was not faked nor done by a stunt double but not 100% sure. Crazy Korea films. The end of movie knife fight is too gruesome to show.

Yeah, that's where he sees a little girl getting into a van, but he can't get downstairs because he's surrounded. When he goes through the window, they don't cut away from his face as you would expect, and I thought, "That's really him!" but then thought, "Nah, can't be."

Maybe it was...

Great flick. Wiki says this is the last flick he made. I wonder if he got hurt?

yeah, that was good tough guy role I should include in Caan's better films. I guess I should include Brian's Song as well since his acting elevated that movie from a being simply twee to being hagiographical.

Maybe too lowbrow for this thread, but my thoughts on Thor Love and Thunder

Spoiler:
The reason it doesn't work relative to Ragnarok is the antagonist. Goldblum's Grandmaster was kind of a silly villain with silly motivations and goals, so the silliness between Thor and Hulk kept a consistent tone. In L&T, the villian is a serious guy who has a very unpleasant motivations and goals (to say nothing of the depressing Jane subplot), making the transition between him and the meant to be funny parts very jarring. Movie doesn't know what it wants to be, tries to be everything to everyone, and ends up being nothing.

Decided to give Ragnarok a try despite not enjoying much of the superhero or Avengers fare I've watched the last few years. Lasted 30 minutes before turning it off. Didn't find it entertaining at all and I have no idea why these movies are so popular.

ragnarok was about the only superhero movie i genuinely enjoyed - it was more of a slapstick action comedy though and that's probably why i liked it more - the parts that tried to get all serious and get serious superhero moments etc were thes ones that sucked the most

They’re popcorn flicks with meta hijinks. I can definitely understand not liking them, but to act clueless as to their popularity is silly. This is the evolution of the blockbuster.

Everything Everywhere All At Once

A

I finally got around to watching this one and it was excellent.

I have a bone to pick with you guys crapping on this excellent movie, while at the same time praising the newest Batman as high art. This thread is like some weird bizarro world.

My first rule about movies is that you can always tell whether a movie will be good or not by its movie poster.

This looks like a film an algorithm created. Everything everywhere in the history of the world all crammed into the same movie! There's something for everyone to like!

A most excellent poster! It's not your fault that you can't understand it, you simply didn't do enough acid in the 60s.

There may be an alternate universe where Michelle Yeoh appears in a bad movie, but it lies undiscovered.

House of Gucci - I really enjoyed watching the individual actors in this one. I'm a huge Gaga fan and would probably watch her read the dictionary. Leto is one of my favorite actors. Pacino is great when he doesn't go full Pacino and he really toned it down for this one. I find Driver pretty meh, but he didn't bring the movie down.

Given all that, the movie itself was watchable but nothing special.

Took my mom to see Top Gun... she had no idea that it was a new movie and not the original.
Theater was PACKED on a Wednesday for a movie that came out MONTHS ago.

The Big Short

Don't Look Up

Saw both of these recently. The Big Short wasn't that interesting. A bunch of boring Wall Street guys in suits (and one boring Wall Street guy in t-shirts) make bets that earn them a lot of money. If you've read the news in the last 10 years you already know what happens. The fact that Selena Gomez and Margot Robbie have cameos to explain complicated finance stuff didn't make it more entertaining.

2 out of 5

Don't Look Up had a clever premise. The cast is good as well. The allegory was spot on, though a bit on the nose so if you disagree with message you likely won't enjoy it. The problem was that the movie was too long. It started off good and had a good ending but the middle muddled along for a while. If they cut about 30-45 min it would've been a lot better.
