I just saw Sisters Brothers. Pretty dark. They left out a lot of good stuff from the book. In my theatre, it was categorized as a comedy. Visuals were very good and the gunfire sounds were cool.

So I just got an email from Filmstruck, letting me know that the service is shutting down 11/29 and that I'll be refunded any pro-rated money for my subscription, as I paid in full for a year.

I'm sad.

Kindergarten Teacher is creepy as ****. Maggie Gyllenhall is the teacher and amateur poet who becomes obsessed with a kid in her her class who appears to be the Mozart of poetry. There is nothing sexual or romantic about their relationship yet it’s still deeply unsettling. My friend had to look away several times because she was so disturbed but my eyes were glued to the screen. Great film.

Mid 90s

Street Fighter 2; Breakin'; D.A.R.E.; Shorty's; Droors: Fashion T's.

Jesus smoked: Kools.

Come back with: Some skills.

If a doctor gave it to you: Can it possibly be bad?

Let's go and check out: Angela's room.

Series of 90s LA skater vignettes hung on a coming-of-age frame. They don't fit perfectly; it stops without ending. Talented actors. Fun to watch. Check it out.

Borg vs. McEnroe, Janus Metz Pedersen, 2017

From the age of 8 until 25, tennis was the most important thing in my life. I played on a collegiate national championship team and I failed at becoming a pro, although I did get to play a few big names like Yannick Noah, Jimmy Arias, Brad Gilbert and Tom Gullickson. I also got to play a few mixed doubles exhibitions with Chris Evert (her brother was my coach as a junior) and helped train Steffi Graf for a couple US Opens.

So Borg vs. McEnroe is obviously a movie in my wheelhouse, and relates the lives of the two combatants up to their famous 1980 Wimbledon finals match. Jimmy Connors was my favorite player, but Borg was a close second - but he was like a machine...you looked on in awe at his fitness, his almost robot-like non-emotive way of playing. John McEnroe was Super Brat, but exciting to watch. He was like a musician on the court, a genius with the tennis racket, you only held your breath while he played waiting for the inevitable emotional meltdown.

This movie is directed by Danish documentarian Pedersen, and it's a wise choice, as we get into the heads of both Borg and McEnroe, as children, young adults, and, finally, as the men who play one another.

The performances are pretty remarkable, especially Borg-lookalike, Sverrir Gudnason. It's an explosive performance, as he plays Borg as a seething volcano who has trained himself not to show any emotion on the court. Borg's actual son plays Borg as a young boy and does a bang up job of copying his dad's slap-shot backhand stroke. Stellan Skarsgård plays Borg's coach Lennart Bergelin, and it's amazing how much he resembles the real man.

Other unknowns play real tennis players like Connors, Vitas Gerulaitis, Peter Fleming, Brian Gottfried and others. And for me, it was like one, big nostalgia tour. Lots of fun seeing the guy I named my dog after (Vitas!) partying it up at Studio 54. The actor who plays McEnroe's dad also resembles the real man quite a bit, especially when he's wearing his famous floppy sailor's hat at matches.

Probably the only weak link is Shia LaBouf as McEnroe. He has the right manic energy and chip-on-his-shoulder personality, but he comes across as simply a douche, without the McEnroe charm.

This is much more than a movie about a tennis match, however...it's about the inner workings and psychology of what makes a champion. Both men are playing not only for themselves, but strong father figures. Both men push away family and friends in their drive to be No. 1.

The tennis sequences are pretty damn great...and they would have to be, as their big match takes up about 30 minutes of screen time. The filmmakers seamlessly blend their lead actors with their tennis doubles, so it never looks like either actor is not on the court.

The nostalgic factor is huge for someone like me, and seeing Borg's black-rainbow Donnay racket was a real blast from the past, as was the hair styles and Fila and Sergio Tachini tennis wear.

This is a good movie...probably a little more meaningful for someone like me, but still worth a look if you're not a tennis fan.

Watched MERU on Netflix Friday night after hearing so much about it and never actually getting around to watching - was blown away by both the storytelling and the actual physical feat and cinematography. Truly an epic film and one of the best documentaries I've ever seen.

After watching that I had to go see FREE SOLO on the big screen as I've followed Alex Honnold's career since he was in his early 20s. Holy **** was that the most nerve wracking film to watch 10x worse than any incredibly scary horror film. A couple of times I almost had to close my eyes and not watch despite knowing the outcome was a success. This has to be one of the greatest human physical and mental feats in history.

The backstory, failed attempts, his relationship with his girlfriend (who is absolutely gorgeous in a "I'd marry that girl in a second" kind of way) and his overall unique personality and sense of humor makes the achievement so much greater.

I don't understand how a human being is able to do something so immensely challenging like that and be happy and almost exuberant, when fellow elite climbers are watching it in sheer agony and shock. One thing it did make me feel is good god my life is so boring and dull lol.

I've never been to Yosemite but now I def want to visit and camp there.

Highly highly recommend you catch this on the big screen even if you give zero ****s about climbing/sports/etc. Would have loved to see Meru on the big screen instead of TV too.

When I heard about Filmstruck's demise, my first thought was that John Cole and his ilk in the Lounge movie thread would be taking this hard. Thoughts and prayers in this difficult time, my friends!

Thanks for yet another well written post. I'm a senior tennis buff and will give this a look. (I even have an autographed pic of McEnroe hanging in my office.) Tennis playing in film is usually not done well so I tend to pass on these movies.

after watching the frist halloween I was on a slasher mood and just watched scream and scream 2. love these movies. they are a bit cheesy but they are probably my favorite slasher franchise. neve campbell is beautiful and the meta jokes are great.

also, just watched alex honnold's new interview with joe rogan on youtube. the guy is awesome and I'd give my left arm to watch free solo right now.

Has there ever been a good adaptation of Robin Hood? The only one I've ever seen that I liked was starring Daffy Duck.

Alan Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham made the Costner version a treat. I'd put Sean Connery/Audrey Hepburn way up there, but I like just about everything Robin Hood, including Daffy Duck and Richard Greene.
