Decent war drama set during the lead up to the 1918 German Spring Offensive in WWI.
Asa Butterfield is great as a green Second Lt, new to the trenches after a mere 8 weeks training, who has to learn to live with the tension, stress and fear of an impending attack.
Led by a childhood friend, a Captain, who is beginning to fall apart under the strain of leadership.
Solid drama that would adapt well to the stage imo.
Well that's not surprising given that it was originally a play. The production I saw several years ago starring David Haig several years ago was very good.

Yea Dolph Lundgren was the MVP of Creed II for sure. The scene where he first encounters Rocky again had a LOT of weight to it, both for the characters themselves and for the meta aspect of the iconic-ness of IV finally coming back (and actually being treated seriously when it's been long thought of as a larger than life joke). There's echoes of Rocky Balboa there, being able to take a seemingly absurd concept (60 year old Rocky coming back and fighting the young champ?!?! bringing Drago back?!?!) and somehow managing to do it well.

My dad used to laugh at 12 year old me for judging the Rocky movies based purely on the final fight (I preferred 2 to 1 at that time I think), and it definitely still factors in. I wasn't happy with a lot of C2 but felt it was redeemed by the end of the fight.
That's because it is a larger-than-life joke.

I love Rocky IV because it's literally nothing but 90 minutes of montages set to various 80s music, especially the synth score by Vince DiCola. Eat your heart out, Eisenstein.

Bodied - the rap battles were pretty good, but the rest of the movie was just straight up garbage.

I couldn’t disagree more. It’s a razor sharp political satire.

I found it almost completely unwatchable. The acting was horrible, the characters were irritating, the dialogue was cringey, and the plot was corny and predictable. It felt like I was watching an R-rated Nickelodeon movie.

But to each his own.

The Wild Pear Tree

Nuri Bilge Ceylan's follow up to Winter Sleep.

This is excellent. A little lighter and less Chekhovian than Winter Sleep but nonetheless a > 3 hour, dialogue-filled Turkish countryside set film where "nothing happens". Not the sort of film that will win the BFLF Academy Award but I'd like to see it get a nomination. Highly recommended (but not for everyone).

Norma Rae You like me, you really like me! Sally Field got a well-deserved oscar for her portrayal of a textile worker helping a union organizer get the union into the mill. I was somewhat surprised at how this has held up. It's a bit dated in style and the scene where she stands up on the table is a little over the top, but still a great portrayal of a flawed person that rises to the occasion.

The Alps Murder Documentary about the killing of a family and a random bicyclist in the French Alps. This was a pretty bad documentary as documentaries go. There were a few weird theories tossed out and some half-ass interviews but not much more. The case (as far as I know) hasn't been solved so there wasn't any resolution. When it ended I just thought "really, that's it?".

Norma Rae is just about perfect for what it does. I always liked that they didn't have her and the Jewish guy falling for each other, just a lot of mutual respect.

Finally went and saw Bohemian Rhapsody and really enjoyed it. But I am a huge sucker for musical biopics and can't think of any that I didn't like. Also a fan of Queens music so I knew it was a can't miss for me although I thought they could have shaved out 20/30 minutes somewhere along the line.

Creed 2 - Solid, enjoyable movie. As others have stated, the Dragos were the best part. I feel like they missed an opportunity for a Drago spinoff. It could have been similar to Cobra Kai, but gritty and dark. It was the most interesting part of the movie and I wanted a lot more.

Widows was pretty solid. Would have made a better 8 part TV series.

Good idea, certainly could still happen.

Apparently Sly's original idea for Rocky V was to be following Drago and Rocky's respective life paths after that fight. It's cool that he finally got to put some of that in.

Spoiler:
Was it implied that Drago was sent to a gulag? I missed that if so (I know he was generally ruined).

That's what they said on the Important Cinema Club podcast (Patron feed) although they may have been exaggerating.

I went to the cheapo theater and saw Searching for $1.99, about an Asian tech-savvy widower looking for his missing teenage daughter. The gimmick here is showing the plot unfold via endless computer actions, screenshots etc. I didn't cotton much to it. It has either the Harold guy or the Kumar guy, I forget which.

Wow Bohemian Rhapsody got a best picture nomination at the Globes. That will
be hard to beat in terms of bad movies getting best picture noms.

Rented this the other night and found it watchable. I have no idea how it is getting such great reviews unless the critics have just fallen for the tech gimmick. I'd give it about a 6/10.

Mary Poppins Returns nominated for musical/comedy. Are they off the rails or is MPR not awful?

It's the globes, it's not that surprising imo.

Pretty damn weak year of film though, I'd say.

Hostiles Violent tale of a retiring military man in the 1800s. After having fought Indian tribes throughout his career, he is tasked with escorting a dying Cheyenne Indian chief back to his homeland. Along the way, he encounters a woman who's family was massacred by a Comanche war group.

This was very well done, but relentlessly brutal. However, it wasn't gratuitous violence. It really helped tell the story more effectively.

I'm not a huge Bale fan, but he did a great job.

Would recommend.

Can you guys do me a favor? I want to watch the doc Free Solo but it's not available in my country yet. But it seems it's coming to iTunes and Google play store. I'd love if one of you guys just searched for Free Solo in one of these apps and told me the result with possible release dates. It seems there's a page for them but I get a "not available in your country" message and no release date
