I got a giant election right about now.
When Chani walked into the frame I couldn't help but well up tears...

I've never seen the original Dune, is it worth seeing? For laughs at least?

It's a bit of a mess, but definitely worth seeing.

so would

no country for old men
there will be blood
zodiac

all be ineligible to win an oscar based on the inclusion rules?

lol Hollywood is so woke its turning fascist

and of course anyone who doesn't think art should be judged based on these standards is racist.

Those rules are such a token gesture and will have zero impact on anything.

Quote:
STANDARD B: CREATIVE LEADERSHIP AND PROJECT TEAM
To achieve Standard B, the film must meet ONE of the criteria below:

B1. Creative leadership and department heads

At least two of the following creative leadership positions and department heads—Casting Director, Cinematographer, Composer, Costume Designer, Director, Editor, Hairstylist, Makeup Artist, Producer, Production Designer, Set Decorator, Sound, VFX Supervisor, Writer—are from the following underrepresented groups:
• Women
• Racial or ethnic group
• LGBTQ+
• People with cognitive or physical disabilities, or who are deaf or hard of hearing
All a studio would need to do to meet criteria B is select women to be the head of makeup and head of hairstyling.

Quote:
To achieve Standard C, the film must meet BOTH criteria below:

C1. Paid apprenticeship and internship opportunities

The film’s distribution or financing company has paid apprenticeships or internships that are from the following underrepresented groups and satisfy the criteria below:
• Women
• Racial or ethnic group
• LGBTQ+
• People with cognitive or physical disabilities, or who are deaf or hard of hearing

C2. Training opportunities and skills development (crew)

The film’s production, distribution and/or financing company offers training and/or work opportunities for below-the-line skill development to people from the following underrepresented groups:
• Women
• Racial or ethnic group
• LGBTQ+
• People with cognitive or physical disabilities, or who are deaf or hard of hearing

For C1 it only requires the distribution or finance company to have an intern in each department from an underrepresented group and C2 requires them to offer training/ work opportunities for below-the-line skills which again includes hair and make up. So if they have a couple women being trained to do hair and make up they satisfy the C2 criteria.

Also how easy is it for an old white guy to get diagnosed as "hard of hearing"? because that seems like a giant loophole for all of these criteria.

There are several articles pointing out that the new rules would have made little to no difference to previous Oscar winners.

Every time I watch Blazing Saddles or The Producers or Young Frankenstein I expect to be disappointed because I am WAY too sophisticated and worldly to fall for that schtick anymore, and, of course, I am always wrong. Holds up imo

Just a beautiful movie. Might have helped I was in the right kind of mood for such a pleasant surprise. I also tend to like nature stuff a lot, so your mileage may vary.

Last night, flipping through the grid, and on three consecutive channels were:

Groundhog Day
Hoosiers
Slap Shot

Also M*A*S*H came on TCM a bit later.

Occasionally Dish Network does something right (I assume by mistake).

Forgot all about watching Chiefs/Texans.

Another new release, finally on Bluray... Caro Diario (Dear Diary) 1993

This is a beautiful semi-autobiographical light comedy that follows (the Director) Nanni Moretti as he crosses parts of the Italian countryside making entries into his personal diary.

I find these types of films that live between the margins of traditional movie making, quite rewarding and very enjoyable.

Moretti won the Palme d'Or for best director for 1993

Unfortunately TIFF doesn't feel the same this year. I think I saw the only TIFF film I'll see this year tonight at a drive-in screening.

Bruised is Halle Berry's directorial debut where she also stars as a MMA fighter trying to get her career and life back on track after an embarrassing loss. There's 2/3rds of a good movie here but everything after the mandatory beginning of the 3rd act training montage is a mess. 4/10.

I thought the first Rocky, with its meat-locker/raw-egg scenes might have escaped the cliche, but I can't think of another movie that has.

It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood came on the other night. It had already started, but I caught the remainder.

What a nice movie.

At the very end, they're filming a Mister Rodgers episode. Tom Hanks walks off the set and sits down at the piano. In the background is a monitor on a rolling cart.

What I thought I saw on the monitor was the real Mr. Rodgers, showing the scene they'd just gotten done filming in the movie. I thought that was a nice tribute (if I saw it right).
