Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

Got a text from a friend that said “Titane dude.... Titane... Holy ****** ****!!”

So I watched it..... I’m confused....

Same director as Raw which I thought was great!! This wasn’t nearly as good, to me, but I’ve certainly never seen anything like it.

I"m not the best at illustrating my view on a movie but thought this was done really well. Only watched it because I went on sort of a Adam Brody binge after randomly watching "Kid Detective" and then googling him and seeing that he had two other recent movies with decent imdb scores. This one and "ready or not". Some reason I've always sort of enjoyed the comedy in Adam Brody movies so I'd thought I'd give this other one a shot.

Anyway, he is barely in this one so not about him but after watching this movie I googled it and saw that it was sort of based on a real life case of a "promising young man" that was accused of rape.

Thought this movie was really good on multiple levels. For one it sort of flipped the switch on "promising young man" by showing a female character involved through a friend in a similar situation. In real life a man was sort of let off for possibly committing similar acts because of his reputation at the time. I really like though how it didn't victimize the men in this film or even the women. Young people made a mistake and were not held accountable for the mistake according to the law. They weren't bad people. Well, maybe the groom's best friend held low morals but overall you didn't feel like they deserved to spend life in prison for their choice but overall lives were changed in this movie. Also, never once did they mention the word rape in this movie or ever show anything that suggested such an action while the viewer the whole time knew this act had taken place. Just great film-making when you can get your point across without having to word it or show it on screen.

The Trip (Norwegian comedy-horror, not the Winterbottom one) is lots of fun. As can be expected, it's quite silly, but very entertaining. On Netflix.

Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

For my Lounge friends:

Center Stage (Stanley Kwan, 1991)

New Maggie Cheung movie added to Criterion Channel this month. She plays Ruan Lingyu, the legendary Chinese silent film star who killed herself at the height of her fame in 1935. Meta-biopic, sometimes documentary, sometimes spliced together with scenes from Ruan's movies in the 1930s.

I liked this, but it wasn't quite as strong as it could have been. Maggie really plays herself playing Ruan more than she plays the actress, and often that works because she's Maggie Cheung, but there's just something missing, some combination of kinetic energy, emotional instability, physical violence, and a downward spiral of hopeless despair that you might otherwise expect with the story of a 25 year old famous actress who kills herself after tabloid smears and abuse from the men in her life.

Still, I'm glad I watched this and would recommend. Make sure to check out this 15 minute short documentary about Ruan Lingyu first, it helped me keep track of who was who in her life:

Free Guy on Disney+

If you like video games (or if you at least understand some of the form, and want to see a fun, mostly family-friendly comedy actioner [apart from one arm breaking moment]), try and watch Free Guy on Disney+. It kind of feels like Deadpool, Lego The Movie and Ready Player One had a baby, and came up with something quite charming.

Watched The Forgotten Battle on Netflix over the weekend. If you like WW2 movies it's definitely worth the watch.

It's no SPR or Dunkirk but I thoroughly enjoyed it
