The Farewell touches on a lot of issues - grief, disappointment, tragedy, identity, and above all family. It does so delicately and without ever being mawkish. Really well acted as well, a great film.

The Lighthouse was amazingly good... but it probably was a remake of some other story made by some other movie maker at some other point in cinematic history... so I guess it really in all actuality, sucks.

I am glad the film wrapped up in the manner it did because it felt like it was looking it in the center of the film... very satisfying watch.

Jojo Rabbit

Has the Beatles and Roy Orbison singing in German, which is fun.

Aims at profundity and misses. Might want to be Sunrise Kingdom or Springtime for Hitler, but isn't. Has "Isn't this cool!" vibe.

I know she is something of a lightning rod, but my respect for Scarlett Johansson grows every time I see her. She's great in this flick. Wait for TV.

^ That first one is the authentic Beatles; they also recorded a German version of "I Want To Hold Your Hand". The second one is not the real thing...

Joker I would agree with all the superlatives tossed around. However, it just didn't grab me. I liked it, but didn't love it. I can't put my finger on why. Maybe it simply rose to my expectations, but did not exceed, which probably means my expectations were too high.

However, the theater itself surpassed my expectations. The last movie I saw there was the new bladerunner. it was old school theater seating and the sound was horrendously loud. They tore out that seating and put in recliners - every other row. Soooo much room and extremely comfortable. The sound was perfect. It was enough for us to want to see a lot more movies at the theater now.

Now that Disney has bought out Fox, they're putting all Fox movies into the "Disney vault" and not allowing them to be screened in theaters

Quote:
But Disney is one thing, Fox is another. Even without older Disney films, inhabitants of major cities, medium-sized suburbs, and college towns could visit a populist, commercial venue such as a multiplex or art-house theater and choose between, say, the new Fast and the Furious or Frozen or a Quentin Tarantino movie, or a weekend midnight show of a Fox title like the original Planet of the Apes or Commando — or, during a holiday period, Fox Searchlight’s 28 Days Later or 20th Century Fox’s Die Hard and Home Alone.

Now, Fox classics are going into the vault as well, for reasons the company won’t publicly explain or justify. And Disney’s vaultification of Fox titles is bad news for movie theaters that depend on repertory screenings to shore up their increasingly shaky bottom lines. The decision to broaden Disney’s artificial scarcity tactic to include thousands of movies released by a onetime rival is a wounding blow to a swath of theatrical venues that used to be able to show them, and where film buffs were able to see them with an audience.

Normal Life (1996 - John McNaughton)

Bonnie & Clyde-ish true story thing with Luke Perry and Ashley Judd. They're both pretty good tbh, but the script never really managed to get me invested in their characters. It does pick up a bit after they turn criminal, but that's after an hour or so. Stylewise looked and felt very like a TV movie except for the nudity (even though McNaughton apparently got into a fight with the studio about them dumping it straight-to-TV instead of a theatrical release).

Talk Radio (1988 - Oliver Stone)

Based on a play by and starring Eric Bogosian (who stars here as well). Almost entirety of it plays out at a radio station, but Stone does enough fancy stuff that it doesn't get dull, and Bogosian is really, really good. The one (huge) false move the movie makes is when it leaves the station - for an extended, visually ugly, and wholly unnecessary flashback sequence that brings things to a complete halt for about 20 minutes. Truly baffling decision. Other than that I absolutely loved this and highly recommend it.

Interesting use of noise (gates, doors, bunkers and rocks). And drying socks. And cake-shops. (Opening a cake shop must be the professional poker of Korea.) Don't know what to make of this movie but loved every second of it. Check it out.

We are all parasites.

I'm just a better parasite than you.

So there, Phat; I don't need to see the silly movie.

Besides, David Hume and Adam Smith already explained it all.

The Lighthouse (2019/new)

Really liked it, although it's not for everyone. Cinematography, acting, balance of drama and dark humor, and consistent sense of irregular atmosphere are all superb. This director is approaching heights where I plan on instantly seeing anything he does.

I suspect that there's a decent correlation with how much one likes The Witch (the director's previous film) and this movie, so, if you didn't like The Witch, you should probably pass.

The Blackout (1997 - Abel Ferrara)

Holy ****. Masterpiece of style and mood. Never really thought of Matthew Modine as a great actor, but he's incredible here. The movie feels really personal and emotionally raw. Also got a crazy-ass Dennis Hopper performance, seeming to improvise all his dialogue, adding to the sorta Lynchian vibe it goes into at times (this would make a good double feature with Lost Highway). Instant all-time favorite. Available on Prime.

Vice Squad (1982 - Gary Sherman)

Cult movie with a wild performance by Wings Hauser, both in his role as the sadistic pimp Ramrod and in his rendition of the movie's theme song "Neon Slime". I liked it, but was a little disappointed. Idk, maybe it should've been either more genuinely 'good' or more fully embraced its sleaziness. It's got nice photography by John Alcott, who also shot Kubrick's Barry Lyndon. Quite a leap from that to this lol.

Last Embrace (1979 - Jonathan Demme)

Suspense movie with Roy Scheider (and Christopher Walken in a small role). The story was a mess unfortunately, but Demme's directing and Tak Fujimoto's cinematography make it well worth a watch.

'bout to re-watch Halloween. What a gloriously cheesy Halloween movie.

Very excited about The Lighthouse, I plan on seeing it tomorrow night.

I liked Lighthouse. I think it's more suited to cinema buffs than movie fans (me) but I was fascinated by how it was put together. The aspect ratio and contrasty film stock emulated the early silent movies. There's a guy in Wales, or maybe England, who shoots movies on old silent cameras that he's converted to modern frame rates. After seeing Lighthouse, I'd love to see some of his stuff.
