Ad Astra rocks! Daddy issues in space? Sign me up. Dug the action bits, too.

Last Night in Soho - Wanted to enjoy this but it missed the mark completely. A countryside girl moves to London to attend a fashion design school. She moves into an old building and she begins having wild dreams about becoming the kind of fashionista she dreams of from the mid-60s. Fancy dresses/gowns, makeup, hot men, dancing, music. All the elements are there! It spirals into a nightmare where the lead cannot tell reality from fantasy. The long setup is not worth the payoff. Felt emotionally attached to one character, a cute guy who I wanted more of. If you're curious, catch it on cheap night? It LOOKS gorgeous. I'm a visual dude but left the theater feeling disappointed. =(

Basil Rathbone is the definitive.

Something's crazy with the Forums, but I liked Ad Astra. It didn't make any sense, and that will bother certain viewers.

The Sparks Brothers music doc by Edgar Wright is the best movie I’ve seen this year.

Absolutely joyous and fascinating and funny and weird and a testament to just keep doing your own thing. Sparks is the greatest band you’ve never heard from, with over 25 albums since the 70s. They get just a bit of success and then change what their doing completely lol. But they’re like the Woody Allen of music…churning out work after work with no regard for whatever is popular at the moment.

Great movie. Greater band.

Been wanting to see that... just haven't taken the time as yet.

All this and the new Kraftwek world tour kicking off soon... life is good.

I loved Sparks Brothers. I know I reviewed it here, but can't find it. Watching them go through their various incarnations and the interviews cut into the story were hilarious.

Coda A hearing teenager in an other wise all deaf family is torn between helping her family through tough times and pursuing her passion for singing.

Man oh man. Thoroughly predictable. Pulls out all of the typical movie stops to yank at your heartstrings. But, damn, it was good. Highly recommend.

I need to rewatch this. Sixteen Candles is one of my top guilty pleasures.

Agree 100% It's fairly paint by numbers but man is it ever effective.

Eternals Never thought I'd see a swing and a miss from Zhao, but maybe that's a result of the Marvel process. Super long, super dull, boring exposition slammed over your head. The action is dull as well. I was so excited for this one but was let down in a big way.

Two of my favorite movies:

The Drop with Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini <---loved it.

An oldie but goody, A Streetcar Named Desire with Marlon Brando Vivien Leigh

Anything with Tom Hardy in it is wonderful. Peaky Blinders, not a movie but an amazing binge watch worthy series. Tom Hardy is amazing as a Jewish gang leader that goes head to head with Cillian Murphy, leader of the Peaky Blinders. Amazing show.

Any suggestions for movies like The Drop would be appreciated.

Gone Baby Gone is a good film.

A History of Violence is also similar.

Let's add Eastern Promises to this short list then.

Yes, let's. Eastern Promises is great, and one of the few films that Cronenberg considered making a sequel to. Vincent Cassel steals every scene he's in.

Vincent Cassel does that in most of the movies he's in.

And yet interestingly, a project with him as the vehicle such as Mesrine left me rather bored.

From 2006? It's an interesting concept with an okay execution. The script screams self-indulgence and the film feels like an exercise in seeking validation of Sean Ellis's (writer/director) "profound thoughts." It comes across as a film student's first real picture (because it is).

That said, it's an alright flick for a Sunday afternoon. There's some great imagery and the concept is a fun one to play with. It's an easy watch, but rather forgettable.
