The Shout (Jerzy Skolimowski, 1978)
Wow. Absolutely loved this movie. Almost comically bizarre yet still terrifying. Haven't really seen anything like it. Brilliant visuals and editing, and amazing sound - watch it with good sound system or headphones. And of course, since watching movies high have been discussed on this page, this one is perfect for that. Alan Bates, John Hurt and Susannah York star, with Bates especially shining. A new personal favorite.
Empty Metal (Adam Khalil, Bayley Sweitzer, 2018)
Quote:
Empty Metal takes place in a world similar to ours—one of mass surveillance, pervasive policing, and increasing individual apathy. The lives of several people, each inhabiting extreme poles of American social and political consciousness, weave together as each attempts to achieve some kind of forward motion, sometimes in contradiction, and always under the eye of far more controlling powers.
This was also a nice discovery. For sure feels eerily prescient when you look at what's going on in the US right now. Crisply shot in the narrative feature parts, it also mixes in documentary footage, faux documentary footage, CGI reenactments of murders committed by cops, and drone footage. It's a low-budget debut with non-professional actors and it's definitely not perfect, but I found it a pretty ballsy, refreshing and memorable movie.
Wasp Network (Olivier Assayas, 2019)
I sorta get why this has gotten a lukewarm reception - it's possible that the material would've been better served by a miniseries or much longer movie, and it's more mainstream than his other work - but I still really enjoyed it. Entertaining and interesting story, with an amazing cast of top latin actors. Plus it's set in Florida so it's sunny and beautiful to look at.
