Shang-chi and the legend of the ten rings - meh.

I have no idea where the 92% rotten tomatoes is coming from in this bottom third at best MCU entry. 2-3 good action scenes with brutally boring exposition in between. I fell asleep, which isn’t saying much as I fall asleep in a lot of these movies, but my 16 year old son did as well. Skip it.

Tons of great trailers though. Should be a fun few months.

The Dry Australian murder mystery centers on a police detective coming back to his home town to figure out who murdered the family of a childhood friend (childhood friend dead as well). The plot thickens when it is revealed that the two friends were implicated in the death of a girl some 20 years or more earlier.

The movie is somewhat of a mess. Lots of going back and forth in time. Characters sort of appear out of nowhere and when all was finally wrapped up I sort of went, "huh?".

Reservoir Dogs An oldie but a goodie. That scene where all of the guys are getting their color names cracks me up every time.

Godzilla vs. Kong Godzilla AND King Kong! How great is that? Pretty damn great I say. Loved every schmaltzy minute of it. The only thing that could have made it better would be if Mothra showed up. Huge monkey thumbs up.

They threw everything into this movie except extra Humphrey Bogart, but you are right--they forgot Mothra.

I think he's slated for the next one.

Great flick!!!

Life During Wartime on Criterion, film about forgiving and forgetting. I loved it, but it's not for everyone. But what is? Todd Solondz uses the same characters from his earlier Happiness played by different actors.

Stagecoach (1939) Directed by John Ford. Starring Claire Trevor, John Wayne, Andy Devine, John Carradine. A group of people of various status and occupations travel together on a stagecoach and have a very complicated journey. Encountering many adventures that test them and their individual belief systems and prejudices.

This movie is well done. Some clichés but surprisingly insightful especially for the time it was made.

Five bottles of whisky out of five.

Just watched Tower, a documentary about the Texas sniper at UT in 1966. Mostly animated, and very affective. What sort of people are we?

And like Life During Wartime, a film about forgiveness, of others and, much more difficult, oneself.

This. I was skeptical at first because it was animated, but it's really worth seeing.

The Paper Chase A law student draws the toughest of professors for a first year contract law class. Meanwhile (unknown to the professor) he has an affair with the professor's married daughter.

Houseman is definitely the bright spot in this movie. I enjoyed the classroom scenes and the back and forth in the study group but found the romance story pretty meh. Uninspiring performance by Lindsay Wagner. Reminds me of Kristen Stewart.

Worth a watch just for Houseman but don't expect a lot.

It took me a while to buy into the animation but it was good. Hit close to home, too. My dad was on campus that day.

2001: A Space Odyssey - I’ve deliberately avoided finding out too much about this over the years because I’d always intended to see it at some point, so was unprepared for just how mad it is. Hard to imagine a film like this would get a big enough budget to be made today. I’m not sure if it holds up or not.

A Simple Favour - quite a fun thriller/comedy. Not on the level of Knives Out. It could have been better if it had hewed more strongly in one direction or if the jokes had just been less slapstick.

I personally never understand this type of judgement...

I think some viewers might be in need of 'deprogramming' in order to free themselves of some types of bias... such as Modernity bias, westernized bias and 'Marvel Studios' bias.

I'm not convinced he was comparing 2001 to Marvel movies, but I agree there's the possibility of modernity bias. I think of 2001 as contemporary, and I've rewatched it a number of times in the past few years. Does it hold up?
Sure it does. It's one of the greatest films of any kind ever made.

Would it find a huge audience today? I'm not sure it would, but it would still find an audience.

I might suffer from nostalgia bias. I remember being blown away by the special effects of the Blue Danube scene. I still am when I re-watch it.

2001 is certainly way ahead of its time. It's vision of the future comes across as strikingly accurate and scientifically based. It's easy to admire but I found it hard to love because everything is so emotionally distant. Spectacle alone doesn't do it for me.

I watched it around 1990 or so and was completely underwhelmed. I think I fell asleep before it ended. I am sure it was more impressive in a theater, especially when it first came out, but it really had almost no plot for the first two-thirds or so, and I fell asleep before I got to the interesting stuff with HAL I had always read about.

Lamb looks one of the most bizarre movies ever made. Of course it’s an A24 film Speaking of which, I feel like A24 is missing out by not doing a Black Phillip prequel.

Kenneth Lonergan's Margaret is a great film. I found it totally absorbing from the opening to the end, even at a little over three hours. Captures the brainy adolescent as well as any film I've seen, and Anna Paquin delivers a great performance.

The title of the film comes from Gerard Manley Hopkins's poem, "Spring and Fall: To a Young Child."
