Watched two music docs:

L7 - Pretend We're Dead

Great history of the seminal 90s hard rock band, narrated by all 4 of the members, with amazing archival footage of the good and the controversial. These chicks were badass. Still are, too...I saw them on their reunion tour a couple years ago.

The Beastie Boys Story

This is a filmed version of Adam Horowitz (Ad Roc) and Mike Diamond's (Mike D) stage show that they toured the country with in support of their incredible book about The Beastie Boys. They talk to the audience while clips play on a big screen behind them. It's funny, informative, and very sweet, as a lot of it is a remembrance of their bandmate, Adam Yauch (MCA), who died of cancer over a decade ago. Watch through the credits on this one!

Just to settle a dispute long debated in this thread, 2017's best film, The Greatest Showman, re-opened in Korea last weekend and took top spot.

Blake Lively does a good solo acting job in the Shallows where the only plot is her trying to avoid a shark in the ocean for 80 minutes. She's 5'10". I needed to find out because she made Anna Kendrick (5' 2") look like a midget in A Simple Favor which was very entertaining with its witty dialogue exchanges and wild characters and crazy plot twists and sex scenes. Like a lot of good movies, its best to ignore the plot holes in that one though. Blake is married to Deadpool's Ryan Reynolds and has had three babies with him.

Cul-de-sac movie night started for the summer Friday. They wanted to watch The Usual Suspects, so we did.

Always fun to see the reaction of a new watcher to the reveal in that.

I've decided that we're going to have connections between movies this summer, so next time is Casablanca. Each time, in addition to the movie, we'll have a puzzle to solve: why is this movie connected to the previous?

Sometimes it will be pretty obvious, as above. Sometimes the connection might only be in my head, or very thin: "both comedies".

Not sure where I'm going after Casablanca. I've got a few ideas for the direction I want to take this, but nothing really interesting jumps out at me.

Yep, great one.

Also saw Crip Camp mentioned above. Very interesting documentary about the disability revolution. The woman who led much of the activism was really quite amazing I thought.

Damn you’re right. Not quite as good a movie in my opinion, altho Renner crushes it. I think I’ve made my feelings about the abysmal Rebecca Hall clear here.

Their Rotten Tomatoes are almost identical and both star Afflecks, so I’ll give myself a pass.

Got around to seeing The Nice Guys with Ryan Gosling and Russel Crowe.

One is muscle and ones an alcoholic PI and they are investigating the disappearance of a porn star, along with several deaths related to the film she was shooting at the time of her disappearance.

Its written by Shane Black, who's a guy I wonder how he got to be a so called good screenwriter.

This was funny in spots but the story was weak, and never had a conclusion, unless the point of the story is to have a few murders and nothing happens to the people who had them murdered.

Waste of time.

We Own the Night is on Netflix and I enjoyed it. Toned down Joaquin is still a great actor. Eva Mendes is nice looking. It’s nothing special, but it’s a good throwback to late 90s / early 00s action dramas.

Molly's Game Based on a book by a competitive skier that morphed into running high stakes underground poker games.

I'm guessing there is a pretty wide gap between the actual story (at least the details) and what was shown on the screen. I probably shouldn't judge movies on things like that, but it really jumped out at me on this one. Great cast and solid performances. I don't care too much for the running lead character narration, though.

Not great but worth watching.

Nice Guys got a lot of good reviews, but I agree that it was not nearly as good as billed.

I regretted watching Molly’s Game. Maybe it’s just being a poker player, but I thought the dialogue was trying too hard. I’ve said that before about Sorkin tho. If anybody every talked to me like Molly to her boss after he lost that huge pot, it would be hard not to slap them.

Toby Maguire character was kinda boring and the folding the nuts scene was obviously lazy and unnecessary. At least Stringer didn’t let me down tho.

Michael Cera playing Maguire was so flat I actually thought he was supposed to be Jungleman for a little before I got my facts straight ha

The original 1960 The Housemaid will be on TCM Sunday night/Monday morning at 3:15AM CDT. I've never seen this available on TCM or any TV before. Googling, I see it's available on Criterion. If you've never seen it, check it out. Truly weird and erotic and maybe the best Korean film of all time.

It's a masterpiece in anybody's book.

Watched The Vast of Night, new indie sci-fi on Amazon Prime. It was alright. Had some charm. Was presented like a 90 minute Twilight Zone episode and played exactly like that. Don't really have much more to say than that.

I watched this last night. Wouldn't recommend. Nothing really happened. I like the 50s vibe but there wasn't really much of a story at all.

The Gift - I had never even heard of it, no idea how it slipped through the cracks as I love psych thrillers. Thought it was 11/10, & fun to see Bateman take on a different type of character. Had me on edge the whole time. Best movie I've seen in a minute.

Us - Decently entertaining. I don't really know what to think of either this or Get Out, they both seem somewhat performance-arty and while I don't quite understand the praise that Peele gets, his movies are fun to watch.

Uncut Gems/Good Times - Both are great, I think I liked Gems more just because all the acting was A+. Boy oh boy am I glad I always stayed away from the pits/sportsbetting. Also, Julia Fox's ass is in a class by itself.

Shehezerade - French movie about a French-Algerian (I think?") kid's life in Marseilles, simple movie that's very well done.

Train to Busan - best Korean zombie movie set on a train I've ever seen, super entertaining

I also watched ALL of the James Bond movies while they were on Amazon Prime, but I'm not going to bore anyone with my reviews lol

Needless to say I'm taking full advantage of the q'tine
