This is a longtime favorite of mine. I saw it on TV s a kid and was captivated by the B&W photography. Directed by John Huston. I think the ending had a lot of influence on later French Noir-ists. I love anything with Hayden in it.

Last night watched Pina, Wim Wenders film about Pina Bausch, the choreographer. Mesmerizing film and lovely dance sequences, especially those using chairs.
Will look for this.

Got a text from a friend that said “Titane dude.... Titane... Holy ****** ****!!”

So I watched it..... I’m confused....

Same director as Raw which I thought was great!! This wasn’t nearly as good, to me, but I’ve certainly never seen anything like it.

I"m not the best at illustrating my view on a movie but thought this was done really well. Only watched it because I went on sort of a Adam Brody binge after randomly watching "Kid Detective" and then googling him and seeing that he had two other recent movies with decent imdb scores. This one and "ready or not". Some reason I've always sort of enjoyed the comedy in Adam Brody movies so I'd thought I'd give this other one a shot.

Anyway, he is barely in this one so not about him but after watching this movie I googled it and saw that it was sort of based on a real life case of a "promising young man" that was accused of rape.

Thought this movie was really good on multiple levels. For one it sort of flipped the switch on "promising young man" by showing a female character involved through a friend in a similar situation. In real life a man was sort of let off for possibly committing similar acts because of his reputation at the time. I really like though how it didn't victimize the men in this film or even the women. Young people made a mistake and were not held accountable for the mistake according to the law. They weren't bad people. Well, maybe the groom's best friend held low morals but overall you didn't feel like they deserved to spend life in prison for their choice but overall lives were changed in this movie. Also, never once did they mention the word rape in this movie or ever show anything that suggested such an action while the viewer the whole time knew this act had taken place. Just great film-making when you can get your point across without having to word it or show it on screen.

The Trip (Norwegian comedy-horror, not the Winterbottom one) is lots of fun. As can be expected, it's quite silly, but very entertaining. On Netflix.

Free Guy on Disney+

If you like video games (or if you at least understand some of the form, and want to see a fun, mostly family-friendly comedy actioner [apart from one arm breaking moment]), try and watch Free Guy on Disney+. It kind of feels like Deadpool, Lego The Movie and Ready Player One had a baby, and came up with something quite charming.

4/5

Watched The Forgotten Battle on Netflix over the weekend. If you like WW2 movies it's definitely worth the watch.

It's no SPR or Dunkirk but I thoroughly enjoyed it

I was disappointed in The Last Duel. Spoilers for pretty much the entire plot:

Spoiler:
They didn't seem to understand the purpose of telling the story from 3 different perspectives is to show the story from 3 different perspectives. The story should have been, imo: Theo VonDamon is incredibly loyal and a good knight, but something of a brute because of this. Adam Driver is incredibly suave and seduces Damon's wife who is unhappy in her arranged marriage. Wife gets found out and in order to save herself she claims rape. Damon wins duel, once things calm down he realizes that rape was impossible; how would Driver have known to show up on that exact day? He calls her out and goes off on a crusade to get away from his estate. It felt like the editor/writers thought the audience wasn't mature enough to ever excuse adultery even in this extreme (by today's standards) circumstance. Having Driver rape her in his own narrative was especially a waste.

The English are always funny. Funny food, funny roads, funny cars, funny accents, funny fat faces, and funny institutions. London is funny*. Funny beer, funny sports teams, and funny fans that have funny riots.

*Been there done that a number of times.

Dune was VERY VERY LOUD. Villeneuve must have taken lessons from the Christopher Nolan school of sound mixing, because background noise frequently drowns out the dialogue. It's actually even less excusable in Dune though because the dialogue-muffling sound was the blaring Hans Zimmer score.

It's hard to comment on this further until Part Two arrives (if it does). Part One is clearly not a complete film, ending on a, well, non-ending. It is epic though; the scale of nearly every shot is huge.

Dune was spectacular. Villenueve is a genius, if his other films hadn't convinced you of that yet. Maybe the most visionary director alive today.

Yeah, it's loud. Gloriously so. Zimmer's score is perfect.

The only quibble I have is that it might be hard to understand what's going on if you haven't read the book.

You know how you have a book or two from your youth, that has stayed with you, and you can see in your mind certain scenes and what it looked to you as you were reading it? Dune was that book for me...I haven't read it since I was about 14, but Dune the movie looks exactly like I pictured it should be when I first read it.

Timothy Chalamet is absolutely perfectly cast as Paul. He's young, beautiful, and steely-eyed. There's a strength beneath his perfect visage.

I loved every minute.

Saw Dune in IMAX last night. It was an incredible experience. As a non-book reader I probably missed some of the symbolism and stuff. But overall the plot was easy to follow from my point of view.

The visual experience felt like watching Avatar for first time and just being in awe of the setting.

Dune IMAX version. Non book reader, never watched the previous version. Read the first few paragraphs on Wikipedia about the plot. It was pretty easy for me to follow and I didn’t need to read the wiki at all. This was one of the best movie experiences I’ve had. Epic is the word that is tossed around the most and that’s the best way to describe it. The sound added to the movie and helped it come alive. You could feel the scenes in your body. In Tenet, the sound took away from the film and became a distraction. This was nothing like that. My advice would be go see it in IMAX and do so soon. 10/10.

Glad you enjoyed it. I'm not sure whether he has a mental disability or just has no idea what is socially appropriate.

Dune the book. Finished re-read last weekend for maybe the 8th time. The book definitely still holds up.
