Quiet Place II - Not as good as the first one but still quite tense and entertaining. It does feel a bit more corporate-y as it's quite obviously setting up a third film. The son Marcus remains a dumbass.

There were several plot holes with the concept in the first film, and the sequel introduces a major new one:
Spoiler:
At some point during the alien attack, the US government discovered the aliens can't swim. Surely this crucial information could have been widely disseminated? At least send a text to everyone? Could have saved a lot of lives. Also, this must mean that many naval forces are still around. Where are they?!

Saw French Exit with Michelle Pfeiffer. Thought it would be an interesting story about a rich woman going broke, but instead it was really weird and uninteresting. Avoid.

I watched Spring, Summer... last night and damn if that wasn't one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. 2p2 delivers with the more fringe recommendations yet again. Thanks to all who recommended it.

Great movie. What a script by Sam Shepard, and unequaled Southwest U.S. photography by Robby Müller.

4/4 stars
Stars Harry Dean Stanton appearing soon after his monumental performances in Escape From New York and Repo Man. "Stars Harry Dean Stanton" is a phrase we heard not nearly enough.

Hard to compare it to Old Boy. It's much more sophisticated in its plot structure - not saying its better or worse, just that it's more sophisticated.

Peckinpahian in its disdain for senseless and escalating violence. Some of the plot points are unfathomable, but I maintained a general idea of the key elements. Later went to wikipedia for a summary.

A truly magnificent film.

Agree it was entertaining but it was more of the same. They are just hitting the cash button now. My biggest problem was the plot hole you mentioned. I don’t have any interest in watching a 3rd movie. 6/10

Destry Rides Again (1939 ) Western film directed by George Marshall and starring Marlene Dietrich and James Stewart. Great and fun film that is a bit oddball for a western but that just adds to the charm. And Marlene Dietrich is grand and charming and cunning. And James does a bang up job himself.

Five revolvers out of five.

All About Eve (1950) Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz. With Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, Celeste Holm. A seemingly timid but secretly ruthless ingénue insinuates herself into the lives of an aging Broadway star and her circle of theater friends. I stole the previous sentence because it is a perfectly sufficient description.

This is an outstanding film with an very good cast and witty to scintillating dialogue. Superb and seemingly very true to life. It may have even won some silly awards.

Five Oscars out of five.

Nuts in May (1976) Mike Leigh. A self-contained universe, with its own absurd but consistent logic. That's what art is, right? And they visit Lulworth Cove.

Two great films, and see what the boys in the backroom will have.

Wow. Just learned that "George A. Romero’s lost 1973 movie is restored and ready to stream. The Amusement Park (1973) will be on Shudder streaming. His widow says its “George’s most terrifying film…It has Romero’s unique footprint all over it.” “The scholar Tony Williams, who saw the film 30 years ago, wrote, ‘The film is far too powerful for American society…It must remain under lock and key never seeing the light of day,’” Kraus added at the time. “It was never shown publicly. The people who funded it wouldn’t allow it. And no wonder. It’s hellish. In Romero’s long career of criticizing American institutions, never was he so merciless.”

Should be a treat.

And Justice For All Pacino is a lawyer with ethics struggling with the injustices of the legal system.

A pretty decent performance by Pacino. Before he sort of became a parody of himself.

I enjoyed the movie but it seemed a little too comedic for the subject matter. I would like to see this story done a little grittier.

Worth a watch if you've never seen it.

The Fly (1986) I'd seen bits and pieces of this as a kid but had never seen the whole thing until just now. Thought it was quite good overall and maybe an elite horror film, or is it more properly characterized as sci-fi? Either way, it's top notch. It also features one of the dumbest, dubious decisions ever made by a film character. Glad to have finally seen it.

Oh yeah, another thing that I saw some of as a kid and not so much as an adult is Geena Davis. Dayum. I never really found her that attractive (again, mostly saw stuff she was in as a kid) but she is smoking hot in this movie.

Congratulations are in order for Rick Deckard and Rachel, who gave birth today, June 10, 2021, to a baby girl. The first replicant child! Unfortunately, the mother did not survive the delivery, the father had to go into hiding, and the baby was whisked away to an awful child-labor orphanage.

Didn't mean the expectations (Palme D'Or Winner, top ten film of all time per certain reviewers). Ending was weird/bad.

Good decision. But I think it's one long movie in three parts. Perhaps that's a trilogy.

Watched The Class last night on Criterion. French film based on a book by a French teacher who plays himself in the film. Fascinating film that almost has a documentary feel. The actors playing the kids in the class are great. You might recognize your own schooling in this film.

I think I only have ever seen Hard Eight and the Gambler (James Caan) off that list... I am surprised the Cincinnati kid is not on that list.

Seeing this tonight at the Angelika. Can’t wait.

Just saw Riders of Justice, grade A for me. Action, intelligent dialogue, even some about probabilities which we poker players are well acquainted, quirky fun characters (Emmenthaler steals the show), and a twist.
