Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

I went to the cheapo theater and saw Searching for $1.99, about an Asian tech-savvy widower looking for his missing teenage daughter. The gimmick here is showing the plot unfold via endless computer actions, screenshots etc. I didn't cotton much to it. It has either the Harold guy or the Kumar guy, I forget which.

Wow Bohemian Rhapsody got a best picture nomination at the Globes. That will
be hard to beat in terms of bad movies getting best picture noms.

Rented this the other night and found it watchable. I have no idea how it is getting such great reviews unless the critics have just fallen for the tech gimmick. I'd give it about a 6/10.

Mary Poppins Returns nominated for musical/comedy. Are they off the rails or is MPR not awful?

It's the globes, it's not that surprising imo.

Pretty damn weak year of film though, I'd say.

Lol Golden Globes. Still don’t understand why 90~ old, foreign entertainment writers garner so much hoopla.

Hostiles Violent tale of a retiring military man in the 1800s. After having fought Indian tribes throughout his career, he is tasked with escorting a dying Cheyenne Indian chief back to his homeland. Along the way, he encounters a woman who's family was massacred by a Comanche war group.

This was very well done, but relentlessly brutal. However, it wasn't gratuitous violence. It really helped tell the story more effectively.

I'm not a huge Bale fan, but he did a great job.

Would recommend.

Can you guys do me a favor? I want to watch the doc Free Solo but it's not available in my country yet. But it seems it's coming to iTunes and Google play store. I'd love if one of you guys just searched for Free Solo in one of these apps and told me the result with possible release dates. It seems there's a page for them but I get a "not available in your country" message and no release date

Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

From April 28 of this year:

Quote:
Avengers: IW review:

Meh.

For the last few months, my buddy and I have done the usual Marvel nerd thing and tried to take apart trailers to try and guess what would happen. The biggest debate between he and I was how the film would end.

His take was that Thanos would get all 6 stones, kill half the universe and then the n the 2nd movie would be the remaining Avengers finding a away to undo the damage.

I said that he should get 4 or 5 of the stones, kill a few main characters and then the 2nd film is about protecting those and finding a way to kill him. I thought that if he got all 6, and carried out his plan, the 2nd film would have to basically "but nah" the first and basically undercut any emotional impact.

I feel like I was spot on.

When Loki gets got, even though my friend and I agreed he would die to set the "tone" of the film, I still had a "Holy ****!" moment. Ok, ****'s real now. People are going to get got. Then...nothing much happens. Gamora's death was still during the "ok, this is dark" phase of the movie, so that's a positive, but even that was undercut by an out-of-nowhere Redskull cameo.

After Gamora's death, the movie just too a progressively less serious tone. Once Thanos had the Time Stone, two things were obvious:

1) Dr. Strange knew that "losing" was the only way to win and Avengers 4 is 100% going to be called Avengers: Endgame

2) Nothing mattered. Everything was getting undone so there's no reason to get emotionally invested in anyone.

That was brought to a low point with the final sequence. The screenwriters had a chance to save it by killing the old hands. Let Stark and Cap fade away, along with Banner and Widow. Whatever you do, don't "kill off" characters who's goddamn films have already been announced. It completely ruins the emotional connection to the plot and basically guarantees the next movie is just a magical rewind.

Sam Jackson's "Motherf..." was great but the fact that they're tying in Capt. Marvel is pretty silly to me. This was supposed to be the blowoff of the last 10 years and instead we get "Just kidding, we've got a few more characters to solve this for you".

I enjoyed the film for what it was, a fun popcorn movie with a bunch of different colored lasers and explosions. The story was predictable and a victim of character bloat, but the actors in general did a fantastic job. Spiderman's death scene was incredible, I just wish it would've meant something.
Really should've taken TheDarkKnight's bet:

Quote:
Lol. I’ll take action against Avengers: Endgame as the next title. That would get laughed out the building.

The most interesting parts of the movie have to do with the Dragos...the MVPs of this movie is Dolph Lundgren and the actor who plays his son, Florian Munteanu. Young Drago doesn't talk except for a pivotal scene between he and his father. I'm not sure what it says that the villains are the more interesting characters, bu they are.

Solid B
Finally got around to seeing this. Was a little let down by Caple's fighting scenes relative to what Coogler did in the first one. It's fitting that what is a sequel to Rocky IV should have a step back in fight choreography.

Totally agree that the Dragos were the most interesting part of it, but I think that's a positive for the film as a whole. I loved that by the end I was less concerned with what happened to Creed and more concerned with what the outcome of the fight would be for Drago.

Agree with the grade as well. Thought it was fun, and for boxing fans the story was done believable (outside of two smaller guys pretending to be HWs).

One thing that miffed me a bit, but maybe I missed it:

Why is Iron Man floating in space without food and water? Am I not remembering something from the last film?

Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

Widows was excellent, one of the best movies I've seen this year. A colleague got the utterly mistaken impression from the trailer that this is a feminist, girl-power film, but Ocean's 12 this ain't. There's a constant sense of intensity and impending doom, as these women are driven to desperate action due to having guns to their heads.

At the risk of sounding like a tedious hipster, I did get the feeling when watching this that it was directed by someone who really understands his craft. There are so many varied, well-executed scenes. The opening sequence, which juxtaposes scenes of a happy couple with a violent heist gone wrong, was just thrillingly effective.

I knew Tony survived, but I didn't remember him being apart from the others. Now I do remember Spiderkid dying though - I think they were on an alien ship together.

They were on Titan, where they fought Thanos. The Guardians took Thor to get his new axe/hammer and they fought in Wakanda back at Earth. If I remember correctly

The Big Sleep is such a classic. Bogart and Bacall, Chandler and Faulkner. Pure class all the way.

Is this First Man movie worth my 2 bucks? I liked that guy's previous 2 movies, the drummer one and the LA musical, but I also remember Neil Armstrong the astronaut being just about the most boring man evaa. I'm not sure I can sit thru 2 hours of that.

Re: Talk About Movies: Part 4

it has great reviews, but IMO it's good, not great. it's not quite your standard zzz oscar bait like the imitation game, but sadly it's not that far off - the movie never really seems to catch fire. i'm not an enormous la la land fan, but i would still say this is the weakest of the three you listed.

but yes it's worth $2.
