Exactly, F paywalls.

IT 2 was better than I expected but not great. Was kind of bored at points. I still think part 1 was extremely well done and will hold up.

finally got around to Joker

no clue how this movie was such a phenomenon and grossed >$1B with 11 academy award noms. 31st highest grossing movie of all time? wtf?

the only thing I can come up with is the association to the Batman franchise

take out the Batman angle (either pretend Batman doesn't exist, or pretend the movie was called Clown and the references to Batman were either not made, or solely made within the universe of this one movie and unrelated to the Batman franchise) and what would have happened with this movie? it would have just been treated as a Taxi Driver ripoff/remake, right?

Phoenix had a great performance, sure. But 11 nominations? Is that a joke? Yes, 2019 was a bad year, but it wasn't that bad. This was the least-watched Oscar ceremony of all time so whatever Oscars.

Not to say it was a bad movie or anything like that. I just don't get why it was so popular.

LOL, okay.

Stay safe in your anonymity to the big bad corporations.

You never know who's watching you or is out to get you and your data!

Self righteous condescending diatribe about to begin...

It made a ton of money because the superhero audience and the good movie audience barely overlap. The superhero audience has largely never seen great films like Taxi Driver or King of Comedy. They are like the woman holding a knock off designer purse. They don’t know it’s worse. They see Joker and think “wow” character development, interesting cinematography, acting is centred instead of CGI. These are things they haven’t seen much so it seems new and vital.

They basically sold a knock off designer purse to a bunch of teenage boys and young men.

I am a bit of a scardy cat so haven’t seen many horror films. The guys from my favourite podcast, Reply All, are doing a second one where they try to get a scardy cat like me to appreciate horror.

Next week it’s will be Alien so I decide to watch it for the first time.

Not surprisingly, it’s so good. I can’t believe how awesome it looks for 1979. Practical effects beats CGI any day. I wouldn’t say it was super scary but has it’s moments. The pacing and tension is so well done.

Ha i would never have pegged you for someone who gets scared at movies.

I was thinking about this recently, idk when movies stopped being scary, but now it’s really hard to find something to give me the chills, and I reeeeally love that feeling. I remember not being able to finish Pet Semetary as a kid. Then, hilariously enough, when I was 12 I went in with my friends to see Island of Dr. Moreau in theaters - yes, that one haha - and was so scared I couldn’t even look at the screen. I still don’t know what I found so scary about it.

Now I WISH I could find a movie I find scary, I watch all kinds of horror films and about 1/2 or 3/4 through it all starts to seem silly and fake, I just can’t take any of them seriously. Although, I did find the recent tv show The Outsider scary at times, was very pleasantly surprised.

Awesome that you got to see Alien for the first time. It’s one of my absolute fav films

I've seen it 100 times, and those times when Danny is rippin' around on his Big Wheel, I still worry something else might happen, other than what I know happens lol

Or when he's playing darts and goes to retrieve them from the dartboard ohhh

Kubrick Goat. The film is better than the book - with all the time spent in the basement reading news clippings/ topiary versus hedge maze no contest (no derail)

All the dissections of The Shining that I've seen are total garbage... who even cares to find hidden meaning? The film has its effect on one, leave it alone.

I can remember when I was a little boy. My grandmother and I could hold conversations entirely without ever opening our mouths. She called it shining.

I’m too damn empathetic. It’s funny you mentioned Pet Cemetery. My brother and I snuck into it as kids. I still remember it like yesterday. When the old lady is at the top of the stairs we both looked at each other and knew we wanted to leave. We bolted. I think that very moment set me off horror films.

If I could watch it at 10 years old, at home alone, you can handle it.
I do have a lasting memory of something that happened tho.

I saw it when it came out because I thought it was SciFi. If it had been marketed as pure horror, I probably would have skipped it. I have a low opinion of most horror flick plots, but there are some exceptions.

Clovis, have you seen It Follows or The Witch? Those are two modern horror classics. I think you’d like both, as they don’t rely on gore to get scares.

Lol, Pet Semetary was definitely in my top 3 movies that freaked me out the most when I was a kid. I had nightmares about the "crazy sister" for years. Another one that unsettled me greatly was Poltergeist III.

Have you seen The Descent? Of the horror movies I've watched the last decade, that one probably "scared" me the most. I haven't seen it all and just caught it on tv while bored one night, but I also recall Silent Hill having the same effect despite being a bad movie.
