yes, its a realistic reenactment of American army vs Taliban Battle of Kamdesh in 2009 . Frightening to watch from beginning to end. One of the soldiers that participated in the actual battle plays himself in the movie along with all those actor progeny mentioned earlier. (No rap music here but some other music and even some dancing.)

^ ^ Rockwell has been one of my favorite actors forever, I like seeing him get his due. For a somewhat under-the-radar top-5 Rockwell performance (as well as one of my favorite sci-fi movies ever) check out Moon.

Donnie Brasco - Somehow had never seen it. I thought it was pretty good. I forgot how good Depp can be, and the flawed characters play off each other well despite all being well-trodden mafia stereotypes. The score annoyed me for some reason.

Speaking of Sam Rockwell:

I first became a fan of Rockwell when he played a red shirt character in the best Star Trek movie of all time.

I loved The Invisible Man. Moss is just astounding. Very original take that is well-executed. This film is not what you're expecting, and that's a good thing.

Yeh my wife and I both liked that a lot. And I’m not a horror guy. Cool idea and few better actresses for the role than Moss. Probably relatively cheap to make too.

I agree Moon was great and opened my eyes to the potential of sci-fi.

Arizona Dream now on Criterion. Dom mentioned this a few years ago. I've only seen Kusturica's Underground, which is terrific.

I lasted 9 minutes before turning it off

omg I can't wait to see that again...it's been at least 20 years. Love to know what you think about it, too, John.

I fell asleep about half way through last night but yeah, the concept is really great. The marine soldier bugs me though so I am not sure how I will like the rest of the movie. Charlize Theron is so damn good looking.

I haven't seen it since the 90s, but it may be the perfect movie for these lunatic times.

Arizona Dream is a shaggy dog of a movie...Kusterica's first English language movie and he goes for magic realism that doesn't always work. It's not a good movie, per se, but it is a memorable and entertaining movie.

I see that the original release was shorter and cut by the studio, but the restored version is almost two hours long...I wonder which I saw back in the day? Going to watch it this week.

Johnny Depp
Faye Dunaway
Michael J. Pollard
Lili Taylor
Paulina Porizcova
Vincent Gallo

And oh yeah, Jerry Lewis!

And a flying fish. And eskimos!

I think Uncut Gems might be a good movie. I've only watched part of it. It causes me to feel such anxiety that I have to stop watching it. I've done that twice and I'll try to finish it eventually but I can't remember a movie making me feel this way. Good Time is an example but I don't recall it making me feel so nervous like this one does.

I sometimes feel this way when watching movies that portray strung-out-gambler-psycho-girlfriends. I'm not sure why. But if Uncut Gems had, say, Mila Kunis playing Howard, I might have had to leave the theater.

Yup, I agree with this assessment : went back to watch it a decade ago because Kusturica and Depp, what could go wrong, right!?! My high expectations were not met, but still a decent viewing.

Instinct tells me the directors would consider your visceral reaction to be a compliment.

It's worth it simply for Gallo's amazing North By Northwest performance.

Watched Day of the Outlaw (1959) mentioned in another thread as Western noir in the Criterion Collection. Worth watching for different sections but the messy overall plot which starts out as cattleman versus farmers changes tropes several times as Burl Ives tries to keep his command over his six violent thugs carrying stolen gold. Robert Ryan plays mean anti-hero cattleman Blaise. Some standout scenes include a Robert Ryan speech, a wicked Saturday night dance party, and finally tops off with a must see 30 minute suicidal horseback trek in the mountain snow. Women and horses are not treated well in this movie.Grade B.

Just watched The Best Years of Our Lives which won 8 or 9 Oscars including Best Picture in 1946. For some reason I had never seen it before but had always been on my to see list. It's long at almost 3 hours but very well done and entertaining. 3 guys get home from WWII and readjust to civilian life and all of the trials and tribulations of that transformation. This is an important story that has been more or less forgotten in these modern times of history erasing.

So I sat down to watch Arizona Dream on Criterion tonight, and realized that it was the 119 minute travesty of a cut that is the only released version in America...so, after some sleuthing, I found that a kind soul has uploaded a 135 minute version to Youtube (the original was 142 minutes). So I'm watching that...

If you want to see the movie, you should, too.

One scene that you're missing if you watch the cut-down version is Vincent Gallo going to a movie theater with Depp to watch Raging Bull, and Gallo gets up on stage during the "did you fu*k my wife" scene and performs both the DeNiro part and the Pesci part in front of the screen.

I mean, why would anyone cut that out of the film??

Cul-de-sac summer movies went on last night. We eventually landed on Jaws for a first-time experience for some.

There's a public health crisis where people are being killed in previously unseen numbers. The head of government downplays the problem, ignores the experts, and attempts to keep the economy open despite the deaths. Eventually the good guys succeed in stopping the problem despite government.

I'm glad this kind of stuff only happens in the movies.
