I’m quite pissed at myself for waiting so long to see this a few months ago. It’s been high on my list since it came out but I just never got around to it. Was as good as I always heard it was.

Kane made quite an impression on us. For years, a local high school gang called themselves Rosebud. You would see "Rosebud" painted on water towers and overpasses. You got a lot of cred for putting a "Rosebud" in a great place. This was before graffiti was even a concept. Then it was simply considered vandalism.

A friend told me that she and other high school friends put "Qu'est-ce que c'est?" On their shoes. She's younger, but I'm not sure why high school kids would put a lyric from "Psycho Killer" on their shoes. I can only assume they were the nerds.

But Rosebud is definitely cool.

Don’t Worry Darling (2022) was almost great. Art direction and costumes were fantastic, a visual feast. Sound design was excellent.

Spoiler:
Unfortunately, it completely drops the ball in the final act. It’s a film that you really want to like, but utterly falls apart upon any examination of the plot.

I love in Bruges. Have you seen Seven Psychopaths? It is equally as good, I highly recommend it.

For some reason, I thought I had seen Breaking the Waves before, so I decided to watch it again. I hadn't seen it before.

What a brilliant film. The acting by Emily Watson and Katrin Cartlidge (gone far too soon) along with Stellan Skarsgard is moving and beautiful.

There are times when I wished I were religious and believed in miracles, the kind that end Dreyer's Ordet (The Word) and Breaking the Waves.

I think the next course I will develop will be about spiritual films. Students may wonder why an atheist is teaching the course, but I would know.

According to James, quite a few atheists have spiritual experiences. Belief is in no way necessary.

I don't have spiritual experiences. I wouldn't know what a spiritual experience is.

But I support William, Henry, and Bill James, especially the latter.

I concur.

The movie did hold my interest all the way thru, but I definitely had an unsatisfied feeling walking out of the theater.

See How they Run C-

Spoiler:
I saw this one two weekends ago and I had to look up the title of the movie as it is so forgettable. The movie is very boring and superficial. The one good part of the movie is Adrien Brody. How the mystery is solved in the end is particularly stupid. The movie is no Knives Out or CLUE.

I'm envious of the people who get to see this. I have the TCM app on my phone and I am going to try to stream it. I don't believe I've seen it.

Just watched Dario Argento's Inferno. I wish I could do a Phat Mack style review.

Makes no sense. Check.

Nevertheless, Argento's use of color is, as in Suspiria, magnificent--even if the plot makes no sense at all.

Argento can also make something innocuous seem terrifying. See the beginning of the film where a girl walks to a mailbox.

Dario is effective not because he is a great film maker, but because he can actually get into the viewers mind... just like Hannibal Lector can.

I am watching my copy of the newly released 4k UHD of Last Action Hero and I came to an epiphany...

That a considerable amount of this film that is not, action, is actually built around classic literature.

The film is basically a retelling of the Don Quixote story with Danny (the kid) being Sancho Panza.

There are elements of Homer's Odysseus and Hamlet also in there.

Film looks absolutely great on Disc also.

Blonde (2022) Netflix I am a big Marilyn Monroe fan so I was looking forward to this. In her movies Marilyn was larger than life and took over the screen like no other actress ever did. I loved her in her last movie before her death, the underrated Misfits (1962). Ana de Armas does about as good a job of portraying Marilyn as anybody could. She shines throughout the movie despite being given difficult scenes that most actresses would never try. I loved watching her in this. The movie is highly stylized and sensationalistic. The good thing about that sort of approach is that it is never dull. The bad thing is that a lot of these scenes are sensationalistic exaggerations and half-truths about her life. There is too much about abortion and too much about explicit sexual assault. Some scenes are cringeworthy for sure such as the one with the fetal voiceover and the explicit scene with the US President. I can see why the movie has been heavily criticized and I wouldn't blame anybody for hating it. But overall, wow, what a watch.

Just curious, do many posters here agree with this assessment of MM? I guess I've only watched a few of her movies, but I didn't think she "took over the screen" anymore than any other actors do. In what I've seen, her performances matched the films she was in. Honestly I can only remember 3 of them right now. She was great in Some Like It Hot, but that was a great film, and she wasn't the best thing in it (Jack Lemmon and his suitor were). She was ok in The Seven Year Itch, and it was an ok movie. I can't even remember what the other one I've seen her in was, but it was some crappy romantic comedy, and she was crappy in it. Oh, I also saw All About Eve, which was a very good movie, but she had a very small role and I don't even remember her part.
