by random luck, I caught Enemy (2013) - Denis Villeneuve/Jake Gyllenhaal for the first time recently. Was weird but I enjoyed it. Don't ask me to explain the final shot tho, I have no idea.

it's a lesser known film but I would guess one probably would like it if they like the director's & lead actor's other work.

What's the best book for the general reader about how good movies achieve storytelling? Does this question even make sense?

Am I the only one that watched Indiana Jones Temple Of Doom and thought the most ridiculous part of the airplane scene was not them surviving the crash by jumping out of the plane using an inflatable raft. No the more crazy part of the scene was the idea that someone was airfreighting live poultry out of Shanghai across the Himalayas in the 1930s? Even today who air freights live poultry?

Even the guy ripping people’s hearts out people in or a country known for vegetarians sitting around eating live snakes and monkey brains is more logical than air freighting poultry.

Oh yeah throw in a pallet of watermelons to airfreight.

I can't watch that film... I don't even think that's the most ridiculous scene or idea.

The Way Back was a nice character study. Ben Affleck may have the performance of the year so far....he does a helluva job.

Tenet I couldn’t understand half of the movie. It ruined it for me. Music was too loud and the accents were too thick.

I was avoiding it cuz figured it would be standard cliche filled following the formula flick is it not?

Hard to pardon: why Tenet's muffled dialogue is a very modern problem

Quote:
In Nolan’s case, Price and Bochar are confident that the director does it intentionally. In a 2019 Reddit AMA, sound designer Richard King – who has worked with Nolan on seven films, including Tenet – said: “He wants to grab the audience by the lapels and pull them toward the screen, and not allow the watching of his films to be a passive experience.”

It’s hard to imagine that Nolan is unaware of the criticism. Price suspects the director wants to make the audience work harder to understand the dialogue; he thinks Nolan believes this will make the film a more immersive, engaging experience. But, Price says, “I think he is the only one in the world who believes that.”

Christopher Nolan’s Use of Sound on ‘Tenet’ Infuriates Some, Inspires Others

Quote:
Peter Albrechtsen, a sound designer who worked on “Dunkirk,” disagrees. Nolan tries to ensure that “every cinema is playing the film exactly as he wants it,” he claims. “And that’s why he’s still mixing sound in 5.1, even though we now have Atmos, because that’s the format most cinemas have.”

In Albrechtsen’s opinion, “Tenet” is “a spectacular movie.” He likens it to a “James Bond movie on steroids.”

The way Nolan uses sound is “very visceral,” he says. “It is a physical experience.” He adds: “It’s a very intense sonic experience, and I can see why, for some, that’s quite overwhelming. The environments in his film are very vibrant,” and their complex sound design helps create that, he says.

Although he concedes that “small dialogue details” may be difficult to catch as a consequence, he likes the fact that everything isn’t “served up on a plate” for the viewer. “You have to be on your toes to really get all the details,” he says.

The Way Back is not really a basketball movie, it's a movie about a man dealing with unimaginable grief.

Did you like Warrior? It has all the cliches that movie does, but is nowhere near as good.

Still watchable.

Well, seeing as we have very similar tastes, and I drafted it in the 2010s draft...probably?

Also, Tom Hardy.

Nick Nolte also fantastic in it. I've seen it probably a dozen times or so.

Those are stupid responses. There is no need for a lot of background noise when you are listening to characters discuss important plot details in a complex movie. The way the actors mumbled, had accents with mumbling, and talked fast all seemed intentional. It’s throwing bullshit against the wall and claiming “art”. Honestly, it was one of the worst movie experiences I’ve ever had and I’ve been a Nolan fan.

Caught the end of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and watched through the credits.

Noticed that someone named Cy Young was credited as "Radio Telescope Team". Not sure who he was, no picture on imdb.

Odd coincidence with Tom Seaver's recent passing.

I have enlightened your nephews concerning my plan..
MYYYYY PLAN!!
....the plan.

Lots of people hated the 1984 version of Dune, and it was disowned by Lynch. It's imperfect for sure, but there's a lot to enjoy for the willing.

The teaser for Villeneuve's 2020 version is out and playing with Tenet. You can also find a crappy phone-recorded-in-the-theatre version on twitter. The full trailer is coming on the 9th. Very much looking forward to this, both because Villeneuve can do no wrong and because it's a passion project for him and he actively cares about the source material. The cast is elite. Villeneuve has a full budget and is a producer. There are no obvious idiots involved like JJ Abrams / David Goyer / Zack Snyder / etc to ruin things. It's a Legendary / Villeneuve / WB production. Music is Hans Zimmer (like every other movie made these days). Editor is Joe Walker, who has already worked with Villeneuve on Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, and Sicario. Not really sold on Greig Fraser for cinematographer but he was nominated for Lion in 2017 and Zero Dark Thirty before that. Production design is Patrice Vermette who is another longtime Villeneuve associate (Arrival, Sicario, Prisoners).

Cautiously optimistic on this one. Pretty excited to see the full trailer in a few days. This version is only the first part of the book (most likely ending right around when Paul & Jessica join the Fremen), and a second film is dependent on how this one performs.

The elitist literary friends I have are convinced based on the costumes and principal photography that came out earlier this year that the film will not live up to expectations and is a disservice to the book. They are very snobby in this regard imo but still represent a noticeable chunk of Dune fans imo.

The film “Sunshine “was based on the premise that the Sun was going to stop shining and a group of people had got to undertake a difficult mission in order to restart it.

A Amazon films reviewer had this to say:-

“I have a serious problem with this movie, at no point does anyone look serious and say “It’s Daylight Saving Time” , what were the writers thinking?”

I loved Sunshine. I loved pretty much everything that Alex Garland touched and teaming up with Danny Boyle is just dazzling af
