This looks interesting. Unfortunately, it also appears to be impossible for me to watch right now absent illegal streaming.

Sicario is one of those movies I enjoy just as much (if not more) every time I watch it. Villeneuve is a great man.

To be fair, Maelstrom was quite the miss, if you wanna include all his (non-Hollywood) movies...

I thought Prisoners was super overrated, but it seems I was in the minority

I'm sure the slow paced scenes of life on the space station were amazing in their time, and seeing it on the big screen, but watching it on a normal sized late 1980s television set just doesn't hold the attention.

I liked it, but don't think I got the final scenes.

--------------------------------

Starz or somebody is having a free weekend on Dish, which means they'll generally schedule not-very-good movies. Watched The Gemini Man last night.

Usually like Will Smith, usually like action movies, but I didn't think the story was particularly good. Redemption I guess at the end when his clone becomes a normal college student?

When old Will is talking about his upbringing, he mentions Philadelphia, then says some neighborhood name. I assume that's in South Philly.

I think that must be it. It was cool in theaters and there was a version that was shown on a super-wide curved screen. Plus Blue Danube really worked the better sound systems of the day.

Saw it twice in theaters and many times at home. I'm never bored by 2001 although I have skipped the opening a couple times. In my office (I still have an office, I think) I have a blow up of the instructions for the zero gravity toilet.

Phat, I think it's Zarathustra that challenges speakers. That opening organ note is around 30 hz. I would love to see it and hear it again with today's sound systems.

Dolemite Is My Name Don't see the movie Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. It ruins all future biopics for you. This is a pretty bog standard one, it mostly uses the Walk Hard format but has good performances by Eddie Murphy and the rest of the cast.

Yea, Zarathustra. I saw it in "Cinerama" 70mm with a 6-track sound system. (Had to google it.) It would be fun to see it again, but I don't know if any of the Cinerama screens still exist.

"I want to come over for movie night, but you can't show any movies about grass growing."

How have I developed that kind of reputation?

But I did think, "Hey, Satantango is on Kanopy."

(Other films I remember as being received this way are Big Lebowski and Fight Club -- both achieving cult status. I may be hallucinating, however. (See any of my other posts on 2+2.))

At the time, I remember the problem being Gould. He was thought too Gonzo to be replacing Bogart as Marlowe. I always liked Gould -- I thought his role in Getting Straight was an honest attempt to portray a veteran. Anyway, reviews may have been polarized, but ticket sales were never good and a lot of filmies hated it.
I just watched this for the first time since it came out. What a masterpiece. It's now #1 on my Altman list. It brings Phillip Marlowe into the 1970s.

The strange thing is, The Long Goodbye is further from me in time now than The Big Sleep was when I first fell in love with it.

P.S. I had completely forgotten that Jim Bouton was in there.

Happiest Season fairly by the numbers holiday movie with an LGBTQ+ twist. A villain named Harper invites her gf home with her for the holidays, but Harper isn't out with her family. It's sometimes funny, sometimes romantic. Worth a watch because it's a deeply intimate look at Clea DuVall's real life experience through this lens. Mary Holland and Dan Levy are hilarious in just the right doses.

Arrival - Loved where they went with it. I believe that time could be something we don’t understand completely so it didn’t seem too out there. Ending had me p close to tears, powerful stuff to think about. Best sci-fi I’ve seen in a bit

I actually shed tears in the theater at the end. The short story, "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang, is great too, and I'm going to teach it this winter for an adult education class I volunteer to teach. I hope to get them to watch Arrival too.

That is similar to the reaction I had when I watched it in the theater.

Tried to watch JoJo Rabbit last night. UHG! I only lasted about 30-40 minutes before I just couldn't take it anymore. About 5 minutes in I paused it to see if Wes Anderson directed it. He didn't. But it felt very Wes Andersonish. I loathe Wes Anderson. It seemed to be a obvious copycat of his abysmal style. Homage or ripoff? Who cares either way it sucks.

Sound of Metal . This just dropped on Prime. It’s about a heavy metal drummer who loses his hearing and tries to cope with it. Riz Ahmed (Night Of) plays the lead role and he is fantastic. It’s a slow paced character film but I enjoyed it. 9/10.
