You will love Spring, Sum... Karamazonk, as it pertains strongly to suffering, the material world and other Buddhism themes. The Man from Nowhere is aesthetically excellent and an amazing revenge flick, but strictly for the form.
Ooh, SSFW definitely sounds like my jam. I've already placed requests for both films and will hopefully watch them soon. Btw, dub, I'm 1.5 seasons through The Leftovers, at long last. S1 was pretty good, but S2 has taken the show to another level halfway in, really glad I decided to give this show another chance after I stopped watching two episodes in upon the original airing.

Ha, thanks for noting this. Surely we have impeccable taste.

Reservoir Dogs was an enlightenment for those who watched it in the era when it was released. it was so unlike any other movie at that point in time and it blew our minds, and the same can be said for Pulp and the Kill Bills.

Oh yeah, another Korean goodie is Right Now, Wrong Then. I wouldn't call it a must watch, but I enjoyed it quite a bit.

And, for anyone who ends up checking out The Handmaiden, I recommend going in completely cold and giving it at least an hour..

Agreed. It's definitely an important film and it paved the way for all of the rest. Most people watching all of these films for the first time nowadays would rank it towards the bottom, though, imo.

SSFW is amazing. I need to rewatch it, but I remain somewhat hesitant to put it in front of Old Boy, but SSFW definitely shook me up more than OB
Spoiler:
and the end of the latter is definitely shocking

Nice, I have yet to finish S3 of Leftovers myself (language issues, as we need Spanish subtitles for my gf in order to watch together). Btw, I posted a bunch of recommendations of tv series in the Netflix thread, but La Valla and Caliphate come to mind as must watch.

Saw all three opening week and agree RD was different but didn’t come close to blowing my mind. I did however enjoy the resurrection of ‘Little Green Bag’, a song from my youth.

I don't really get that excited for a new Tarantino anymore. Actually, I was pretty hyped for OUATIH, but that turned out to be a colossal disappointment. Everything he's done since Pulp Fiction has ranged anywhere from meh to good, and I thought Death Proof was actively bad. Or maybe I'm just sorta tired of his shtick, idk.

I'll still keep watching his movies as long as he keeps making them tho.

I don't think I've ever seen a bad Korean movie.

One I don't see mentioned is Poetry. It's unusual and has a different story line, but I highly recommend it.

The Host I love.

Among B movies is Lady Vengeance--basically a first-person shooter, and a rom-com whose name I can never remember where the girl gets drunk and throws up on the boy on the train. Great flick!

The Host is great and the whole Vengeance trilogy is amazing.

While we’re on Chan-wook Park, Thirst is one of the best vampire films of all time.

Was trying to think of a film from the last 10 years or so that blew my mind and A Prophet (2009) was the first one I thought of.

I forgot The Housemaid. The original one is great.

I like Karza’s list too. Jackie Brown would be 5th at bottom of 1st tier for me. Great movie.

I also count True Romance even though he just wrote it. Sure feels like Tarantino. I like it but it’s bottom tier.

Hateful 8 is the only movie I think is bad. Tried to watch several times and can’t get through it. V boring and the N word stuff is usually whatever, but here it’s out of control.

Agree with karazmonk too for the most part

1: just has to be Pulp Fiction

2 and 3: Kill Bill 1 and 2 - these movies are masterpieces imo and were mind blowing when they came out. They are extreme homages and I will never understand criticism of them

4: OUTIH - takes multiple viewings, at least for me

5. Opening scene in Inglorious

6: Jackie Brown/Reservoir Dogs (less polished but still good)

7/8/9/etc: Hateful 8/Django/rest of IB (I believe these years are when his coke habit was at an all time high - unhealthy obsession with racism and an extended dip in directorial ability)

You can tell a lot about a person by where they have Jackie Brown listed on their QT ranking list. It's his best film btw

Riders of Justice - Super badass revenge film starring Mads Mikkelsen. It's so much more than a revenge film. It's all about choices we make, and the consequences/outcomes, whether they're predictable or not. It's a simple premise with deep layers and terrific performances all around. Love every frame of this film. Directed by Anders Thomas Jensen, who also directed Men and Chicken, another great film.

Also have to take into account Sally Menke's death. I don't think any of his newer editors really have the pull (or guts, perhaps) to rein in his indulgent nature. We were already starting to see this tendency from him with Inglourious Basterds, the last film of his that she worked on.

As an aside, the two films that inspired me to pull the trigger on a region free DVD player were Battle Royale and the Japanese cut of Kill Bill Vol. 1.

Booksmart is a less funny, female Superbad. That’s a compliment.

50/50 is cathartic and funny at the same time. It gets a lot of the little stuff right. Must watch if cancer has affected your life.

Grizzly Man is what you get if you cross Steve Irwin with mental illness. It’s not pretty, but a lot of the shots he gets are.

Uncut Gems was one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. The Safdie bros create tension and suspense as well as anyone. Expecting more from them. Respect to Sandler.

Time Bandits (1981) tiny people rampage through time and the universe accompanied by the music of George Harrison. God saves the day at the end for the usual silliness. I think. Fun movie, five midgets out of five.

Mars Attacks (1996) Tim Burton film with lots of big names. The Martians want our planet and Silliness runs rampant. Jack Nicholson gives multiple performances that are simply outstanding. His Vegas big wig persona nails it. Other big names give their all also. Nothing but fun and laughs from beginning to end.

Five exploding Martian heads out of five, includes green blood.

I love this movie. I've probably watched it 20 or 30 times, although not recently.

Army of the Dead A group of oddball specialists join forces to attempt an impossible mission. Wait, haven't I seen that before? I think it probably goes in the movie cliche thread.

I love zombie movies but this isn't one of the better ones. Nothing special, but still a watchable popcorn movie.

Watched Paddington 2 with my granddaughter last night, and then I decided to take a risk and watch The Bridges of Madison County, mostly for the soundtrack (I love Johnny Hartman), but I found the performances by Streep and Eastwood compelling.
