Legend (2015) - Tom Hardy is everyone's favorite actor but he deserves it imo, his characters/accents can be repetitive but he does have a lot of subtleties between his characters that deserve recognition. Playing two brothers (with very different personalities) in this one, he does great, especially as Ronnie. Overall I'd say the movie is decent, another rise-and-fall crime movie, pretty formulaic and not much original here. The real Kray twins were complete psychopaths, would have been more interesting as a darker/realistic movie imo. Anyways, worth a watch if you're a TH fan

American Honey (2016) - I think this movie is prob catnip for a specific (younger) audience, nonetheless it's definitely good, Shia plays another troubled - yet - ridiculously charismatic dude...overall it felt like it was trying too hard for me I think, but also worth a watch.

Casino Royale (2006) - I remember this being a LOT better. The poker scenes are unwatchable for me. Daniel Craig is no doubt a great Bond, however, and I like that they went in a darker direction (I wish they would have gone further).

The Invitation (2015) - Sigh, just another meh horror movie

It's a weird world when the elitist literati can get worked up over a pulp novel about a bunch of space cowboys riding around on worms. So, we've come to this. I think all films involving worms should have mandatory cameos by Reba McEntire AND Rocky & Bullwinkle. But no one listens to me. At any rate, I have a feeling that I'm going to love this new one.

As noted elsewhere in this thread, I liked the 1984 version too. Saw it when it came out. As I was leaving the theater, I noticed my wife frowning and shaking her head, so I knew it was as good as I thought. Also liked the recent documentary on Jodorowsky's attempts to film it, which I'll prolly rewatch as a tune-up for this next go at it.

See You, Space Cowboy

Looking forward to watching I'm Thinking of Ending Things soon.

Watched The Tree of Life the other night and, while I liked it and some parts of it were amazing (especially some of the visuals), I honestly was a tad disappointed given I had sky high expectations going in. It just seemed to me like it was trying to do a little too much in too little time and needed to curtail its ambition a little bit or approach what it was trying to do a little differently. To repeat, though, I liked it and many aspects of it were great.

Rewatched Samsara for the third or fourth time the other night. I could watch this and Baraka many more times when in the right mood. These movies aren't for everyone but I feel like they're the kind of movies you either love or turn off after five minutes.

Also, since it got mentioned recently, I second/third/whatever anyone recommending Jorodowsky's Dune, one of the best movies I've watched the last few years (also one of the best trailers).

Watched Burning last night. It's a movie based on a Murakami short story and shot by a famous Korean director (although I've never seen one his films) and lived up to my expectations. Superb story and acting.

I enjoyed the conversation in here from the beginning of this year. I'm in the camp which found it mostly unambiguous.

Search on twitter/youtube. It gets posted then gets copyright stuck by WB and removed. Then it gets posted again and the cycle repeats. I'll PM you a link but no guarantees it will still be active by the time you click it. Endless legions of Chalamet fans guarantee there will always be active links tho.

Victor Hugo's (les misérables, the hunchback of notre-dame) The Man who Laughs

A fantastic Social/class distinction narrative by one of the greats... The influence on the Joker character is unmistakable.

Despite being a relatively early silent film, there are a number of really great shots in the film... specifically those involving Duchess Josiana character, her eyes are memorizing.

Unlike the book,
Spoiler:
everyone lives happily ever after...
I think I would have preferred the original book ending.

Heh, that sounds like a thumbs down then.

D1iab, have you been on board with Kaufman's other movies would you say? I think it's a decidedly mixed bag, some great ones and some misses. And by that I include the ones he just wrote and didn't direct btw.

Some of these early silents had the photography mastered to a degree that wouldn't be mastered by the talkies for years. I think speech may have been too easy a gimmick that it lulled them to laziness.

Sometimes life is too good to be true. They've got legions of fans desperate to promote their flick and they're fighting tooth and nail to stop them. They are either idiots of geniuses. Sometime it can be hard to tell which is which in the film trade.

Wow, agreed, I have no familiarity with any of this but those images are very powerful and entrancing. Might have to check it out.

I am in complete agreement with this ^... it is VERY easy to see the influence on the later directors up to and into these modern/current times.

The character, as written, doesn't have any direct linear tie to 'joker' beyond the visual influence and perhaps the class distinction influence, but it's been well documented that this is the earliest reference to the DC character.

This film plays out in a time close to the period in which it was written, so the social dogmas and class distinctions are of that particular period... and of course there are 'gags' based on the naivete that come along with a film made in the beginning period... but in broad strokes the writing and character development are outstanding and for me the only drawback is as I stated above, I would have liked better to see the original books end where

I haven't seen everything of his, but I would say I've been mostly on board with his other stuff, to varying degrees. But here he just went full Kaufman, and you never go full Kaufman.

biggerwife was out of town so I watched a few movies

While she was out of town, she watched this one so she recommended it to me. The Peanut Butter Falcon. A boy with Down syndrome runs away from the retirement home he is assigned to and meets up with a down-on-his-luck crab fisherman. Kind of a schmarmy cute little indie film. Nothing groundbreaking here. Just a standard feel good movie and a bit (well more than a bit) contrived but worth a watch.

Because she doesn't like horror I took the opportunity to take in a couple. The first was The Babysitter. A nerdy boy learns his babysitter isn't what she seems. Oh my! I love this kind of campy horror. There's a lot better out there but I enjoyed it anyway.

Then I watched The Platform. A multi-story prison has a platform that starts at the top with a feast of food and works it's way down. The higher levels get all the food they want, but by the time it gets down to the lower levels, there is no food left. Lots of gore but it really wasn't about that. It was to illustrate a lot of issues with society. Super interesting concept but I think they could have done a little better with it. Would recommend.

Diversity is important and I think it should be encouraged, but, at least when it comes to who can be in the movie, that's just downright scary. When you're telling people who and what must be in their movie, there's more than a bit of (ironic) fascism. I tend to lean left fwiw but am one of those people who think the "safe space" mentality in an environment like a college campus is dangerous af. I don't want to politicize the thread but things like this bother me as they are a legitimate threat to authentic creative expression.

You can still make an all white all male movie for your "authentic creative expression," it just won't be eligible for an Oscar.
Talk About Movies: Part 4 Quote
09-09-2020 , 08:56 AM
They only have to meet two of the standards to be eligible for the Oscar. That means they can ignore anything relating to what we see on screen or even what happens on set.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the ‘progressives’ pick up on that loophole and demand the on-screen standard become mandatory.
