Sound of Metal has a great performance from Riz Ahmed. Apart from that, it was a little formulaic and humdrum. Nothing happened that took me by surprise in the least. Goes to show that a worthy subject matter does not a great movie make. I was hoping for more given the glowing reviews.

Based on thread comments, watched Man from Nowhere (hulu) Korean one-man revenge-based killing spree genre. Nice fights and action. The villains were really nasty and had real dialogue which makes for a better movie. It kind of lost a little plot credibility when 15 mins. in, the bad guys kill one of their own thugs for no particular reason that I could see.

Also Korean Secret Sunshine (Criterion) , character study of a women experiencing profound grief and the different ways she tries to cope with it. Worth watching and well acted. Takes a while for the movie to get going. It reminded me of the masterpiece Three Colors: Blue (1993) but not up to that level. The lead character seemed detached and a little cold from the start so it was hard to like her. The best scene might when when she visits the prison.

I've seen Korean The Housemaid (1960 film) , a one of kind classic that every film buff should see, as well as the The Handmaiden (2016) very well done but totally different. Got me confused on which one was being mentioned.

Yeah,Sound of Metal was a very good, quiet (no irony intended) film but needed some explicit tension. Sometimes filmmakers who are afraid of being called melodramatic, scale back the drama too much.

Somehow had never heard of Burning, but started it last night after the rec itt. Still have an hour left and can’t stop thinking about it.

Burning is terrific. I haven't heard much talk about it, but I loved Bi Gan's Long Day's Journey Into Night.

Just watched The Personal History of David Copperfield. Fantastic cast and an inventive and fun version of the Dickens' novel. Armando Iannucci's follow up to The Death of Stalin makes me want to see even more from him.

no, the dumbest thing was the Raiders Of the Lost Arc booby-trap gauntlet of darts and guns and walls that squish IN A FREAKING CASINO VAULT.

this movie was worse than Justice League.

Lol, and why didn't the casino owner just give them the combination to the safe to begin with?

Why is that guy's daughter risking everyone's lives to save some random woman that is almost certainly already dead/zombified?

And that guy at the end just walks away from a nuclear blast zone no problem?

There was so much stupid going on, it was honestly hard to keep up with it all. I'm all for mindless entertainment, but that movie was just insulting.

Goddamn, terrific it was. Been too long since a film has made me think quite like this one did. Will stay in my head for awhile I imagine.

Not sure if anyone is interested in short films but I found this one to be quite good.

For Korean films, I prefer

Sympathy for Mr Vengeance over Oldboy

3 Iron over Spring Summer Autumn Winter... and Spring

Couple of ones that I haven't seen mentioned.

New World Korean movie inspired by Infernal Affairs. Much preferred over The Departed as its not a plot wise direct copy.

Chingu "Friend. Gangland style Stand By Me.

Castaway on the Moon romantic comedy between social outcasts.

You are thinking of My Sassy Girl and yes it's wonderful.

In the same vein of B movie comedies, the first My Wife is a Gangster is very entertaining.

If you liked Cho yeo-Jeong in Parasite, she is truly a vision in The Servant. A flawed movie but I have rarely seen a movie that attempts to blend comedy, eroticism, and profound sadness.

4: OUTIH - takes multiple viewings, at least for me

5. Opening scene in Inglorious

6: Jackie Brown/Reservoir Dogs (less polished but still good)

7/8/9/etc: Hateful 8/Django/rest of IB (I believe these years are when his coke habit was at an all time high - unhealthy obsession with racism and an extended dip in directorial ability)
This feels pretty much there or thereabouts. I really enjoyed OUATIH at the cinema and I'm looking forward to watching it again.

I agree with most of your choices except for Hateful 8 which was amazing for Jennifer Jason Leigh alone. My top 3. Django was easily the worst of those that you mentioned.

Just saw my first movie in a theater since The Gentlemen in 2/20.

A Quiet Place 2. Not as good as the first one but still decently entertaining. Was great to be at the movies again.

Sleepless Night (2011) French action film that's mostly set in what must be the world's largest, most comprehensive nightclub. There's a dance floor, multiple bars, fine dining, a casino and pool tables all under one roof. Incredibly kinetic movie that barely takes a breath. Neither the camera nor the actors ever stop moving. Thrilling stuff. The Hollywood remake is apparently crap.

I should probably watch H8 again actually, just saw it once. You’re absolutely right, JLL was spectacular

Cruella

7/10

Love Emma Stone and she does another great job. Refreshing and creative backstory film. CGI not great at times. Some other minor gripes but overall was entertaining.

There is a post credit scene as a fyi
