Given that not only was the Ron Chernow biography the main inspiration for the musical, but Ron Chernow himself was the technical advisor to Lin-Manuel Miranda in the development of the musical, I think that your fears are unfounded.

He did not believe in democracy. He thought most people were little more than common swine and not capable of governing themselves. He was an adamant proponent of regressive tax policies, marching soldiers against the common workers among his own countrymen, so he could force them at the point of a bayonet to service the interest payments on his speculative investments. He proposed a monarchy and senators for life at the Constitutional Convention (and he wanted all of these people to be selected by rich, intelligent men like himself). He was the biggest supporter of Wall St. banks at the expense of everyone else, but one could not accuse him of making inequality worse, because he would not consider that to be an accusation. He would have gladly admitted that he believed most of the population merely existed to enrich greater men like himself.

Everything Alexander Hamilton stood for was rejected by the U.S. public over 200 years ago. Everything we know as the good old U.S.A. was the product of Jeffersonian Democracy, Thomas Jefferson being Alexander Hamilton's arch-rival.

So I find Hamilton the musical, the movie, whichever, kinda disgusting to be honest, it's a story in which everything except for fanfiction parts about this horrible and scandalous man were left out.

Besides the fact that it's kinda whatever artistically, to make a story about that man and then dress it up with hip hop and minority actors and sell it as the great play of wokeism ... at $500 a ticket no less ... I find it all rather off-putting.
This man gets it!

It's so sad to me when people have this mindset. Myself, I love facts.

What have you read, Chernow?

I agree. Shakespeare is overrated. Besides, we should read books from other languages.

Why not do a hip-hop all minority play about Lincoln? Or what about major black historical people? Barack Obama? MLK or Malcom X? Booker Washington or Spike Lee or Quentin Tarantino?
It was written by, staged and stars nearly all non-white people. Perhaps that should tell you something.

For movies, Adventures in the Screen Trade by famous screenwriter William Goldman is great if you haven't read. Especially loved the All the President's Men chapter. There's a sequel that I'm excited to read at some point.

If you'll do TV subject, I loved the two Late Shift books (Letterman/Leno and Conan/Leno).

For the same type of narrative non-fiction but not entertainment, there's Hackers (computer industry up through 1984, does include Sierra the game company) and Liar's Poker (80's Wall Street).

Important Cinema Club podcast on film books; I actually don't know if I've read any of them yet. They mention Biskind. They're written out in the post if you don't wanna listen: https://filmtrap.com/icc-62-best-fil...-according-us/

Dark Waters (Todd Haynes, 2019)

Really good movie.

China Girl (Abel Ferrara, 1987)

Ferrara’s spin on Romeo & Juliet. Formally a treat, but a little dull.

I didn’t realize reading was a zero sum game.

Last night on TCM:
  • Harvey
  • Bringing Up Baby
  • A Night at the Opera

That was a pretty good night.

I wish I still got TCM. Some of my favorite movies there.

I've never seen Harvey. I have seen rabbits before; even wild ones dancing about the roadways.

Harvey is a favorite of mine. In fact, I keep a copy of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility next to my cologne collection as a tribute to Harvey.

Finally saw Uncut Gems.

Early on, was wondering what the hype was about - but, the increasingly manic, wild spin feel ends up driving both engagement and the narrative.

Sandler's never been better. Every cast member's performance feels authentic. &, nobody plays Kevin Garnett better than Kevin Garnett.

Just watched The Hunt which I found to be extremely entertaining and action packed. Basically a different version of the Deadliest Prey. But in the end its the age old story of the wrestler versus the boxer.

Uncut too uncontrolled for me.
The Hunt is on my watchlist. Sounds entertaining.

Well I just watched a "generational" movie which featured acting by either the son or the grandsons of each of these super stars:
Alan Alda
Richard Attenborough
Clint Eastwood
Mel Gibson and
Mick Jagger!
Good movie. Eastwood's son shined. Let you guys figure out the name.

The Old Guard is a helluva concept with a boring execution. If it was a pilot for a TV show, it'd be a great start, but as a stand-alone movie - it's too much set-up and not enough engaging story.

I thought The Hunt was pretty terrible tbh. And Gilpin kept doing this thing where it looked like she was having a stroke. I dunno what the deal with that was, but it was weird.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood - The most reassuring actor in Hollywood (Tom Hanks) plays the most reassuring person ever (Mr Rogers). The focus is more on the semi-real, cynical journalist who interviews Mr Rogers and is bowled over by his kindness. Heartwarming without being treacly sentimental.

Can certainly understand & respect that response; but, it was the lack of control - the chaos generated by & surrounding Ratner - that pulled me in like an eddy dragging me down into a degenerative world.

Richard Jewell was very strong all around. Rockwell is skyrocketing up my underrated list. Same with the lead. I was 12 when the bombing happened and remember it vividly because my cousins had just moved to ATL. Wild story. I was shocked this only had 75% on RT. Much closer to the 96% audience score.
