The Swordsman Pretty cool Korean swordfighting flick. You know the plot - personal tragedy forces a retired badass to pick up his sword again and dice up some bad guys. Great fight sequences, although I can't help but roll my eyes at the one guy versus an army fights. Yeah, yeah, it's a standard conceit in martial arts films but still... Oi, generic cannon fodder bad guy! Why are you just standing there watching while the hero is killing all your mates? Stab him in the back! Stab him in the... ok fine, wait for your turn to be slaughtered, see if I care.

The matrix 4 is weeks away. What are your expectations for it? For me, if it’s better than matrix 3 and worse than 2 I’ll be satisfied. The first movie is pretty hard to top. Nearly impossible

Watched this with my wife while she was really mad at me. It was a really uncomfortable experience. Good film though.

Big fat who cares, both sequels were bad. There was never any reason for them to exist other than money.

Matrix 2 was quality, especially the first 30 minutes. You obviously know nothing about the bros and the trilogy. They wrote all three before the first one was even filmed. Have you seen the trailers? Seems to have potential and is 10x better than any other movie that’s come out in the past few years. I was excited for Dune and ended up walking out halfway through. There really aren’t any good movies anymore.

No high expectations, Matrix was ground breaking filmmaking.

Much like Star Wars 77, Terminator 2 or the Dark Knight, it set a new a new standard in filmmaking.

This kinda looks like **** TBH.

whatever

It's hard to take you seriously if you really believe this.

A far better gauge than a trailer is the Wachowski's previous output, which has been at best interesting but flawed since the first Matrix. I hope the new one will be good but there's more reason to think it won't be.

I'm wachowski'd out... story wise, but those action scenes are the absolute nuts, he/they have a great visual style for action.

My son and I saw Licorice Pizza last night. I loved it; he didn’t. There are some natural comparisons to Tarantino’s OUAT…IH - LA in similar time period is obvious, but pacing is also somewhat resonant. I really enjoyed both movies but found I needed to make a conscious effort to let go of expectations and trust that we were in good hands.

Saw a line somewhere that John C Reilly discussed how he couldn’t take his eyes off of Alana Haim whenever she is on screen - I definitely agree with that. She isn’t conventionally beautiful but I found her incredibly alluring, and the chemistry between her and Cooper Hoffman absolutely made the movie.

My son’s main critiques were seeming haphazard plotting and very little insight into character motivations.

it's quite strange...all the Haim sisters look deformed when I see photos of them...but film/video of them makes them look attractive....

I don’t think it’s Lirva but someone like that.

Edit: after looking at about thirty or so posts the account is a bit too mean to be Lirva. But clearly an ex ooter/politics poster. Maybe Kelhus ? W/e

I've always suspected that the OOT mods have a way to redirect them here.

The Blackcoat's Daughter, Osgood Perkins, 2016

I had been meaning to watch this ever since seeing and loving Perkins' I Am the Pretty Thing Who Lives In the House a few years ago...GF and I both loved the atmospheric. slow build-up of that movie, and thought it was lovely - like a modern Haunting Of Hill House.

Well, we finally sat down last night to see it.

Wow.

This one is also atmospheric and starts off slowly building towards its horror...but when it gets there, it hits with the force of a sledgehammer. The Blackcoat's Daughter is disturbingly violent, but not in a "torture-porn" way. Perkins (son of Anthony) has a real talent for the frame...every one is meaningful and beautiful and fraught with tension. You can just tell in the first few minutes when a filmmaker has a handle on his craft, and Perkins does.

While there is some missing backstory and one instance of an incredible coincidence (I think - I may have to watch it again), the movies is so well made and so chillingly effective as a horror movie, that it seems nit-picky to complain.

Lucy Boynton and a frighteningly unhinged Kiernan Shipka play high school girls who are stuck, mostly on their own, over a winters' break at a Catholic boarding school. Emma Roberts plays a woman who seems to have escaped from a mental institution and hitches a ride with James Remar and Lauren Holly, heading back to the school.

The cast, the cinematography, the editing - everything combine to make this one truly, disturbingly scary.

Smart horror is the best horror.

So I have been going to the theater a lot lately. Here are the movies I have seen recently:

The French Dispatch B+
Spoiler:
If you like Wes Anderson movies, you will like this one.

Dune B+.
Spoiler:
I went in not knowing anything about the source material or watching the original movie. It was better than I expected it to be.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife B-
Spoiler:
The movie starts very strong, but completely falls apart in the third act.

Last Night in Soho C+
Spoiler:
This movie also starts very strong, but the third act has one of the biggest drop-offs in quality I have seen in recent memory.

Belfast C-
Spoiler:
I really wanted to like this movie, but it was not meant to be. The film is a little too autobiographical, which is to say that the struggles that the characters go through are really not that significant. Ultimately, it's a movie where almost nothing happens, and that just isn't interesting.

Have since tacked on The Big Sleep, the Last Seduction, and Altman’s The Player, and going thru mschu’s recs next which all look amazing and I’d heard of none of them.

Yeah I’ve been bummed about not being able to find CA Split. Didn’t know PB was still a thing but may end up there for it.

Also watched Dune, thought it was mesmerizing, and Promising Young Woman, which was well done but not really my scene I suppose

I always wanted them to do one of the sequels or prequels and let Russell Crowe play Dudley Smith.

I love it when I find new (to me) things in an old movie.

Caught the end of Stalag 17 tonight. Only now realized the bad guy was Peter Graves.
