Anybody ever see The Music of Chance? Written by Paul Auster and starring Mandy Patinkin and James Spader, it's a strange gambling movie.

I read the book (a solid uncanny read). Is the movie good?

The movie is quite good. Also stars Joel Gray, Charles Durning, and M. Emmet Walsh.

I liked Intacto, but is it really a gambling movie... It seemed more like a dark fantasy movie to me... It's been a while though, last time I saw it was in the theatres 19 years ago. In that vein, I don't really include Casino as a gambling movie, but if yes, it has to be the top gambling movie.

Does easy money count as a gambling movie?

Thank you for embedding those videos. My wife and I just spent the last hour watching the Splash & BTTF videos while drinking our morning coffee. In fact, we enjoyed them so much that we made donations to both of the charities for which these videos were produced as fundraisers.

I'm not a big Goonies or LOTR fan, but we're looking forward to watching the Ghostbusters video tomorrow morning.

Just finished rewatching Tarkovsky's Solaris, and I had forgotten so much about it. The print on Criterion is beautiful, and after Stalker, it's my favorite of his films. There's something about films that deal with the big questions, love, loss, memory, and desire, that I cherish.

Now I want to watch the remake again.

Josh Gad is like nails on a chalkboard to me, but the ghostbusters and splash ones were great.

I'm trying to think of movies where I liked the remake as much as the original, but for different reasons. I'm having a hard time coming up with many.

I need to order some Criterion collection movies. You all, Give me a list of Your favorite ten as a basis, and I’ll make a selection and place an order. Thanks.

Most of the examples that come to mind for me, were Hollywood remakes of foreign cinema that turned out almost as good/at times better.

12 Monkeys
Vanilla Sky
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

True Grit would be on my list.

And Casino Royale.

And Return of The Pink Panther.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
I would disagree on this one.

Fair enough. I love Trent Reznor's soundtrack, Finch's direction. I fathom people might feel similarly about Vanilla Sky, albeit I found it stylistically different then Abre los Ojos and both solid.

I thought Point of No Return was a good remake of La Femme Nikita.

I definitely agree with True Grit, (mostly for Hailee Steinfeld's performance over Kim Darby), but I'm not sure that I'd consider Casino Royale a remake given that the stories are different and the first one was a complete satire. But if we're going to consider remakes where one movie is serious and one is a comedy, then #1 on the list has to be Airplane! over Zero Hour!

Other remakes on my list that were as good or better than the original would include Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Thing, His Girl Friday, Little Shop of Horrors, and Scarface.
