Do you say Kurosawa channels Ford because of the way the wind is always blowing?
I think of Ford because he's the master of Hollywood westerns, but the wind blowing is a powerful metaphor throughout the film. And with Ford, characters redeem themselves or even create new selves when they adhere to the code.

I'm ten minutes into the Coming To America sequel, and I'm quite impressed - it's possibly the worst movie I've seen in 5 years.

CNN played a short doc called Apollo 11 Quarantine over the weekend.

The story was, as soon as the hatch door closed, the astronauts were on a 2-day quarantine just in case they picked up some life form from the moon.

It was pretty terrible. A bunch of several-second clips of old footage spliced together. The only descriptions where "Day X", and occasionally showing location.

No description of context though. There's some workers moving containers (but nothing saying what the containers were). A few seconds of what must've been Armstrong's birthday (he blew out candles on a cake). Blah, blah, blah.

Really disappointed, I thought there might be some actual interesting information.

A New Leaf on Criterion. Fun movie with outstanding performances by Matthau and Elaine May.

I don't get it, i so an artist makes his own version of a movie poster to the point where it serves as a movie poster?

If I were to go collecting this route,I would book a flight to Nigeria asap because that's where the real treasures are to be found

That's not the High and Low we mean. Criterion has the Kurosawa High and Low.

Ray, some libraries also offer Kanopy to card holders. It's free, and it had a great selection, including High and Low.

saw a documentary on utube recently about some Apollo mission, and it included interesting background on Armstrong: a bit of his upbringing/ time in the military etc.. He was basically a total badass

Recently saw a couple of decent comedies:

It's a Disaster (2012: David Cross, America Ferrera, Julia Stiles)- I mainly watched this because of David Cross. Four couples get together at one couple's house for brunch, then there is a man-made disaster in the area and so they are forced together for longer than expected. It was a bit uneven, definitely some funny parts, but a lot of mediocre comedy and half-hearted drama in between those.

Donald Cried (2016): A banker living in Manhattan briefly returns to a small Rhode Island town after the death of his grandmother to attend to her affairs, but loses his wallet on the way, so he's reluctantly forced to ask for help from his old high school friend (Donald). There are both dramatic and comedic elements to their interactions and to the interactions between Donald and others. While it often straddles the line, it never goes over the top, and Donald is a believable character, not an over the top parody... which makes the movie both funnier and sadder imo.

I'd barely recommend the first (but that's better than most movies I've seen recently) and recommend the second (although if you really can't stand crudeness for a purpose, then you probably won't dig it). Two things these movies had in common that stood out:

1) They're comedies, which are far more miss than hit from my experience, so was pleasantly surprised.
2) They show what can be done on low budgets. The first was 98% set in a house (the other 2% was two scenes in front of the house on the sidewalk/street).
The second was shot in two weeks on location in a small town and on a shoestring budget (fate was smiling on them by dumping a bunch of snow, which really helped the setting).

Watched two movies today. First up, Wages of Fear, which, if you haven't seen it, barely gets moving in the first 45 minutes, but watching it again, years later, I found the opening more compelling this time. For those who haven't seen it already, the plot mostly centers on four men driving two trucks loaded with nitroglycerin across nasty South American roads. A great film.

Next, Their Finest. I loved this movie. A woman is hired to write "slop" (the women's roles, mostly) by the British Film Ministry for a WWII propaganda film. It stars Gemma Arterton and the always fabulous Bill Nighy. I'm a huge sucker for Bill Nighy in just about anything, but throw in Richard Grant and Jeremy Irons in small roles, well, how can you not like it?

Bill Nighy is a scream. He steals every scene he is in, whether it's in Pirates of the Caribbean or Emma. I'll look for Their Finest.

Finally watched Phantom Thread.

I think I need to watch it again because I'm not sure what to make of it, quite, but I suspect Ophuls may be one of Anderson's favorite directors. Off to research.

Rocky (1976). Somehow, despite watching Rocky III and IV a million times as a kid and having watched most of the other films, I'd never seen the original. Loved it, and it was a pleasant surprise in that it wasn't what I expected at all. I thought it would have a lot more boxing, a lot more training, a lot more building up of Apollo as this invincible obstacle, etc.. In reality, most of the movie was about two long-suffering and struggling people, Rocky and Adrian (sp?), coming into their own as adults, and the boxing became a beautiful after-thought in the face of the bigger coming of age story, especially in the final moment of the film. Despite one scene that has aged poorly*, this movie is a treasure in almost every other way. From what I understand, the origin story of this movie is amazing too, with struggling actor Sty Stallone writing the screenplay, being offered a nice payday for the rights to the film, then insisting that he be able to play Rocky in the face of possibly no deal.

*
Spoiler:
The end of Rocky and Adrian's first date, when she says with conviction about 30 times that she wants to go home and isn't comfortable and he persists in being aggressive af, including blocking her path to the door
