I saw it as a kid, too. But not in a theater -- they showed it at my elementary school for some reason. Not many movies are weird enough for me, but many try to be. This one is effortlessly* weird enough.

ok i'm sold on dr t

btw have a question about history boys

why is it considered a good film

why aren't the pedophilia overtones a bigger deal, they never really justify nor explain - this always bothered me, not even the wiki really mentions it much

Watched Uncut Gems. Man o man. It's definitely an assault on the senses. My anxiety level shot up considerably. Good movie, though. Sandler was great.

After that we were emotionally drained so we decided to see if we could find some silly mindless nonsense to watch, so we checked out The Wrong Missy. Checked all the boxes of silly mindless nonsense. Fun, though. Spade playing the straight man was unexpected. The movie was basically a showcase for Lauren Lapkus who did an admirable job.

Rewatched Tree of Life and it’s really special. Feels like a meditation on nature and life as much as a movie. Malik has an eye for beauty and significance of all kinds, both in the world and through the lens. Religion is a bigger part than I remember, but it’s more of a general spirituality than anything too preachy. Im already sold on Pitt being top tier, but what Chastain does here w/ only several lines is impressive. I get why it’s not for everyone, but it really pushed the boundaries of movies in the best way.

I've always loved this movie, but assumed that you had to be from Texas to get it. I pretty much love everything Chastain does.

Thin Red Line is an abomination of war cliches, only saved by John Travolta rocking a pencil-thin mustache. My predicted revolution in manly tonsorial fashion failed to materialize, however.

Tenet - I have little idea what was going on. I tried not to think too hard about the timey-wimey stuff and just enjoy the ride, but that's difficult to do when every set piece is incoherent unless you actively try to make sense of the events. And that's pretty hard to do at the pace everything flies by. Comprehension is further hindered by bad sound mixing. It's not easy to hear dialogue when there's loud music or crashing waves in the background.

Nolan's sound mixing is intentional. He does this on purpose. He's spoken about it before, here are some of his comments in response to the Interstellar complaints.

Here's a solid reddit thread (well, as solid as a reddit thread can be) on this topic. Lots of frustration from people who point out that Nolan's films tend to require heavy exposition via dialogue, while making the dialogue all but incomprehensible via sound mixing choices and refusal to use ADR.

Mandatory to include this link on any discussion of Nolan sound.

that one line he delivers to Sean Penn's character is heartbreaking... something like, "every time we meet again, it's like we have to start from the beginning."

like a formality/ need to familiarize/ reacquaint that shouldn't really be present for friends and family

lol we had a pretty in depth discussion of thin red line here a couple months back

finish richard jewell, film had no ending at all, incredibly disapointed his arc was learning to answer a question not incredibly meekly

watched jojo rabbit - best movie i've seen in years imo

Interesting comments in that Reddit thread. It made me think about an odd incongruity with Nolan's films. He's deservedly known for some spectacular visuals, yet he's not so good at using visuals to tell the story. The dialogue in Tenet is 90% exposition, even more than in his other films. A real problem when you're struggling to hear the words and aren't given much time to process anything.

I still think Nolan is awesome...Memento and The Prestige are great films, and his others are merely good.

I think I might've, too. getting old/ memory bad.

that opening scene with the sound swell and that alligator entering the water, then in a split-second being fully submerged and not hardly leaving a ripple.

mother nature stealth technology, baby.

I watched a couple of Bruce Brown documentaries yesterday for the first time in ~50 years: Endless Summer and On Any Sunday. It's hard t understand how influential they were in their time, give how ubiquitous surfing and motorcycles have become. Does anybody still watch these?

I've met and worked with both Bruce Brown and Warren Miller... from the Garment industry perspective.

The original Art by John Van Hamersveld was very influential at the time... I have several of his pieces from my time working with them back in the early 1980's as BB's films began a resurgence.

Easy to make the comparison between it and Inception, it is definitely Tenet's closest relative. Very similar style and tone, and similar ingenuity and vision from Nolan.

Spoiler:
As I was watching I kind of thought the whole time inversion concept was similar to the method in which he told the story in Memento, but he took that method and made it into a plot

The complaints around the audio, I would call valid. It is pretty hard to hear the Protagonist and several other soft-spoken/accented characters when the score is pounding (it is not Zimmer this time, but it is incredibly Zimmer-esque). Also John David Washington speaks very quickly so it can be tough to digest in a few scenes and purposefully adds to the confusion.

Other than that it was great fun and what you would come to expect from Nolan. I'd probably call Inception a bit better though.

8/10

Watched Spotlight again last night. Superb storytelling, and it serves as a reminder how important the press is to a democracy.
