I'm a bit of a sucker for movies about chess, and I enjoyed Pawn Sacrifice about the Fischer/Spassky match, especially for its portrayal of Spassky. It's no Searching for Bobby Fischer, but it's worthwhile for those who have no idea how this match brought chess into the national consciousness.

I enjoyed Birdman and The Shape Of Water. All of the rest "best pictures" of the last decade didn't even look interesting enough for me to want to see them.

Spotlight and Argo are both very good.

School's Out (Sebastien Marnier, 2018)

Quote:
Pierre Hoffman joins a prestigious school as a substitute teacher and soon notices, among some of his students, an unjustified hostility and a spark of violence in their eyes.
Great French thriller, sorta Haneke-ish but looser and very entertaining. Laurent Lafitte is terrific in the lead. The music was really good as well. On Amazon Prime.

Those two and a few others I don't remember at all apart from the name; no idea what either are about. Will look them up though.

It was essentially the opposite. Miramax / Weinstein went hard in the paint for Shakespeare in Love.

Searching for Bobby Fischer is not about chess.

You might make the same claim for any number of films.

Interesting take on how it beat out Private Ryan, but doesn't explain how it beat out Galaxy Quest.

Been meaning to watch searching for Bobby Fischer & Cincinnati Kid

Loved the Wes Anderson honest trailer, forgot about them

Recently saw flipped, a delightful coming of age drama that I can't possibly understand how I never heard of it earlier, it's very good

Also watched Carlito's Way again, didn't really hold up for me, which is strange because I used to love that movie. finally looked up the cast, still can't believe that Kleinfeld was played by Sean Penn.

Also finally saw once upon a time in Hollywood, was amazing and loved it

If there is one movie hill I'm willing to die on, it is that Searching for Bobby Fischer is not about chess.

Mostly because when I advise people to watch it and they refuse because they "don't like chess".

But everyone should watch it, if for Conrad Hall's cinematography alone. It was nominated but lost that Oscar to Schindler's List (which Steven Zaillian, the director of SfBF did the screenplay for). Zaillian is a producer on Taylor Sheridan's followup to Wind River -> Those Who Wish Me Dead, which is releasing in October.

Hall had already won for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and later took two more with American Beauty and Road to Perdition. Road to Perdition is a severely underrated movie that I recommend often.

This is what SfBF is about:

I love that ending to Searching for Bobby Fischer.

I also recommend October Sky for another nice film about fathers and sons.

The Rewatchables Podcast has just released a Breakfast Club episode.

For those of a certain age, like mine, this was a hugely impactful film in a lot of ways. Will listen later today
