I've seen it twice. When it came out and a few months ago on TV. I thought it was a masterpiece both times. Almost Austenonian in its capture of the manners of its time.

I wonder what Dom didn't like about it the first time?

Vote for Pedro!

Watched this recently with my teenage kids and it wasn't nearly as good as I had remembered.

Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

Criterion Channel has some terrific films now. I watched Dina, a documentary about an autistic woman about to marry a man with Asperger's. It's a touching film that plays a bit like a fiction film. Highlights were the montage sequence set to Yaz's "Only You," the male stripper at the bachelorette party, and the sublime yet heartbreaking ending.

I think it's just one of those movies you have to be in the right mood

Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

What Happened Was . . . On Criterion, directed and written by Tom Noonan is a pretty painful watch, especially for me, since more and more these days I feel a bit like both characters. I don't always know how to act.

Noonan played Dollarhyde in Manhunter, and he, along with Karen Sillas, are the only actors in a film about a rather terrible first date. This is the second film of Noonan's I've seen. He should have directed more.

Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

I watched Napolean Dynamite before it became a meme movie. I remember feeling very sad for the main character, and everyone around him really. I thought it was going to be a comedy. After the internet watched it and all the memes came out, I revisited and laughed a lot more.

Gotta say I'm kinda surprised you hadn't heard of this one Dom. I haven't seen in many years but it's really good from memory Attenborough is nicely chilling as Christie, definitely worth checking out.

Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

Spontaneous, Brian Duffield, 2020

Best movie I've seen this year. Kids in a high school in NJ start spontaneously exploding while one girl and boy fall in love in spite of the chaos. Katheryn Langford and Charlie Plummer are the kids, and they are spectacular. The metaphor the movie is going for is kind of obvious, but still moving and frustrating just the same.

This is Duffield's first directing effort, and he wrote the almost-as-good Love and Monsters from a couple of years ago. This is a filmmaker to watch.

Seriously great movie.

Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

Watched Claire Denis's Let the Sunshine In again last night on Criterion. How and why do women, in this case Juliette Binoche's character, consistently choose men ill-suited for them as partners?

Oh, perhaps this isn't what the film really asks, but it's what I see. In a way, it's a romantic comedy, and the ending with Binoche turning to a fortune teller, played by Gerard Depardieu, is a twenty or so minute "counseling" session. One of my favorite films these past few years.

Perhaps I'm inordinately attracted to Juliette Binoche, so that needs to figure into my review.

GREAT MOVIE! Blown away by this one. Believe this movie got buried/delayed. A shame because it's fantastic. I love the shifts between comedy and melodrama. He handled it with great precision.

I usually like everything that you guys do, but not this one. "Blown away" was a nice one though. Carry on.
