Free Solo was one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. The last 30 minutes was something I can’t put into words. I was just in awe. Best movie of the year and nothing is really close

Went to go see Robert Rodgriguez's Alita Battle Angel. and I liked it for the most part but if I hadn't seen it in IMAX/3D I probably wouldn't have cared for it. The special effects are top notch and the movie's action sequences are fantastic. Rodriguez sure does know how to construct menacing looking bad guys and the "bad" robots in Alita are pretty badass. The dialogue and some of the elements of the movie are extremely corny as if they were written in the 90s "extreme" era of marketing which made me roll my eyes a lot...For a turn off your brain, visually stunning action movie Alita does its job even though it falls short of being great/very good via how corny it is at times.

Agree 100%. The dialogue was awful, there were way too many info dumps and the plot progressed just like youd expect a manga adapted as a movie to play out.

I was still entertained though. Great action scenes and special effects. Also despite complaining about the info dumps and lack of plot, I somehow found myself appreciating the world building that went into this movie.

One thing which desperately needed to be changed imo:
Spoiler:
The main character never seemed to be in danger except for 1 scene. She kicks everyone's ass then manages to get two huge upgrades before she fights the guy who shes already defeated 5 times before. For what is supposed to be a climactic battle, the build up to it indicated that she would just steamroll him, which she did..

ya I was thinking exact same thing you were about his relationship (he's also 100% on the spectrum fwiw) but I read an interview he gave which put the relationship stuff into a much better perspective.

when they were filming the movie the relationship was just a few weeks old so of course he's not anywhere close to prioritizing her over climbing but now they've been together 2+ years and he says she has a much bigger say in what he does and he would have to take her into much bigger consideration before trying something insane now that they are in a more serious relationship.

he is really just so honest and thoughtful when he speaks it's quite refreshing.

Will Smith recently released this short, funny, three-minute video wherein he talks about why he declined the role of Neo in The Matrix.

I Think We're Alone Now. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6169694/

A man spends his days in isolation, cleaning his home town after a deadly plague wipes out nearly all of humanity. Content in his isolation, his world is suddenly shaken by the arrival of a young girl who holds a dark secret.
I love these kinds of slow burning, post apocalyptic dramas and this one did not disappoint.
Great performance from Peter Dinklage.

interesting analysis by an amateur youtuber Roy Andersson's inspiration. guessing i'll have to rewatch the living trilogy.

for most of us history is just something that happens in the background

Whose brain did this?

Didn't he turn down Django too? Must be so many stories like that.

The Grey Zone 2001 Amazon Prime
8/10

Extremely raw and dark. It's about the Jews who are forced to work in the crematoria at Auschwitz. Thought the dialogue was very sharp. Keitel, David Arquette, Buscemi and some other familiar actors. Directed by Buster Scruggs (Tim Blake Nelson)

No mentions yet of The Lego Movie 2?

When the first one came out I was skeptical, despite being a massive Lego fan when I was growing up. I skipped it in theaters, but I watched it on an airplane with MrsWookie, and we loved the hell out of it: fun characters, rapid fire referential humor, clever animation with everything in bricks, a whole-hearted embrace of everything it means to be Lego, and then a universe-shattering twist that completely changes your whole understanding of the movie for the better.

A sequel here couldn't possibly live up to the surprise and delight of the first one, because you already have that understanding of the universe, but this was absolutely a fitting sequel. This movie hits you with its biggest and most fun twist right out of the gate (not one that was spoiled in any trailer I saw), but it still saves some nice ones for the end. The movie consistently operates on multiple levels, much like the first: the main plot line, the knowledge of Legos qua Legos, the knowledge of American popular culture including meta-humor about movie tropes, and of course one other level that I won't give away for people unfamiliar with the series. Many jokes tend to hit on two or more of these at once, which I found impressive. About the only joke that fell flat for me was:

Spoiler:
Maya Rudolph stepping on Legos. I laughed the first time, but the joke didn't need repeating. That was really stupid and poorly done.

Don't see this movie if you haven't seen the first. See the original first for sure. If you are somehow a soulless grownup who hates the first one, I guess don't see this one either. But if you loved the first, you'll definitely love this one.

Has anyone here seen the 4 hour version of David Lynch's Dune? It's on BBC channel right now... it's quite a bit different than the theatrical release.

BBC channel... it's still on.
6:30 thru 10:30.
It's quite a bit different... not like missing scenes (though there is that), it's like the movie is completely re constructed. Some complete scenes are using different footage and editing.
Very interesting.

