Tonight I watched High Fidelity again today. I might have students consider how music is used in Rom-Coms for one assignment, so that goes on the supplemental list of recommended films.
Both amazing films.

Groundhog Day for the first time in a while. It's great, but its sexual politics are horrendous. It's all the weird "stalking and telling a woman you love her on the first date is romantic" stuff.

Moves the plot along well; there were a few times where I thought "okay, now there will be an unnecessary scene (of him going to bed or whatever) to bridge to the next plot point", but it would just cut right to it.

Here's what I've kinda decided upon.

Films will include: Bringing Up Baby (Howard Hawks, 1938), The Lady Eve (Preston Sturges, 1941 or The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek (Preston Sturges, 1943), Pillow Talk (Michael Gordon, 1959), Annie Hall (Woody Allen, 1977), When Harry Met Sally (Rob Reiner, 1989), Tangerine (Sean Baker, 2015), Let The Sunshine In (Claire Denis, 2017), The Big Sick (Michael Showalter, 2017.)

Films may include: Lars and the Real Girl (Craig Gillespie, 2007), High Fidelity (Stephen Frears, 2000), Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist (Peter Sollett, 2008), Sleepless in Seattle (Nora Ephron, 1993), My Best Friend’s Wedding (P.J. Horgan, 1997), You’ve Got Mail (Nora Ephron, 1998), The Shop Around The Corner (Ernst Lubitsch, 1940), Obvious Child (Gillian Robespierre, 2014), 500 Days of Summer (Marc Webb, 2009), An Affair to Remember (Leo McCarey, 1957) Punch-Drunk Love (P.T. Anderson, 2002), Moonstruck (Norman Jewison, 1987), The 39 Steps (Alfred Hitchcock, 1939)

great list! But why Pillow Talk? It's just not very good

Obvious Child is perfect for this class...

I thought "Down With Love" (2003) was a great spoof of those Doris Day + Rock Hudson comedies.

Pillow Talk fits in historically as a post-Playboy, post-Kinsey, sex comedy.

I like it much more than Pillow Talk.

Age of Innocence Period piece about a high society lawyer who is marrying/married to one woman but loves another.

High on style but somewhat low on plot. I really enjoyed watching it, but the story has been told a million times and usually much better.

Roma I'm still digesting this so my take here might not be how I view it later. The cinematography is fabulous. So many great shots.

The movie goes at a pretty slow pace. I kept thinking that a bunch of stuff is about to happen. I mean, a bunch of stuff did happen but in the end it seemed like the story was just sort of a snapshot in time of a family. But, this isn't a negative at all. It was a fabulous snapshot in time of a family.

The birth scene was incredible. How many hollywood movies would ever go there?

The more I think about this movie, the more I like it.

My "but why" would be great list, but why both The Shop Around The Corner and You've Got Mail. The latter is just an updated take on the former with basically the same underlying story.

The second group will be for comparison. I'm thinking of possible paper topics for students. I remember one critic writing about Tom Hanks back in his Perfect Strangers days that he would be Hollywood's next Jimmy Stewart, so there's that, too.

Hanks and Scoalri were in Bosom Buddies, not Perfect Strangers

And they were both brilliant, as was Holland Taylor as their boss. One of my favorite 80s sit-coms

What a "meh" Oscar list. Only thing that's interesting is the Pole getting a Best Director nom and "Border" getting a make-up nom.

Surprised to see Crazy Rich Asians get shut out...

I bet $100 on Crazy Rich Asians not getting a nom, so I’m pretty happy about the snub. I really liked it though. More than Bohemian Rhapsody for sure.

I feel like this may be the year they just give it to a blockbuster like Black Panther. Why not? Pretty lackluster competition.

I enjoyed Green Book for what it was. I'd compare it to a movie like Shawshank Redemption - overall pretty pedestrian and unoriginal, probably not what normally passes for "Oscar" material... but the vast majority of viewers, regardless of demographics, will probably still enjoy it. Nothing wrong with that.

Bonus: it basically introduced the world to Jack Black. The ending was pretty awesome, since most people didn't know who he was at the time.

More suprised than Star is Born not getting a best picture nod? I thought it would have been a shoe-in due to subject material alone
