Main series, written by Frank Herbert, is
Dune
Dune Messiah
Children of Dune
God Emperor of Dune
Heretics of Dune
Chapterhouse: Dune

Most readers stop after God Emperor as that's basically the full, main story. Things apparently get pretty wild and weird in the last two books. There are a bunch of other extra books by the son, Brian Herbert. These include prequels, sequels, and books that fit in between those in the main series. However, many people (including myself) agree that Brian's writing simply sucks. The main series by Frank is where it's at.

Villeneuve wants to do three films that encompass the first two books, Dune and Dune Messiah. Going off the pacing of the first film, I imagine the sequel will just be more from the first book. The third film will likely combine the rest of Dune and the entirety of Messiah (which is a lot shorter than the first book).

The first 4 are the ones to read, and are glorious. The rest are average to poor.

The Best

Body Heat
Chinatown
Night Moves

^^I can't describe how much I loved these movies

The Great

The Long Goodbye
Manhunter
The Killing of a Chinese Bookie

The Good

Blood Simple
The Hit Man

The Average

Cutters Way
Mona Lisa

Still have quite a few more to go, sure am enjoying watching all these and will be sad when it’s over.
You need to make sure that L.A. Confidential is on your watch list, even if it isn't on Criterion. I'm certain that you will add it to your top category. It's one of my all-time favorite movies.

ETA: It's currently streaming at no charge on IMDB TV.

I saw Lynch's Dune in theaters and the only two things I remember were Sting was in it and I had no idea what was going on. I've never read the book but maybe I will track it down and re-watch to see if the adult me can follow along better.

This is exactly me. Glad to hear the movie is solid.

Just watched Dude Bro Party Massacre 3. It’s on Amazon, and one of the funnier things I’ve watched recently.

Hard to see how they could top the first 2 Dude Bro Party Massacres.

Finally saw California Split first time in a while i gave a film undivided attention

gould carried the movie but segal was perfectly cast as well, there seemed to be a lack of purpose but loved all the meaningless details that ended up not being chekov guns as it added an air of authenticity rarely found in film

didn't understand the ending but perhaps that was the point of degenerate lifestyle

Spoiler:
i'm thinking the woman who bet on 7 reminded him of his old life so he decided to go back before it was all over and he ended up just like his friend

The French Dispatch was pointless. There is nothing connecting the three stories. Worse still, the stories themselves are barely coherent and have nothing to say. The first one was decent but by the third I was dozing off. Pure style, no substance, and we've seen the style plenty of times before in Wes Anderson's other films.

One more thing - Timothee Chalamet sucks. He was bland in Call Me By Your Name, bland in Dune and his blandness sticks out like a sore thumb among the heavily stylised Wes Anderson directed performances. Everyone else can hack it except Timothee. People praise his performances as appropriate for his naif roles; no, that's just his boyish face and physique. He has no screen presence or charisma.

Maybe if it's the first Wes Anderson film you've ever seen, you'll be more impressed by the rhythm of the dialogue and editing, the stylised performances, the wry sense of humour. But other than the shifts between B&W and colour, we've seen it all before in the service of much stronger stories.

I don't necessarily mind an anthology film (Holy Motors is great, Tale of Tales is pretty good) where the individual stories are reasonably coherent and thematically substantive. The French Dispatch though is an exercise in self-indulgence.

Really liked Ad Astra. Mysterious, visually stunning, sometimes thrilling, thoughtful. Everything 'highbrow' sci-fi should be. Great performance from Brad Pitt.

Ad Astra confirmed terrible. "I'll just hang onto the side of this rocket and climb in during ascent," among much other foolishness.

The Worst Person in the World (Joachim Trier, 2021)

Lots of things about this to potentially really dislike for me, from the structure to some »quirky» elements. But the actors and the writing of key emotional scenes are just so good. Many beautiful scenes both dialogue wise and visually. Just overall a lovely, well-observed movie. Reinsve won best actress in Cannes, and she is great, but also Danielsen Lie once again really shines. Highly recommend catching this if it gets distribution in US. Also recommend watching his two previous «Oslo» movies, Reprise and Oslo, August 31st.
