The Age of Innocence (Martin Scorsese, 1993)

Beautifully done and well-acted, but also kinda boring. Think that's probably on me tho, and that I might see it differently on a rewatch a few years down the line.

...A Valparaiso (Joris Ivens, 1963)

Good short film about a port city in Chile. Some striking images. Narration written by Chris Marker.

The Load (Ognjen Glavonic, 2018)

Quote:
Vlada works as a truck driver during the NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999. Tasked with transporting a mysterious load from Kosovo to Belgrade, he drives through unfamiliar territory, trying to make his way in a country scarred by the war
Nicely photographed and interesting movie. Tempting to compare it to Sorcerer (or Wages of Fear ofc but I haven't seen that yet) but it's really not much like that. The first two thirds were still quietly suspenseful tho. Very minimalistic and everything happening in the subtext. I liked it a lot.

The Greasy Strangler (Jim Hosking, 2016)

Bizarre gross-out comedy gunning hard for cult status which it will probably achieve. Not really my cup of tea but fairly well-done and some memorable scenes. Got the "hootie tootie disco cutie" chant stuck in my brain since I watched it.

Does anyone have any experience with the Shudder streaming service? Looks like it's owned by theater chain AMC. I think I'm gonna free week trial it just to rewatch an old favorite of mine, David Cronenberg's Existenz (eXistenZ). And then maybe forget to cancel lol like I always seem to do with free trials. It's pretty cheap, like 3 or 4 bucks a month.

Just finished watching a new documentary that was just released today on Netflix: Athlete A. It's the story of the decades-long, rampant sexual abuse of young gymnasts on the USA national team by the team doctor, as well as the overall physical and emotional abuse meted out by their coaches. In addition to interviews with some of the gymnasts, it also tells the "Spotlight-style" story of how the Indianapolis Star investigated and reported both the story of the sexual abuse, as well as the subsequent coverup by USA Gymnastics (USAG) itself. As with Spotlight, the investigation starts out small and then uncovers more and more as the reporters delve deeper and deeper into the workings of USAG, and more and more girls and women come forward with their complaints.

Definitely a worthwhile watch.

At the time that Inception came out and many were hailing it as one of the GOAT, I was fond of saying that there were a large number of movies about dreams and/or VR that had done the same types of things as Inception, but better and earlier. eXistenZ was one of them. I think my take has aged well.

Spoiler:
Aren't we still in the game?

All us olds and our inability to remember to cancel are the entire reason these “free trials” exist lol

The Shout (Jerzy Skolimowski, 1978)

Wow. Absolutely loved this movie. Almost comically bizarre yet still terrifying. Haven't really seen anything like it. Brilliant visuals and editing, and amazing sound - watch it with good sound system or headphones. And of course, since watching movies high have been discussed on this page, this one is perfect for that. Alan Bates, John Hurt and Susannah York star, with Bates especially shining. A new personal favorite.

Empty Metal (Adam Khalil, Bayley Sweitzer, 2018)

Quote:
Empty Metal takes place in a world similar to ours—one of mass surveillance, pervasive policing, and increasing individual apathy. The lives of several people, each inhabiting extreme poles of American social and political consciousness, weave together as each attempts to achieve some kind of forward motion, sometimes in contradiction, and always under the eye of far more controlling powers.
This was also a nice discovery. For sure feels eerily prescient when you look at what's going on in the US right now. Crisply shot in the narrative feature parts, it also mixes in documentary footage, faux documentary footage, CGI reenactments of murders committed by cops, and drone footage. It's a low-budget debut with non-professional actors and it's definitely not perfect, but I found it a pretty ballsy, refreshing and memorable movie.

Wasp Network (Olivier Assayas, 2019)

I sorta get why this has gotten a lukewarm reception - it's possible that the material would've been better served by a miniseries or much longer movie, and it's more mainstream than his other work - but I still really enjoyed it. Entertaining and interesting story, with an amazing cast of top latin actors. Plus it's set in Florida so it's sunny and beautiful to look at.

RP's Knife in the Water is utterly fantastic... just what the doctor ordered.

Dom... Cinema Paradiso is getting a brand new 4k UHD/scan release.

I know you love this film.

Also... Sony JUST released Lawrence of Arabia in 4k UHD that is supposed to be spectacular, but one needs to buy it in a box set with 6 other films.

Hey Sony... EF U, I only want two of those seven

I'm halfway thru Parasite and honestly not seeing what all the fuss is about. I guess I should finish it before arriving at an opinion though, can't take that responsibility lightly.

You really seem to be giving one of the most widely acclaimed films in a decade your full attention.

Hey guys I watched Apocalypse Now in 10 minute chunks over three days between episodes of Two and Half Men. I don’t really see what all the fuss is about.
