Showed my fiancée The Great Beauty.

I can’t ever explain why, but it’s just one of my favorite movies. I am a deeply nostalgic person and this movie captures the emotion perfectly.

I love to think that as he immediately starts to see life & the world in a different light, he no longer has use for BS or frivolous conversation, and in that he sees the real beauty in it.

97/100

Frances Ha Really enjoyed the first half. It was quirky with sharp dialogue and I liked Frances. About the start of the dinner party before her Paris trip it started going downhill and I started disliking Frances. By the end I hated her and the movie.

Watching Ball of Fire on Criterion. Howard Hawks with Billy Wilder screenplay. An all time favorite about a befuddled English professor (aren't they all?) attempting to complete an encyclopedia entry on slang with the help of Barbara Stanwyck.

BS is SMOKING HOT in that movie... that silver dress is to die for. The film is a great piece.

Yeah that's a good one, I don't think I knew Billy Wilder wrote it. Charming as all get out.

Watching Gerwig's Little Women...

Absolutely amazing....I've always loved that story, and I love how this version goes back and forth in time. It somehow makes it "new."

I don't think there is an act of goodness I love more in literature than when Marmee and all the March girls take their Christmas meal, which they have been saving for and longing for, over to the destitute, young single immigrant mother of 4 so that they might have something to eat.

I'm a sucker for stuff like that.

It was my favourite film from last year. I have seen it several times already.

Just watched Fail Safe. Who would have thought that Dom Deluise would be the cool one under pressure.

Now watching Irma Vep. Nothing beats Maggie Cheung's costume in this one.

If you've never seen it, Andrew Lloyd Weber's The Phantom of the Opera is airing on Youtube only until Sunday night....it's a filmed version of the 25th anniversary performance...so it's live on stage, but with multiple cameras. It's pretty spectacular.

Yes, John, a very edifying movie. It made me aware of how interested I am in women's fashion. Is it streaming somewhere?

It's apparently available on MUBI. You can get a free 7-day trial through their website. Or better yet, you can get a free 30-day trial through Amazon if you have Prime.

FS is friggen fantastic. It's probably a function of my advanced age and the product of the era in which I had grown up, but these mid century military movies that centered around atomic power are always amazing and satisfying.

Fail Safe
Seven Days in May
The Bedford Incident

and many more are 'on point' despite being somewhat melodramatic by modern standards. the core of these stories seem not only plausible but likely.
