I'll do anything to see a movie with Zhang Ziyi or a Hammarlund HQ-100 in it. Godzilla appears to have both.

If I'm Vegas on the 31st, I may shuttle over to the Smile Factory for Godzilla and some jammin' limit o8 with my elders.

I can't wait.

Just watched Sarah Polley's Stories We Tell, and it's brilliant. I had seen her Take This Waltz a few years ago and hated it. Stories We Tell takes its place among the best documentaries I've seen.

They lifted the review constraints on those that were fortunate to see Godzilla past week... there is not one bad review. To the contrary, to the reviewer, has been glowing fun and awe.

Fingers crossed.

Vengeance (1970) (Hong Kong/Shaw Bros.)

Roaring 20's, somewhere in China: Everybody smokes.

Wife Fu; Sign Board Fu; I've-got-a-hatchet-in-my-stomach-but-I'm-still-kicking-ass Fu; Heel Taps Fu.

Lee Marvin: Played by David Chiang -- This guy is a coldblooded bad ass.

You killed: My brother.

Sister-in-law Fu; Dagger Fu.

Men's Room Beat-up Scene: Filmed in 1970, is this one of the first?

Hanging-from-the-rafters Fu; A-Night-at-the-Opera Fu.

Humphrey Bogart: Played by David Chiang.

Interlude: Mushy Stuff.

Elevator Fu; Meerschaum Fu; Coffee table Fu; Throw-him-off-the-9th-floor Fu; Broom-handle-Mauser Fu.

Interlude: More mushy stuff.

And: She's a good cook.

Spoiler:
Cross - Double Cross - Triple Cross.
Possum Fu.
A Point-Blank-style "Sniper gets the wrong guy" scene.

The first 60 or 70 minutes was as good a Noir film as you get. I'd never seen a Kung Fu Noir movie this old. (Not much kung fu -- mainly knife fights.)

The last 20 minutes was a letdown - mainly because the romance I thought would turn poisonous turned treacly. But still a good watch. The audience reacted to everything in the exact opposite way that I did, which is always a good sign. Check it out.

John Wick 3 was pretty incredible. The fights are amazingly choreographed, with lots of long takes. It's not all in the editing.

John Wick 3 was just fantastic. Hats off to them for taking a simple formula and knocking it out of the park every damn time.

Aren't there long takes in all three of them? I haven't seen 3 yet, but I remember thinking that the first two had extended takes. I read somewhere that production costs are so high in Hollywood that they don't have the rehearsal budget of a, say, Hong Kong film.

Nice to hear the JW movie is shot with some assemblage of Newtonian physics maintained... it DOES make a difference.

Jw is lightning in a bottle. First one at first I thought was stupid and on re-watch and watching I decided to shut my brain and enjoy the ride and it's really good.
Glad to hear the third is good

JW3 was really dumb but kinda fun I guess. It’s exactly what it looks like, and not a thing more.

David Ehrlich always has a pretty neat way of presenting his top 25:

By the way, Malick's new film is getting good reviews. For some reason, I missed that he did Song to Song in 2017. Didn't much care for his two before that although they were pretty to look at.

Profile of David Milch still writing/creating new Deadwood in declining health. Perhaps he’s better thought of as a TV writer/producer IDK but great insight as to his creative process.
