I read the book two, or maybe even three times before I felt I had a handle on what was going on. At first I assumed that the movie makers had tried to make sense, but had failed. I eventually realized that they hadn't, but had tried to tell a story and succeeded. It seems that certain types of consistencies are necessary for storytelling, but other types don't matter at all.
