From the age of 8 until 25, tennis was the most important thing in my life. I played on a collegiate national championship team and I failed at becoming a pro, although I did get to play a few big names like Yannick Noah, Jimmy Arias, Brad Gilbert and Tom Gullickson. I also got to play a few mixed doubles exhibitions with Chris Evert (her brother was my coach as a junior) and helped train Steffi Graf for a couple US Opens.

Probably the only weak link is Shia LaBouf as McEnroe. He has the right manic energy and chip-on-his-shoulder personality, but he comes across as simply a douche, without the McEnroe charm.

The nostalgic factor is huge for someone like me, and seeing Borg's black-rainbow Donnay racket was a real blast from the past, as was the hair styles and Fila and Sergio Tachini tennis wear.

Slow-ponying, but...I don't think McEnroe had any charm until he hit 40ish. And that Donnay Borg Pro...oy vey, Mjolnir isn't as head-heavy.

That said, looking forward to seeing a movie about a sport that isn't stupid...e.g. Vision Quest, Big Wednesday, Blue Crush, Caddyshack

Movie this weekend?

Instant Family or Creed II.

Bohemian Rhapsody - Extremely by-the-numbers musical biopic that does everything you'd expect, and I mostly mean that in a bad way. AIDS is also handled in exactly the way you'd expect and have seen before several dozen times.

After looking up the "historical accuracy" just now, I find it hilarious how much they invented just to make a musical biopic that fits the mold of all the others that came before. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bohemi...rical_accuracy

Until I wrote the last paragraph I'm not sure if I was going to give this a thumb up or down. It's a huge "down" now.

The Mike Myers role is clever though.

I don't mind a bit of inaccuracy, but making the band break up is pretty out there. Don't remember other reviews here mentioning that.

The Lion in Winter is pretty good. I particularly like one speech by Eleanor in which she mentions the year, 1183, and continues:

"Oh, my piglets, we are the origins of war, not history's forces, nor the times, nor justice, nor the lack of it, nor causes, nor religions, nor ideas, nor kinds of government, nor any other thing. We are the killers. We breed wars. We carry it like syphilis inside. Dead bodies rot in field and stream because the living ones are rotten. For the love of God, can't we love one another just a little? That's how peace begins. We have so much to love each other for. We have such possibilities, my children. We could change the world."

Why would you see Creed II if you haven't seen the first one?

I remember that speech. I played the King in a college production. One of only two starring roles I had as an actor lol.

It's kinda shocking now to watch The Lion in Winter and see a young Anthony Hopkins before he hit it big. Btw I could never stand that ****ing Katharine Hepburn, not even in her very best movies. I'm a Bette Davis man!

Probably the one, except for Blade Runner 2049, I want to watch again. Maybe it was the soundtrack

Roma I thought was incredible...in a similar vein to Moonlight, just kinda quietly blows you away.

The film was gorgeous on the big screen, but I came away feeling that Netflix viewing on a TV won't be much different. It's an intimate, quiet film.

Not sure that A Star is Born is gonna beat it for Best Picture, unless there's a Netflix bias.

Instant Family

It’s actually pretty funny and heartwarming. The tone is a bit all over but it’s a solid family comedy.

Grade: B-

Is Psycho a Romantic Comedy?

Someone mentioned reading about Hollywood Romantic Comedies. I want to know if Psycho was included.

That's me. No, Psycho doesn't work although a number of Hitchcock films could be considered romantic comedies. And he did make one actual rom-com, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. It's not bad.

Is this a Day of the Dolphin review? I remember feeling sorry for George C. Scott having to say all those ridiculous lines haha! I think there's an old adage warning actors away from co-starring with animals.
