woohoo, starting watching my charter criterion channel movies. Great for watching foreign, artsy, intellectual films which I admire. Treated myself to Ordet(1955, Danish, Dreyer) and Mirror(1975, Russian, Tarkovsky) . Wonderful but now I need some less mindful video to take a rest. Game of Thrones should do it!

Tucker and Date vs. Evil Silly stupid "horror" movie about silly stupid college kids and silly stupid hillbillies. I gotta admit I found myself laughing out loud at the silly stupidness. If you are in the mood for mindless nonsense, I'd recommend.

The Dawn Wall To guys try to climb the "Dawn Wall" face of El Capitan for the first time. The actual climbing doesn't evoke the same "oh my god" response as Free Solo, but it is an impressive feat nonetheless. The back story is just crazy, though. I won't reveal, but it's scarier than climbing a cliff imo.

Love both of those artsy films. But there's always a need for some foolishness, too.

Ok movie people. Save my sanity.

The horror at Notre Dame today has me thinking of one of my favourite pieces of history. Hitler ordered Notre Dame destroyed at the end of WWII but it was found full of explosives but not destroyed because General von Choltitz defied Hitler and refused to do it because it was so beautiful.

This story is told in a movie. What one? I can’t remember and it’s driving me nuts!

The movie is not about this. It’s an off hand story told in the movie.

I thought the trailer ruined the movie for me. This movie suffer from DC terrible reputation and a director that cannot balance out that reputation forcing some heavy marketing where the trailer is a 9/10 and the movie may be a 7/10 but seeing both transformed the experience into a 5/10 for me and good luck avoiding the trailer that was everywhere for one year non stop.
Studios need to grow some balls and hype their movies in a more creative way. Some movies are hopeless money losers and need heavy artillery, Shazam wasn't.
Kudos to Levi who will have a new career after the marvelous miss maisel and Shazam making people forget the mediocre "chuck".
Don't have any qualms with your opinion on Shazam- I thought it was good/enjoyable, but understand it's not for everyone- but Chuck was a phenomenal T.V show and, even if it wasn't for you, Levi was objectively amazing as the lead. What Chuck did so well was throw a bunch of different tones at you, at any point it could be any of funny/sweet/emotional/action-packed. To successfully pull that off your leads have to be able to make the shifts in tone seem seamless and believable, and Levi did that amazingly. Combine that with the amazing chemistry he had with Yvonne Strahovski and Adam Baldwin/Josh Gomez and I don't see why anyone would want to forget his performance on that show, even if you weren't a big fan of the show itself.

Thanks but that’s not it. I’ve never seen that. The movie I am thinking of is not about the event. It’s modern times and someone just tells it.

Diplomacy is great. Definitely worth checking out if you think that story is at all interesting.

I'm always impressed by movies which can hold my attention with only a few actors.

Hang 'em High came on last night. Notice the label on the whiskey bottle at 0:14

Is that the same label as they used in Unforgiven? (about 1:53 and 2:12)

If so, I'm curious if it has any meaning, Clint being the star of both. Or is it just a movie prop coincidence, westerns always use the same looking whiskey bottles?

Anyone with knowledge in that area?

I don't have any real idea what I'm talking about but I'd wager a bunch of $ that it's not a coincidence.

Caught The Best of Enemies on discount day.

Checks off the social justice buttons in a low-intensity melodramatic approach. The film chooses understatement to make its points - exemplified by Rockwell's performance.

Feels slightly formulaic during its 130+ minute run time. PG-13 with racially charged dialogue. Can easily be broken up into chunks when streaming. Tells a slice of specific history story that will be new to many viewers.

It was worth the $5.50 admission; regular night pricing, not so much.

My spouse loved it. I liked it.

Last couple days watched Sean Baker's Tangerine in class. Again, really didn't know how students would react, but they loved it. One said, "I didn't want it to end."

Tonight got home and watched Jonathan Demme's Rachel Getting Married. Hadn't heard much about this one, but how can you go wrong with Robyn Hitchcock as a wedding singer? I found the film moving and strange, but it works. Debra Winger is fabulous by the way.

Two great movies. I love the actress who plays Rachel. Can’t remember her name.

She was good. She looked like she could have been Debra Winger's daughter.

I posted this a few months ago for a 2 + 2 fellow to suggest some solid to excellent obscure sci-fi movies :

Ok, will throw some good to excellent obscure sci-fi movies that have flown underneath the radar :

Mr Nobody : My favourite on this list. So underrated and amazing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXf3gVYXlHg

Moon : Great narrative. Will not say more.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWoDBcSW4_c

Nothing : Directed by Vincenzo Natali (a Canadian) who brought us Cube, this is an amazing minimalist setting of 2 guys that have power to vanish anything of their disdain. Since they are misanthropic af, you can imagine what ensues Amazing comedy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwQ9qAv_TCQ

Splice : Natali again about the dangers of cloning cross-species.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pIeSYhipUs

- Frequencies : solid movie. All the elements were in place to make it a GOAT movie, but it fell just short. Still very good though.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQHc-WkT77s

- Coherence : Off a minimal budget of 50k, this movie is fracking good. It has a minimalist setting of a dinner gathering of friends that suddenly enter different worlds/different alternative selves. Solid af

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxAOewNzz-8

- Sunshine : I included this one as since you have not seen The Fountain (in my top 10 of all time), so perhaps you missed this one as well... Loved it, elite af, Danny Boyle is legit GOAT

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcNu3AML1L0

Another Earth : More of a sentimental drama than sci-fi, really. This film introduces a parallel alternate world which serves as a means for the protagonist to come to terms with her morning. Decent.

About Time : Okayish time travel rom com. Worth a watch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7A810duHvw

Never Let Me Go : It took me a second viewing to really enjoy this movie (the ending is great, me thinks). A solid portrait of accepting death and this bottom world.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXiRZhDEo8A

Predestination : Great, great travel movie. Enuff said

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcQacCfi_pw

Gattaca : Speaking of Ethan Hawke, if you have not seen Gattaca, it is an amazing underrated 90s movie

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_KruQhfvW4

The Time Machine : I enjoyed the romantic/impossible quest of it all. Am also a suckah for sci-fi/time travelling movies

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90T7iLuzFgg

Time Lapse : Intriguing crime suspense about time travelling and its subtle implications.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YhP-VfH81E

The One I Love : Time travelling and alternate worlds, what can go wrong, right

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCOvhojlZzQ

Naked Lunch : I mean, Cronenberg's classic weird movie about a junkie's schizophrenic's realm (based on William Burrough's book). I will not list off other Cronenberg's or Lynch's movies (you probably have seen them and this is a complete-utter wall of text already )

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koCZ-o50EHY

ARQ : An engaging time travel action movie.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JY0DGLrd9GY

Under the Skin : Scarlet Johansson in a strange and (somewhat) feminist inclined movie. Very solid.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcR5KHjoc-0&t=56s

Always Shine : Less of a sci-fi, I guess, but definitely has surreal/otherworldly elements and a must for feminists.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wp4blJoV9h4

Over the Black Rainbow : I have yet to get to this one, but will very soon

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWF0bBKhe6o

Notable mentions : La Jetee, Primer, Upstream Color Abre Los Ojos (or Vanilla Sky), Brazil, I Origins, The Man From Earth, Cypher

My all time favourites (known sci-fy movies) : 2001, The Fountain, Sunshine, Annihilation, Her, 12 Monkeys, Mr Nobody, Arrival.