I'm watching it...are you sure it's not just long for commercials? It doesn't seem any different from what I've seen...

from wiki:

The rough cut of Dune without post-production effects ran over four hours long but Lynch's intended cut of the film (as reflected in the seventh and final draft of the script) was almost three hours long. Universal and the film's financiers expected a standard, two-hour cut of the film. Dino De Laurentiis, his daughter Raffaella and Lynch excised numerous scenes, filmed new scenes that simplified or concentrated plot elements and added voice-over narrations, plus a new introduction by Virginia Madsen. Contrary to rumor, Lynch made no other version besides the theatrical cut. A TV version was aired in 1988 in two parts totalling 186 minutes including a "What happened last night" recap and second credit roll. Lynch disavowed this version and had his name removed from the credits, Alan Smithee being credited instead. This version (without recap and second credit roll) has occasionally been released on DVD as Dune: Extended Edition. Several longer versions have been spliced together.[13] Although Universal has approached Lynch for a possible director's cut, Lynch has declined every offer and prefers not to discuss Dune in interviews.

You don’t need me to tell you, but Spotlight is quality from top to bottom. Man the acting is good. If its been #10 on your list for a while, watch it, even if you’re not that interested in the Catholic sex scandals. 9.5/10

Sorry to Bother You is probably the weirdest movie Ive ever seen that I’d still call good. It goes completely off the rails in the third act, but I thought it was original and refreshing. My gf wanted off the ride tho. I think as a stand-alone story this movie works and the relevant social commentary takes it to the next level (more about class than race). Still trying to figure it all out and what it amounts to, but I recommend it. If you didn’t know, the main rapper in The Coup (Boots Riley) directed it and that’s pretty cool. 8.5/10

Yes Dom, if you could rewind to the beginning you would see the reconstruction. It's most prevalent for the first hour.
For example, there is no princess narration at the beginning of the film... it's a male voice and illustration drawings. The space navigator scene is completely different and dialog is changed.

it's the extended version of Dune...I have seen this before...177 minutes long

Dune

Theatrical cut: ~129-137min (137 on 2006 DVD)
TV cut: ~176-186min
Extended Edition DVD cut: 177 min (2006 DVD) (cleaned up version of the TV cut)

Quote:
The presentation on this edition is a drastic improvement from the original letterboxed release. On the flipside of the DVD is the alternate 2-hour 57-minute version cut for television. As many fans know, this 'extended' version was disowned by Lynch, who insisted his name be replaced by that famous Hollywood pseudonym "Alan Smithee;" the name used by directors whose film was taken away and recut against their wishes. There is some new material in the 14 minutes of deleted scenes offering a bit more background into the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, the Kwisatz Haderach prophecy and the Fremen culture and their struggle.
Introduction to Eye by Frank Herbert

Quote:
Filming Dune did something else. I have David to thank for teaching me to write screenplays. During that education, I was able to influence some decisions about the film, but I was unable to influence the ending or how much would be cut for the theater. From the approximately five hours of film in the original footage, only about two-fifths emerged from the cutting room.

What was cut?

Here's a partial list for the aficionados:

The confrontation between Stilgar (Everett McGill) and Duke Leto (Jurgen Prochnow) where Stilgar spits on the table -- the gift of his water.

Development of the relationship between Shadout Mapes (Linda Hunt) and Jessica (Francesca Annis).

Most of the love story between Paul Muad'Dib (Kyle MacLachlan) and Chani (Sean Young).

The fight where Paul kills a Fremen and cries (giving water to the dead).

Development of Kynes (Max Von Sydow) as the Imperial Planetologist and (most vital) the place of melange in a space-faring society.

The relationship between Paul and his mentors: Duncan Idaho (Richard Jordan); Thufir Hawat (Freddie Jones); Gurney Halleck (Patrick Stewart), and Dr. Yueh (Dean Stockwell).

The death of Thufir Hawat.

The relationship between Paul and the Fremen widow, Harah (Molly Wryn).

Scenes with Jessica and The Reverend Mother Mohiam (Sian Phillips) that would have made the Bene Gesserit sisterhood more understandable.

That's only a partial list.
Quote:
David Lynch (January 13, 2006) : "Dune, I didn't have final cut on. It's the only film I've made where I didn't have. I didn't technically have final cut on The Elephant Man (1980), but Mel Brooks gave it to me, and on Dune the film, I started selling out, even in the script phase, knowing I didn't have final cut, and I sold out, so it was a slow dying-the-death, and a terrible, terrible experience. I don't know how it happened, I trusted that it would work out, but it was very naive and, the wrong move. In those days, the maximum length they figured I could have is two hours and seventeen minutes, and that's what the film is, so they wouldn't lose a screening a day, so once again, it's money talking, and not for the film at all, and so it was like compacted, and it hurt it, it hurt it. There is no other version. There's more stuff, but even that is putrefied."

Here is an extensive shot-by-shot comparison between the theatrical & extended editions.
