Even for a big dumb action movie this was terrible. Not really any coherent through line, character arcs or anything. Just big dumb poorly done explosion set pieces one right after another.

I just rewatched the Playboy party scene and she looks more like Joey. I don't think that's who she is supposed to be, just who she looks like. Of course if I were Steve ****ing McQueen, it would be Joey Heatherton.

QT is one of the best and most consistent directors and yet people manage to underrate his work because they don't like him as a person.

Yeah, QT set the bar so high pretty much everything since will underwhelm...

That said, OUATIH was great. I don't think I've ever enjoyed a Pitt performance more, and DiCaprio was especially good - his performance during the moments where he is in TV actor mode who is struggling to raise his game is subtle and sublime.

Didn't particularly see the ending coming as I was just enjoying the ride, but it was a very satisfying pay-off. Probably his funniest film aside from Pulp Fiction.

I don't know how Tarantino rates as a movie director but as a movie fan he is magnificent. His movies are fan fiction and I always look forward to them. People may use "fan fiction" as a dismissive term--to me it's high accolade. Fan fiction can range from the ridiculous to the sublime, but when it is sublime it manages to distill the essence of what it celebrates, and sometimes even elevates it beyond the original.

Is Tarantino another Howard Hawks or Wong Kar-Wai? No, but he's not trying to be.

Taste is subjective, but there's little that makes discussing any type of art worse than golden calves.

Funny, I had the same thing. Probably a cognitive illusion, but possibly it was a different balustrade as the geometry didn't quite work.

I was watching a video about VFX and they pointed out something really cool about the movie. During that scene where Miles and alt-Peter Parker were fleeing the lab, swinging through trees, Miles was animated at a lower frames-per-second than Peter in order to make his action look more choppy, reflecting how new his abilities were to him. Later in the film, when he came into his own, his frame rate was increased.

Had movie night out in the cul-de-sac Saturday night. Introduced the older (HS freshman, juniors and early 20s) kids to Reservoir Dogs.

Big hit, of course.

I'm working on moms & dads to o.k. me to do a Casino/Goodfellas double feature before summer ends, but I think we're going to go comedy next.
