Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

Last night, flipping through the grid, and on three consecutive channels were:

Groundhog Day
Hoosiers
Slap Shot

Also M*A*S*H came on TCM a bit later.

Occasionally Dish Network does something right (I assume by mistake).

Forgot all about watching Chiefs/Texans.

Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

Another new release, finally on Bluray... Caro Diario (Dear Diary) 1993

This is a beautiful semi-autobiographical light comedy that follows (the Director) Nanni Moretti as he crosses parts of the Italian countryside making entries into his personal diary.

I find these types of films that live between the margins of traditional movie making, quite rewarding and very enjoyable.

Moretti won the Palme d'Or for best director for 1993

Unfortunately TIFF doesn't feel the same this year. I think I saw the only TIFF film I'll see this year tonight at a drive-in screening.

Bruised is Halle Berry's directorial debut where she also stars as a MMA fighter trying to get her career and life back on track after an embarrassing loss. There's 2/3rds of a good movie here but everything after the mandatory beginning of the 3rd act training montage is a mess. 4/10.

I thought the first Rocky, with its meat-locker/raw-egg scenes might have escaped the cliche, but I can't think of another movie that has.

Never travel in the Italian countryside on a Vespa. A Tank, Yes; A Vespa, No.

Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood came on the other night. It had already started, but I caught the remainder.

What a nice movie.

At the very end, they're filming a Mister Rodgers episode. Tom Hanks walks off the set and sits down at the piano. In the background is a monitor on a rolling cart.

What I thought I saw on the monitor was the real Mr. Rodgers, showing the scene they'd just gotten done filming in the movie. I thought that was a nice tribute (if I saw it right).

Watched Spirited Away again tonight, but this time with my ten year old granddaughter. She loved it. As did I once again.

Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

American Factory A documentary about a Chinese company that invests in a defunct GM plant in Ohio and the culture clash that occurs as American workers work in a Chinese run factory in the US.

The main message I got out of it though is how unhappy capitalism makes everyone. The American workers are slaving at a boring job for $12.80/hr (later they get a $2/hr raise before a failed vote to unionize). The Chinese workers and managers have been sent 3000 miles from home to live in a foreign country and can't see their family or friends. The mid level managers are being pressured by upper management to increase productivity and cut costs. The Chinese workers in the factories in China are working 65 hrs a week for pittance and can barely even see their own families. Then at the top is the CEO who says that he himself is unhappy and misses his innocent childhood.

They should've called the movie "Capitalism makes people unhappy." What value does an enterprise add like this to the world? It is ruining everyone's lives, taking up all their time, exhausting them physically and emotionally and the end result is a bunch of car windows. The one scene of happy people is one of the Chinese workers who had his family move to America and he is spending time with them.

Great film but depressing.
