As the forum's only Ben Affleck fan, I feel it's my duty to report he's making a movie of The Big Goodbye:

A Cry in the Dark The dingo's got my baby!

Although I had heard about this case, I didn't really know much about it. The movie presents this from the point of view that it was blatantly obvious she was innocent and the whole trial was a sham. I did a little reading up afterwards and it seems the case against her was indeed pretty shady.

A couple of things I really liked about this movie. First was Streep's performance. Making this woman both unlikeable and a victim at the same time was masterful. The other thing I really liked was the cutaways to people arguing about the whole thing. Kind of reminds me of the OJ trial. Why do we care so much?

Given all that, I'm not sure if this would be everyone's cup of tea. I really enjoyed it though.

Burning This is a Korean adaptation of a Japanese short story adapted from an American short story. It's a drama about a guy who randomly meets a girl from his hometown in Soeul one day, they hit it off, she goes to Africa and he agrees to watch her apartment. When she comes back, she is with a guy, which...complicates things. The only notable in the all Korean cast is Steven Yeun, most famous as Glenn from The Walking Dead. This movie features themes of class and gender roles in society, which makes it a bit similar to Parasite. It's a slow burn, at 2:30 long, but is well worth it. I love when you find gems like this on Netflix.

Like Parasite there is an element of social class conflict in Burning . Ben, the mysterious upper class charmer, suddenly makes a head-scratching statement something like "I like to burn down greenhouses". He means isolated greenhouses in rural areas that no one cares about any longer. This is one of a few subtle clues to the viewer and to a perplexed Lee Jung-so that something horrifying might be going on behind the scenes. It is never made explicit, so a lot of viewers are left wondering. I liked it a lot.

Burning was outstanding

About burning:

Spoiler:
One way to interpret the film is that Ben is a serial killer or sex trafficker of these women that he meets. But I think the film works better if he's just an aloof upper class trust fund baby and Hae-mi ran off on her own after getting called a whore by Jong su and dumped by Ben. Then Jong Su decided to become Travis Bickle and enact justice and "save" the women, which is just an excuse for the frustration and rage he feels at losing Hae-mi and being stuck with a broken family and no economic prospects.

Anyone have any other recommendations for little known great films on Netflix?

With the aforementioned 2 movies of The Hater and Joy, Rising High, a little a la Wolf of Wallstreet.

The Invitation If you're going to do a thriller with a twist, don't make it so blindingly obvious. A man receives an invitation for a reunion party with all his old friends he hasn't seen in a while and the host is his ex-wife who spent time in Mexico. Most of the movie is awkward and kind of boring dialogue between people and it feels like there is something that has happened or will happen that all the characters know about but we, as the audience don't. And there kind of is, but it's not very relevant to the twist. The twist is choreographed so obviously that you think that it's a big misdirection, but it's not. So once you get through all the vague dialogue with mostly unlikeable people, you get a paint by the numbers resolution.

Burning was a slow burn (no pun intended) that had a good payoff. The Invitation fizzled out. When you google "Best movies on Netflix" sometimes you get a gem like Burning and sometimes a flop like The Invitation. I'll have to check out the ones that Dubnjoy recommended.

Because it's Iannucci the movie is mostly focused on the finding the humour in all of the situations. It's an interesting and much more enjoyable take on Dickens but it kind of feels like a bunch of loosely tied-together vignettes. I enjoyed it and it has some very funny moments but it's average as a whole. 6/10
It felt like a two-hour adaptation of source material that normally is produced as a mini-series. There were so many stories that felt rushed. Vignettes, as you say. It would have been better either spun out longer, or shorter with some characters such as Dora written out.

The cast was incredible - particularly Patel who was mediocre in Lion. The young Patel, as in Lion, was amazing.

Man, I loved I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives In the House, and I'm still wanting to see Blackcoat....

Oz Perkins is the son of Anthony Perkins, of Psycho fame.

I don't think it's that bad. It's a cheesy 70s variety show. But I guess for the fans who have turned Star Wars into basically a religion, the fact that it's not serious and not "canon" makes it offensive to them.

Chicago 8 movie was exactly what you'd expect coming from Sorkin, for both better and worse. It held my interest, possibly because I remember these people and events. And Cohen is especially good as Abbie Hoffman. Redmayne is good too. Rylance's Kunstler seemed an awful lot like his Thomas Cromwell to me. Kunstler I remember being a big bear of a man with a big personality to match. Like a lefto-legal Bukowski.
