that plus all movies have some loose ends that dont make full sense. as long as it stays on track and doesnt get stupid it can still be acceptable.

Nope, took it as he trusted the female handler and he was not worried about getting paid because it has likely never been an issue so far.

Also that 12min one shot segment is of the highest quality and worthy of viewing even if you
dont want to watch whole movie.

Since when did you become a nit!

I mean if we’re being honest the Bourne movies require a good amount of belief suspension and I know you feel just as strongly about them as I do ha

lol fair enough.
tho I didn't say it ruined the movie for me I enjoyed the visual aspects quite a bit. it was just such a ridic plot hole and probably bugs me more cuz I've been in the poker world for so long and would laugh in someones face for trying to get me to invest that kind of money and take that much risk without getting the payment guaranteed.

To Have and Have Not "You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow"

The movie felt like a mix of a remake of Casablanca and a vehicle to put Bogie and Bacall together. There were 2 1/2 plot lines and they seemed to be tossed together haphazardly. The romantic plot with the two stars was pretty good but combining it with the storyline of the captain helping he resistance seemed forced. Then they tossed in some musical numbers with Hoagy Carmichael, which were pretty good. I don't know if that was really Bacall singing but, yuk on her number.

Given all that, I really enjoyed it.

The Lady Eve Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda star in the romcom about an on again off again on again romance. I enjoyed it but I honestly don't get the Stanwyck love here. I mean, she's OK but she doesn't do much for me. Maybe because my first exposure to her was The Big Valley.

I've tried to figure this out myself. She puts tiny pauses in her speech that lead me to believe her characters are figuring things out and are way ahead of everyone else. I've read that Stanwyck had a Judy Holliday-level IQ and I believe it. Whatever she's got, she really does it for me.

Maybe it's just her eyes...

Thanks for passing that info on! I love that movie and haven't seen it in a long, long time.

BTW, for anyone who has an AmEx Platinum Card (or anyone considering getting one), AmEx has just added a benefit whereby they'll reimburse up to $20/month through the end of the year for most streaming services, including Prime Video. On a side note, they're also now providing statement credits of $20/month for most wireless phone service contracts.

Watch the whole thing. Perhaps the most realistic poker movie, but from a bygone time.

you can watch 2 anytime, but 3 through Fallout have a narrative through-line for most of them, so you want to watch them in order.

They're all good, except for 2 - but at least that's John Woo and it looks great!

Eliott Gould: positive expected value when directed by Robert Altman.

California Split definitely one of my favourite gambling movies, up there with The Hustler and Owning Mahoney.

The Death of Stalin (2017)

This very dark indeed comedy regarding the power struggle for leadership of the USSR after Stalin got drop kicked into Hell, from one of the most horrible eras in human history really shouldn't work, but it's from Armando Ianucci so it does.

While quite hilarious in parts it doesn't shy away from the Hell on Earth the Soviet Union under Stalin was and it's the only comedy that will give you a sense of dread as well as a laugh, veering between the two pretty seamlessly.

It's also the kinda film you'l either get or dislike, I reckon (with English and American accents abounding and Stalin himself sporting a cockney twang), but it worked for me. Great performances too, particularly from Jason Isaacs in a minor role as Zhukov head of the red army and Simon Russel Beale as the vicious scheming monster Lavrenti Beria. Highly recommended.

comments on some movies in this thread

Zama... seemed remarkably historically accurate in terms of costumes, manners, horrid bureaucracy, treatment of natives, and primitive violence in those times and the setting. As the poor protagonist gets more and more abused it gets hard to keep interest though. Grade B

Extraction- The director spent a lot of effort in making top notch video game-like action sequences that were fun to watch. The sounds of the gunfire and the target hits were thrilling. It did need more effort on the plot, of course. Wouldn't be surprise to see an Extraction 2 in the works, though. Grade B+

Dead Mans Shoes-Low budget film. Modern day British soldier from war seeks revenge on a gang of drug thugs in his small hometown who abused his mentally challenged brother while he was away. Creative killings without much use of firearms. . The gang is so pathetic, sometimes driving around in a tiny colorful car, that its hard to know whether to laugh or be horrified or fell pity as they are attacked. Has a couple of twists at the end. Grade B.

Love all those older movies you guys posted about lately. I will watch Death of Stalin sometime but now I need lighter fare. I watched a bunch of Austrian master director Michael Haneke's movies and, while very well-made. are mostly twisted and depressing to watch. He wants to reveal the wicked side of some people that is hiding under a facade of being well-adjusted. Avoid The Seventh Continent especially.
